Does anyone know if Cleveland offers curb side recycling with regualr trash pick up?
  2. Major -- one thing you probably need to take into consideration is the condo fees. When we looked at some places compared to others Battery Park won out because of the condo fees being less and access to the beach.
  3. Major -- sorry I didn't see your message. BP is sort of like the Rockport Square development in Lakewood, just with longer tax abatement and some single family houses as opposed to all attached condos. Lakewood/Rockport Square also does not have the beach at Edgewater Park but you can easily get to Lakwood park or Edgewater via bicycle. I don't know anything about Cleveland Heights except that it isn't easy to get to but it is close to the Clinic as would Shaker Square be very easy to get there. In my opinion I would break it down this way -- Downtown in the Warehouse District or Flats (eventually) is a lot of nightlife. So if that is the atmospher you want, that is where you will find it. Tremont and Ohio City are urban and lots of good eating and walkable neighborhood. Battery Park/Detroit Shoreway is up and coming and I personally think it will be GREAT in about 5 years. Lakewood is good mixed young professionals, lots of diversity, and a lot of older homes with good value that have been well maintained. Hight taxes thought. Cleveland Hts./Shaker Heights is what I would consider to be very artistic and educationally based communities as well as health care. From there, Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, Severance Hall, museums, Case Western Universty, and Cleveland State are all pretty close as well as the Theater District. If I worked at the Clinic or any of those places I mentioned I would DEFINITELY make taking public transportation to work a number one course of action and go from there. Best of luck to you!
  4. Okay, we were just there on Saturday. We are ready to sign. I think we want to buy on the side over by the vacant Pat Catan's building, the street that has the tunnel that is not renovated yet. We did speak to someone who was outside (was that you???). Someone from IT at Progressive??? And if so, how is the ride to Mayfield Hts. (assuming you work there). Partner works in Mayfield Hts. and was concerned about the ride. Anyway, we are getting excited about it now! 8-)

I agree on the number of empty buildings! every time we drive through some of the flats along the bridges we always see the buildings that would make great loft condos. there is one building in particular that has been empty for years! If I only could win the lottery!
  7. Well, now that we are narrowing it down based on openness and being progressive -- I would not say Willoughby, Mentor, Euclid, Chardon are the places to go to either. I guess just like any real estate decision there are trade offs. If you want the lake at the cost of openness, try Euclid. I live there and I think you have good access to the lake but definitely concerns about segregation. Mentor, Eastlake, and Mentor On the Lake are closer to where your husband will work but they are all pretty much the burbs. Chardon -- nice downtown, but sprawl and not close to the lake. Willoughby would be okay, nice downtown, and the lake is close to drive to but not walk to. I think Cleveland Heights has pluses & minuses -- the biggest minus IMO is the accessibility to the freeway. The daily commute for your husband to work will be a nightmare. Then he would have to come home and shovel snow!
  8. We recycle -- Euclid, OH just started curb side recycling again. they take a lot -- cans, bottles, plastic, newspaper, and cardboard (even cereal boxes) we eat a lot of organic stuff, fresh organic produce, meats without hormones, and organic packaged goods if available organic/natural grooming products probably should start using more organic cleaning products wish we could take public transportation but little available that would meet our needs Question -- does Cleveland have curbside recycling? Did anyone hear that the production of soy products now is actually doing a lot to destroy old growth forests and rainforests since the land is being taken over for soy farming?
  9. You might also want to look at Battery Park in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. yo
  10. We live in Euclid and are actually considering moving to the west side of town in order to even out our commute between the two of us and because we like the west side better than the east. Most of our friends live on the west side. Euclid isn't bad but it is a place going through transition. The southern area of the city is going through some rough times but the northern part along the lake -- known in the town as "North of the Boulevard (Lake Shore Boulevard)" is pretty good. The downtown area of Euclid has some restaurants but not too much in shops but there is a fair size grocery store, lake access, a few decent restaurants, a park along the lake, and good access to public transportation. Concord is about 20 minutes away and you are going against traffic at rush hours. You didn't mention where you would be working, but if you are working downtown, Euclid would be a good split the difference point on commute (same reason we are looking west!) Best of luck!
  11. I've never been to that one, but I have been to the top of the Vernon Manor hotel. They have a rooftop deck with a bar/party room. Great view. I live in Cleveland but travel to Cinci and stay at the hotel a lot.

I have a family member who works for an exclusive housekeeping company on Pittsbugh that caters to an upper income clientele cleaning their homes. All they use is vinegar and other natural cleaners to clean with. If there is a stubborn issue such as a stain they need to oontact a manager who needs to contact the home owner for permission to use a chemical type product. I asked her about it, she says the vinegar actually cleans very well. Just as an aside, they also never make the beds. Seems the dust mites just dry up and die when exposed to air and light all day instead of trapped between the sheets all day.
  13. Didn't know where else to post this --- considering a move to Cleveland/OC/Detroit Shoreway. Does the city have a recycling program? Is it a curbside program or are there drop off points? Thanks!
  14. Part of me says different thread then part of me says all this talk of supporting regionalism is good so the thread should stay as is. Then another part of me says to the first part of me -- "what did you say?" :drunk:

For us it isn't so much about making money that we are considering a move to an abated property. It is the thought that without adding taxes to the monthly mortgage payment we can probably take that mone and pay down the principal. That would allow us to reach our financial goals sooner rather than later.

you know, I was just wondering, are there too many new units on the market that aren't being sold and this is a way to speed up the sales on units on "grandfathered" projects? They can always vote to restore the abatement if supply starts to run short. We have been looking at lots of places to potentially purchase. I can tell you that it doesn't seem like the places are moving quickly and on top of that there are older, previously abated properties coming on the market with only 2 to 5 years left on the abatement. Competition to make a sale is fierce. I'm not saying I agree, but could this be part of the issue and the decision to slow the growth? I tihnk failed new development attempts are worse than development that never makes it off of the drawing board.

Thanks! One of us works in Brunswick and the other in Mayfield Heights. Does Cleveland offer reciprocity?

Don't stop learning, don't stop taking on a challenge, don't stop looking for opportunity to try something new or just do a little extra in your chosen field, and be willing to take calculated risks. The career changes will come whether by careful design and planning along the way or simply by finding what you thrive on as a person and then earning money at it!

  20. Does anyone have any updates to this project? Thanks!

I suppose that best articulates why I think high accident -- just the feel of coming off of the freeway to the roundabout -- speed to slow, people are still just thinking "go". I think roundabouts in general are fine and probably not more prone to accidents.
  22. jmjr replied to a post in a topic in Completed Projects
I agree, I foresee a lot of accidents as well. I do have to say, I kind of like the big radio tower looking "Steelyard Commons" signs along the highway. Just unique, that's all.
  23. I vote for trees! BTW, if I recall the Carolinas use some trees too. And, might I ask, are the walls along I-90 heading into downtown from the east some of the first experimental "concrete dog-shit" variety as previously quoted? Partner and I travel a lot -- no matter where we go EVERY single frickin' wall that we see ANYWHERE else is nicer than the one we look at daily!!! I find myself actually hoping for some graffiti on the damn thing so that at least there will be some color and variety! :wink2:
  24. I was doing a search for Battery Park. Found a link to a forum on hear. Never looked back!
  25. So am I to understand that some ramps will now not be built? Which ramps would those be? Which streets?
