  1. Lost track of this. Are the games still happening ?
  2. So here is a thought -- outlet mall in Tower Cty. With the casino going in not everyone wants to spend 24/7 gambling. Why not another attraction for when the bus tours roll in? I thought of this when I visited PA recently. Meadows Race Track near Pittsburgh has slots and horse racing. Next door? You guessed it - outlet mall, Tanger Outlets. Gambling and shopping. Sounds like a good marriage to me.
  3. I think Constantinos should move into the old city owned church. Put in a full wine selection, patio, bakery, sell some organic type foods, some quality prepared food for taking home, and there you have it - pedestrian, transit, and auto traffic have a good quick stop place.
  4. Hahah thanks for reminding me, I just added it. Glad to hear about a bakery! Farkas Pastry Shop is in that area too. Fantastic old world pastry.
  5. Most of these things exist on or immediately adjacent to West 25th, actually. There's a pretty good bookstore (Horizontal Books), there's a coffee place right by Market Square that isn't too expensive, you can get bakery in the West Side Market (not every day, granted), food - again, West Side Market, Dave's if you prefer a supermarket (I'll grant you this Dave's is a bit pricey), there's a Yoga place above Dragonfly, Elegansia is a clothing store (next to where Moda was/Mitchell's will be), and there was a pop-up clothing store across the street recently. Also, there's a bike shop, a little electronics store (anyone know the deal with that place?), and something will be going in the empty but now renovated storefront across from the projects/next to Lutheran. We do lack a good sit-down pizza place, and the neighborhood isn't terribly kid friendly, although it's not really hostile either. St. Ignatius students use Ohio City Burrito as an afterschool hangout, they seem like the best customers. They're always there when I stop in. There's a library walking distance, but it's pretty overwhelmed by unsupervised kids. They need other places to go. I totally share concern for the long-term fortunes of the neighborhood and I've commented several times that I'd like to see more affordable rental apartments, redevelopment of public housing, and I'm sure many people here would still like to see the RTA Red Line station on the 'better' side of Lorain, but things are pretty good. It's still okay to criticize. But we can enjoy what we've got, too! I agree on the pizza place. Sit down until 10 or 11 then a sidewalk window open until 3 AM to catch the after bar crowd. If I had the $$$ I would do it myself!
  6. I know I am late to this discussion - bu a few years ago we looked at purchasing this and renovating it to be our home. Great open space and built like the proverbial brick sheet houze.
  7. Thanks. I wish them luck although I don't know about another bar type place in the area. I would like to se a good Italian restaurant with a great bakery (think cannoli Corbo's style) in the area.
  8. Anyone know what is happening with the La Boca space in Detroit Shoreway?
  9. Where do you these great old photos? I would love to find some of Battery Park from when it was the working battery factory.
  10. I saw the plumber parked into vacant single family on W 76. Perhaps starting finish work?
  11. Welcome! We see your place being built. Looks good!

I thought that Walmart had some sort of exclusive around being the only food store allowed in SYC? My guess is a Kohls or Dicks.
  13. Yes, there are a lot of us who care in BP! You bought - townhouse or single family - either way welcome tote neighborhood!
  14. We have been to Indian Delight on Detroit several times. Great food. Never very crowded but I see a lot of take out. I hope the place stays open!
  15. It is great but I think it is only open through mid-January. It went in where Room Service moved out of.
  16. Sorry, closed.
  17. Southwest is (has) taken over the old Northwest counters. Could this be a sign of things to come?
  18. I think it is multifaceted. On the weekends there are plenty of people from the suburbs who flock to the West Side Market. Why? Because it is a destination that people want to go to. I also notice though that the panhandlers (and street performers for that matter) don't seem to be as prevalent. There is typically one person selling a newspaper to support the homeless. So, what needs to occur at PS is to make it a destination that people want to go to, including the suburbanites, AND control what happens with panhandlers so that people do feel safe and want to support downtown.
  19. Street performances have been since ancient times. I fail to see how anyone could be bothered by them (especially those playing violins or trumpets). There's no comparison between a street performer and a beggar. Do you think MorrisonDance adds to the urban environment? By the way, no, you don't need a permit to be a street performer. "In the United States under Constitutional Law and most European common law, the protection of artistic free speech extends to busking. In the USA and most places, the designated places for free speech behavior are the public parks, streets, sidewalks, thoroughfares and town squares or plazas. Under certain circumstances even private property may be open to buskers, particularly if it is open to the general public and busking does not interfere with its function and management allows it or other forms of free speech behaviors or has a history of doing so." I think it's a shame that street performers get lumped in with agressive panhandlers nowadays. Thanks for the clarity on the permit. I'm not lumping them in with panhandlers. What I am saying is that people can find them not so charming and perhaps just as annoying as panhandlers. The reality is that the city itself does not have a large enough population to support businesses in the city. If we want those businesses to survive we need to bring people down town. To do that we need to recognize that if people are afraid to come in to town then we cannot turn a blind eye to their perceptions and figure out how best to deal with that. Not saying they should go away, just that we need to be realistic.
  20. Please, please, please, don't confuse street performance with panhandling. One adds to the urban environment, one takes away from it. Street performance???? Doesn't that need a permit? I think whether it adds to an urban environment is a matter of opinion. Not saying that I don't appreciate it nor am I commenting on it as an art form. Just saying not everyone sees it as an enhancement to an urban environment.
  21. Not saying the sky is falling but hate to see retail leave. Four tax preparation places and a tattoo shop don't make for great business. Nothing against any of those places, just want to see the area continue to move forward. I have heard it said that it is difficult for the area to support BOTH Gordon Square and the Antiques District on Lorain. Too bad some of those shops can't move to the DS area. The area already has arts. Add to that antiques and the restaurants and I think the place can become more of a distination. Destination = $$$. Dollars equate to being able to do more. Just a thought.

Been there. I think there is one flight in and one out per day. It is a big spot for people who like to dive. Lots of shipwrecks to explore off of the coast, apparently .
  23. We nearly bought a place at the Park Building downtown. However, after parking at TT twice and walking through there and Public Square twice on our way to visit the Park we were completely turned off. I cannot say that was the only reason we did not purchase there but it certainly was part of the decision. I was actually looking forward to being able to take the Red Line to the airport when I travel but not so much walking the gauntlet. Until something is done about the loitering and the behavior TT and Public Square will just be same old same old and nothing near what it can be. Do any of the designs for this space relocate the "transportation hub" away from the front doors?
  24. Hoping the area is not loosing momentum. I do think the number of restaurants in the area is becoming saturated. Retail? Not so much. I am sorry that RS is moving. I have seen a building on the north side of Detroit in GS all boarded up. Wasn't sure if that is something going in there (hoping that it was in fact expanded RS). Perhaps it is something else and not just a response to some vandalism? Anyone know?
