Cleveland: Immigration News & Discussion
Redirected from the Slavic Village development thread... Well that was fraught with lazy stereotypes. Yes, many Ukrainians are in Parma. My wife is Ukrainian and a refugee case manager. Ukrainians are being placed wherever agencies can find affordable, safe housing. Most start out living with family or friends in Parma, Brecksville, Seven Hills, Beachwood, Mayfield Heights, South Euclid, etc. But using stipends from their relocation agencies, they have to move into the most affordable and secure housing. So many are living in apartments in Cleveland (Cudell, West Park, Jefferson and, yes, Slavic Village). Not all Cleveland Municipal schools are bad. Check the ratings. And many charter schools are good. I live in Lakewood but my son goes to a charter school -- in Cleveland.

I thought it looked like a modern interpretation of an old train station.

And that historic apartment building in the background is a real beaut. Looks like it's in good condition, too.

Cleveland: Downtown: Standard Building
I haven't heard anything about Magellan in a long time. But I think something is happening there. I belatedly added info to the article about Karl's Inn of the Barristers being forced to close by landlord Weston. I specifically asked Barron about whether the Weston-owned lot was included in the sale in any way, including whether there is an agreement for Standard residents to continue the Weston-owned lot at the NW corner of West 3rd and St. Clair. There isn't. You don't reserve parking spaces in a parking lot if the parking lot isn't going to be there much longer. BTW, The Standard has been available for sale privately since January -- right when Karl's was evicted.

Cleveland: Downtown: Standard Building
Cross-posted in the downtown residences thread... The Standard hits the market By Ken Prendergast / May 12, 2023 Not all high-rise office and other commercial buildings in downtown Cleveland convert well to residential uses. And then there’s the historic Standard Building, 99 W. St. Clair Ave., which seemed a natural to become home to hundreds of people in the heart of the city. And now the timing is right for the company which bought and redeveloped The Standard to offer it for sale. https://neo-trans.blog/2023/05/12/the-standard-hits-the-market/

BRT is planned on Broadway. Check the article's last paragraph and the story it links to.

Cleveland: Slavic Village: Development and News
They're the buildings to the southeast of the Columbia Building, but I didn't identify them by address because the developer doesn't have them under contract. BTW, I never know what readers are going to find interesting. I thought this Slavic Village story was going to be huge. It's about a total makeover of Slavic Village. But only about one thousand people have read the article so far. By comparison, I didn't think as many people would be interested in the Greyhound station story. Instead, it's at 24,000 views and still climbing rapidly. I thought the order of popularity of those two stories would be reversed.

I would. It was often unusable, unless you're into parasailing.

Cleveland: Slavic Village: Development and News
Some more pictures from yesterday's community meeting, including some crappy pictures of images displayed on the screen. Presenting from left to right are Councilman Starr, Donnie DiGeronimo and Emerick Corsi A conceptual rendering of the proposed FinTech financial literacy center, which could be located on the ground floor of The Village 55 building. Buildings shown in blue are part of the first phase. Those in white are a mix of those controlled by the development team or by other owners who share the development's vision and desire for redeveloping their properties. Potential streetscape resulting from the GCRTA transit corridor plan, which is a separate endeavor. But the view shows the Columbia Building at right, which is owned by the development team and targeted for renovation. At center is the Olympia Building whose owner also intends to renovate that property.

Lessons from Other States & Countries
America has no idea how to build, sustain and protect cities. And the few places that are vibrant like this are so expensive to live in. Why? Limited supply. And so we blame each other rather than fix it.

Cleveland: Slavic Village: Development and News
Big plans for reviving Slavic Village By Ken Prendergast / May 11, 2023 Two new mixed-use buildings, historic renovations of others, hundreds of mixed-income apartments and retailers that could include a grocery store are envisioned as part of a $60 million to $70 million redevelopment of the North Broadway Corridor in Cleveland’s Slavic Village neighborhood. And that’s just the first phase envisioned by a development team called The Village Partnership comprised of several of Northeast Ohio’s most prolific developers.
