I understand the complaint that our transit system, specifically the trains, does not "go where I want to go." But the thing we have to ask ourselves is, "Why don't we put things where the system does go?" That's the guiding principal behind Transit Oriented Development. Glad to see someone else is catching on. But it's too bad that we here in Greater Cleveland are behind other metros. They've already caught on.

Yay pedestrians! And you didn't even have to use the zoom to make it seem like there were even more of them! BTW, the sidewalks along East 9th Street (er, Rock & Roll Boulevard) ought to be widened. Sometimes you have to squeeze past the light/utility poles.

Relocating to Cleveland: some advice, please?
I love Little Italy. The only downside is that it doesn't have a grocery store (c'mon, not even an Italian grocer!). It does get real busy on the weekends/evenings, so if you have visitors who have to drive there, the parking is pretty difficult. Not sure what to say about the kitchen situation though! Anyone else here got some suggestions?

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
Ray's looks awesome! I've never heard of it, and would have loved a place like that when I was a teenager and into BMX. Ray's is real close to an area I cover for Sun. Since the reporter for the area Ray's is in is leaving Sun at the end of the month, I will see about doing an article about the place. We're trying to attract young readers to Sun, anyway!

Fairview Park: Westgate Mall Development
When I first started covering FP back in 1994, there was a push by some citizens (one of whom was Norm Bringman who later became city council president) to get the library to be built on the site of one of the former Lorain Road motels. The goal was to get it built near the street and eliminate a motel's blighting influence on the community. Alas, the county library system demolished the viable Naked Furniture store (which relocated to Middleburg Hts) and put the library far back from the street. The rationale was to put the library closer to the high school/middle school campus just south of Lorain near West 213th. That's the same rationale being used for the new community recreation center, which was built on the site of a ragtag trailer park! Probably more than you wanted to know, but that's the history.

The agency's widely-anticipated monthly assessment of the global oil balance said that stockpiles of crudes and fuels held by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development group of industrialized nations were falling at a pace of 1.26 million barrels a day so far this year and could spell the largest stock draw in a January-to-March period in more than 10 years. The IEA, which represents the energy security interests of the OECD, also red- flagged an unusual draw down in crude stocks.

If you miss a Circulator, catch a 75X at West 117th and Clifton. It drops you off closer to the temporary station entrance at the Rapid station than the Circulator does (of course, the walk from Cove to West 117th is much longer!).

Jacobs Group's PR consultant Bill Fullington didn't release the initial list of retailers until Monday (3-12). You're forgetting something... this is the Jacobs Group. They still design projects the old-fashioned way -- auto-centric and with little or no mixed use. They are. The city is using a NOACA TLCI grant to develop a plan for creating a more mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented plan for the west end of Lorain Road (from West 223rd to the North Olmsted line). What they do there will guide the rest of the Lorain corridor.

Here's some data from Washington state DOT, but this isn't for a new highway. It's for highway widenings, and they may not be for rural areas... Here's a sampling of project construction costs: + SR 18 widening in rural King County - about $24.5 million per mile. + US 12 widening south of Tri Cities - about $3.7 million per mile. + I-5 widening in Vancouver – about $20.2 million per mile. + I-90 truck climbing lanes east of Cle Elum and at Vantage – about $1 million per mile. + I-5 HOV lanes from Tukwila to Fife – about $7 million per mile. These costs are for construction only and do not include costs for engineering and design and for a widely-varying factor, land acquisition costs.

I'm under the impression that Cleveland's Hispanic population is growing. If that's correct, and if it's growing faster than the Asian population, that could have kept the Asian percentages from growing larger. What's the data on that?

I hope they can preserve some pieces of the building (cornices, details, bricks, etc) and incorporate them into whatever building(s) might ultimate take its place. The building is in a good location, near East 55th and St. Clair, so I hope the vacant lot gets new life soon, but with some touches of the old preserved. P.S., welcome aboard JoeM76!

The density is good, but since I can't picture what West 32nd looks like, is there mixed-use in the area? If there is a lack of it, that would concern me more than whether this new development comes up to the sidewalk. As long as there are corner stores, mid-block cafes, a video store (non-adult) and the occasional restaurant, I'm a candidate to move in.

That's actually one building called the Eastman. Just 10 years ago, it was a grimy derelict with no windows where vandals and drug addicts would go.
