  1. The General Assembly included $146 million for the project in a recent $2.3 billion transportation package, a move seen by rail enthusiasts as a good first step. I get tired of that reference "enthusiasts." It marginalizes the project and its backers. The next time anyone sees an article referring to advocates of a highway or airport project as "enthusiasts" would you please let me know? Of course, if I also asked you avoid contact with me until you do see it, I would conclude my request with "it was nice knowing ya."
  2. That's a surprise, since CB Richard Ellis' last report spoke of expansion at Chase. Class ‘A’ quarterly net absorption was 46,477 square feet with Chase expanding into 13,427 square feet in Chase Financial Tower. Hmmm
  3. That doesn't sound right. How many housing units were built at Riverbend Condos or the Triangle at University Circle (both in 1988). Those are just two major projects off the top of my head. Does that number include just one building, or all the units in the building? An interesting stat I once heard is that, in 1976, there 9 hew homes built in Cleveland.

In the first few pictures, the sprawl was pretty evident. But one could see some decent grid patterns and some density (Long Beach, near downtown, etc). I haven't been to LA since 1982, but I do keep up on what they're doing with development, transit etc. I'm long overdue for a return visit. BTW, I absolutely love this picture... Like a bunch of Legos were put on a blanket and someone pushed it upward at the center.
  5. Unfortunately, no news. I'm always surprised at how many people drive into Cleveland from Lorain County on Lake/Clifton just to enjoy the more scenic drive (as compared to I-90). I hope that's a good sign for the proposed Lorain - Cleveland regional rail service!

    What's on during that time?
  7. He's talking Detroit. When Pope says "our city" he means the D.

Sangamon County sheriff's Lt. Jack Campbell said pilot Adam Cochran, 25, of Hilliard, Ohio, and his passenger, Marc McKinnie, 21, whose hometown wasn't available, Geez, didn't the reporter think to look on UrbanOhio to see where you're from? I mean, c'mon, whatever happened to investigative journalism?? Glad you're still with us. Surviving is a good habit to keep.
  9. That's 515 Euclid Avenue. It's a parking garage with retail spaces on the ground floor. There is a thread about it at: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=3198.msg3878#msg3878

Quite simply, these are devastating times for the U.S. auto industry (see the BBC report above). Even more tragic is that the losses they are taking could have been avoided if they had the long-term vision that the foreign automakers, particularly those in Japan, had. Ford and GM made a disproportionate share of their profit off of SUV sales. With SUV sales down 45 percent, one can only imagine what will happen to these companies. Remember too that even before the price of oil shot above $60 (and stayed above), and then Katrina hit, GM was already in bad shape because of pensions and health care costs. Their grand plan to save the company was to come out with an all new exciting line of friggin SUVs. Something like $5 billion was invested in retooling factories and coming up with the new models. Good plan guys. It's clear you can't see what's coming beyond the tips of your noses.
  11. I see from this picture.... ....that you were less than three blocks from my condo. Next time you're in the neighborhood, drop me a note by e-mail or pm and we can get a cup of coffee, bite to eat or whatever. What brought you to my neighborhood anyway? A stay at the Days Inn (across the street from me) or with family in Lakewood?

Sounds like we need an urban-minded radio host in this town to talk about all that's a-happening here
  13. If that's what our Chinatown looked like, you'd see my white face in that picture, because I would be down there all the time (if not become a resident)!
  14. Terrific article, jamiec. When it comes to building urban stuff, we can always learn a lot from Europe.

Has anyone approached Norfolk Southern to see if they want someone do some form of public art involving that bridge? I can't see that bridge, which has more than 70 freight trains a day traveling over it, being used as a public art canvas, unless it's merely going to be "dressed up." Sounds the like point is moot anyway with the value engineering stuff.

See the series of articles I posted a few days ago in the Cleveland-Lorain Commuter Rail thread. Many of those articles note that transit investments, especially for rail transit, are increasingly being financed by private investments in transit-oriented developments along the proposed rail corridor. Using the existing, locally funded roadways is an excellent idea for funding transit investments. But federal funding is incredibly difficult to secure. And next year will be the last that the federal Highway Trust Fund, from which most federal transit capital grants are sourced, will have a positive account balance. Barring significant additional revenues, the HTF is projected to have a deficit of more than $2 billion in 2008, that is projected to worsen to nearly $22 billion by 2012. Federal funding for highways and transit will have to be cut in half in order to avoid the deficits -- or more revenue sources are needed. I just finished researching and writing an article about this impending crisis for the Midwest High Speed Rail Association newsletter. I would encourage all of you to learn about this serious problem by visiting: http://www.surfacecommission.gov/
  17. Isn't that the truth! Too bad a number of those who spend their energy figuring out why things won't work seem to be employed at NOACA. But they sure don't have the market cornered!

So, how about that Old Brooklyn redevelopment! A patently transparent attempt to bring this discussion back around to its originally stated purpose! Here's another attempt: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=8513.0
  19. Golly, there sure are a lot of them there Chinese in Hong Kong! :weird:
  20. Oh the pressure!
  21. Hadn't heard anything. Perhaps this explains why Stark was having a harder time trying to get the former owner, Duane Cameron, to sign a development agreement....maybe because Cameron was interested only in finding a buyer for the lot?
  22. Damn. I totally forgot about it, even though I wanted to go. Damn.
  23. I remember when the movie was being shot here, and the director said he chose downtown Cleveland because unlike a lot of other downtowns, it still had many older, pre-WWII buildings. I also remember that, when it was filmed during the winter of 1982-83, the director complained about the lack of snow. We were having a very mild winter that year, and some fake snow had to be brought in by the movie's crew!

Since Old Brooklyn hasn't seen the decline of other Cleveland neighborhoods, it has little vacant land for new development. Thus most of what is happening is limited to infill housing and building renovations. Here are some of them: > Most notable was the reopening of Deaconness Hospital as the MetroHealth South Campus, where 450 back-office functions from the main campus were relocated there starting last fall. A second phase would relocate and expand skilled nursing facilities and senior health programs from multiple providers to MetroHealth South. > Infill housing includes the Stanford Homes, a three-unit townhome project on Stanford Avenue, just west of MetroHealth South. For more information, see http://progressiveurban.com/stanford/index.html > Two old, 3-story buildings at either end of the Pearl Road bridge are being renovated, or about to be renovated with ground-level retail and 18 apartments each. One is the Krather Building; the other is the Masonic Building. > The vacated Charter One check processing center on Memphis Avenue is being renovated into a Cuyahoga County services center, and will see at least 100 jobs relocated to it (I can't remember the number). > The vacated McIntyre Center, an old party center on Pearl Road, is being renovated into a call center and will house 100 jobs. Those are just a few projects off the top of my head.
