Amtrak & Federal: Passenger Rail News
So if you want to see/photograph Amtrak in daytime across Northern Ohio today, the eastbound Lake Shore Ltd #48 is running about 7 hours late. It was just leaving Chicago last night (on time) when a freight train derailed in Gary, IN, blocking all main tracks. The tracks were cleared overnight. It is due to arrive Toledo about 10 a.m., Sandusky about 11 a.m., and Cleveland about 12 noon or soon thereafter. This is assuming it doesn't lose any more time. You can track it here: https://dixielandsoftware.net/cgi-bin/gettrain.pl?seltrain=48&selyear=2024&selmonth=12&selday=22 Or officially here: https://www.amtrak.com/track-your-train.html

Fairview Hospital’s North Campus plan gets Rx By Ken Prendergast / December 22, 2024 Although a conceptual plan for Fairview Hospital’s North Campus $150 million redevelopment won unanimous support from Cleveland Planning Commission on Friday, commissioners attached a few conditions to it. At the same meeting, the commission also recommended that Cleveland City Council approve rezoning the hospital’s properties with a more appropriate classification. The hospital is located at 18101 Lorain Ave. in Cleveland’s Kamms Corners neighborhood. MORE: https://neo-trans.blog/2024/12/22/fairview-hospitals-north-campus-plan-gets-rx/

City to invoke Modell Law against Browns move By Ken Prendergast / December 20, 2024 Cleveland City Council President Blaine Griffin confirmed this week that the city will invoke the state’s Modell Law to stop the Cleveland Browns from leaving the city for a new stadium site in suburban Brook Park. He also said the city and county are in a joint effort to keep the team playing its home games downtown with Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne leading the fight. Chicago: Transit News
UrbanOhio has been around for 20 years and I'm starting the first Chicago transit thread. That's how long it's been since Chicago has had a major transit capital project (new Orange Line in 1993 and Metra's North Central Service in 1996), although the South Shore West Lake Corridor Project (new branch to Dyer, IN) and its double-tracking project to Michigan City, IN both should count as Chicagoland major capital projects... Feds award $1.9 billion to the $5.4 billion project. A big reason why we do so few big infrastructure projects anymore is because they're way too expensive...$1 billion per mile for a new rail line??

The Future of America and Its Cities
That's one reason why Canada is awesome. Just 100 miles north of us, in the metropolis of London, Ont., they're building BRT, they have six daily round-trip trains to Toronto and they're going vertical. Our AI overlords say..... There are at least 10 high-rise buildings under construction in London, Ontario that are planned to be at least 60 meters tall. London is also seeing an increase in high-rise construction downtown and in the surrounding areas. The CEO of Downtown London, Barbara Maly, says that over the next five years, more than 5,500 residential units will be built downtown. Many of these will be mixed-use developments, with some commercial space on the main floor and some office and residential space above.

The Future of America and Its Cities
And that's why it's embarrassing for California. We used to look to California to see what tomorrow's national trends would be. If California's inability to build is a harbinger, that's not good for America. But it's hardly a surprise.

Cleveland NWSL bid falls short, seeks future team By Ken Prendergast / December 17, 2024 Denver appears to have outbid its nearest rivals, including Cleveland and Cincinnati, for the 16th expansion team in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). A Denver-based ownership group is reported to be exclusively negotiating a $105 million to $120 million fee to land the team — or roughly double the previous record high expansion fee of $53 million paid last year by a Boston group.
