Great Lakes Brewing revisits Scranton Peninsula move By Ken Prendergast / September 10, 2024 NEOtrans has learned that one of Ohio’s oldest craft brewers is not only seeking to remain in Cleveland but is dusting off old plans to move its production facilities to Scranton Peninsula in Cleveland’s Flats. Sources familiar with the Great Lakes Brewing Company’s (GLBC) plans said that if public assistance can be found to provide enough developable land for the company’s expansion, it will likely relocate there. Below is a PR. This is the former CAF USA plant in Horseheads, NY (Elmira area)..... Siemens’ Investment in America’s First High-Speed Rail Plant a Milestone that Marks the Beginning of a Transformative New Industry WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sept. 9, 2024 — U.S. High Speed Rail (USHSR) said today that Siemens’ plans to build the nation’s first high-speed rail production facility in upstate New York marks a “milestone” that signals the beginning of an entire new industry to support the build-out of a nationwide bullet train network. “High-speed rail is now a reality in America with projects underway or being planned across the country,” said Ezra Silk, Political Director of the U.S. High Speed Rail Coalition. “This commitment by Siemens marks a milestone in the creation of a new industry to build and operate state-of-the-art high-speed rail. America’s new electric high-speed rail industry will spark new businesses, technologies, innovations and careers, create millions of good-paying union jobs and reduce dependence on highly polluting fossil fuels.” “The U.S. high-speed rail industry has the potential to become an economic force as big and powerful as the automotive industry,” Silk added. Siemens Mobility, Brightline West and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced the $60 million investment in upstate New York, in partnership with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). Production is expected to begin in 2026. Siemens’ train, the American Pioneer 220, will operate Brightline West’s electric high-speed rail trains from Las Vegas to Southern California, scheduled for completion by the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. The train will reach travel 218 miles at a top speed of 220 mph. Travel time is projected at just over two hours, compared to four hours by car. Momentum has been building for high-speed rail in America. Under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Biden Administration has stepped up investment, identifying corridors nationwide for planning and design funding. The Administration recently invested $6.3 billion to support Brightline West and California High-Speed Rail’s initial project segment in the Central Valley. About USHSR USHSR mobilizes leading labor unions, companies, and public servants to advance bullet train investments and policies. The U.S. High Speed Rail Coalition has aggressively advocated for funding for California High Speed Rail, Brightline West, and other key projects and recently created a guide, “High-Speed Rail Project Initiation: A Roadmap for Advocates”, to help local leaders get bullet train projects off the ground in their communities and regions.

Amtrak & Federal: Passenger Rail News
When I have taken the Lake Shore east, I've noticed that the train is not very full leaving Cleveland buy gets more full the farther east you go into New York state. Heading west, the train seems to be full the entire way with people coming and going and keeping the seats warm.

There's some gory details in this article. If true, sounds like a legit psychopath. Deshaun Watson is sued for sexual assault and battery https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/deshaun-watson-is-sued-for-sexual-assault-and-battrey Looks like he's lost his teammates as well....

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
When I was in middle school (1978-81), our ski club went to Brandywine. From the chairlift going up the long slope by the mill (I seem to recall that slop was called Brandy back then), I remember seeing the paper mill being active, with lots of steam coming out of it in winter and freight cars parked at the mill. Chessie System stopped using the line around that time when all the steel mills started shutting down and the Staggers Rail Deregulation Act passed in 1980, making it easier for railroads to abandon right of way. If it wasn't for the national park buying the tracks, that valley line would've been gone too.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
@bwheats If I compare MSA's, YOY from March 2023 to March 2024, there is strong growth in employment for Cleveland but there is a slight decline (-583) for Akron and nice uptick 3,369 for Canton. Where are you seeing 129K? Looks like Cleveland MSA and Pittsburgh MSA blew the doors off their peers in the region. EDIT: and am I reading this right that the Youngstown-Warren MSA lost 40,544 jobs from March 2023 to March 2024? What am I reading wrong here? EDIT2: and now when I look at the Cleveland BLS back data, I see Cleveland MSA employment falling hard (-17,331) from March 2023 to March 2024. WTF??

Walton Apts seeks to restore Clark’s walkability By Ken Prendergast / September 9, 2024 A planned affordable senior housing development at 3517 Walton Ave. in Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood won universal praise Friday from the City Planning Commission. In fact, the commission considered it a potential game-changer for the neighborhood and especially Clark Avenue which, in this growing La Villa Hispana community, is lined with car-centric land use patterns, making it pedestrian-unfriendly. Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I don't think it would make Amtrak expansion infeasible but it might complicate it...depending on how it is designed. And that design hasn't started. City council will vote Monday to pay the designer.

Tremont townhouses on Towpath put on slow path By Ken Prendergast / September 6, 2024 A unique townhouse development, one of the first that would be built directly facing the Towpath Trail, was on a fast path toward design approval and a zoning change. But City Planning Commission members decided that that path was a little too fast for it and urged that the developer and its architect go back and get more input from the neighborhood first. Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
You know what that means? Dude is OLD! 🤪 Here's my East 18th Street extension idea. Also provides a direct ped access from future development of the Muny Lots and could be designed to accommodate a Waterfront Line extension bridge deck next to the street deck over the railroad tracks.

@neony has plenty of railroad knowledge. He was one of my rail advocacy mentors in the 1980s. Somewhere in here, I posted my own diagram of how I thought the East 18th extension should be built. I'll repost it when I get home.

Samsel Supply to close its doors after 66 years By Ken Prendergast / September 5, 2024 When they sold their properties on Old River Road in Cleveland’s Flats East Bank to a developer nearly three years ago, Samsel family members had declined to answer where they would relocate their commercial supply business, Samsel Supply Company. No one else in local real estate circles seemed to know either. Turns out the reason was a simple one that few had considered — they’re not relocating. They’re closing.
