  1. I just found out at 5 pm today April 6 that the Waterfront Line was running. And I thought I had a good idea of what's going on...
  2. Dracula became immortal by sucking the blood out of his victims. Similar business model.

Thanks for coming. See you next year. Shane Bieber needs elbow surgery. He had pain after his Opening Day start that continued through his outing in Seattle. Imaging revealed an injury to the same ligament that gave him trouble last year. Surgery was determined to be the best path forward this time.
  4. American Courage was due to be in port at the Cleveland Bulk Terminal on April 3. Perhaps because of construction work there (including the removal of the Huletts), the ship handling capacity has been limited? https://www.portofcleveland.com/maritime-logistics/tools/vessel-arrival-schedule/

Gen Z Has Fewer Drivers & Our Communities Are Not Ready What was once a right of passage for teenagers across America, obtaining a drivers license in high school, is now viewed with far less zeal today by Generation Z. That's the takeaway from recent data released by the Federal Highway Administration which showed that only 25% of American 16-year olds obtained their drivers license in 2023, down from 43% in 1997. https://www.remainplaces.com/post/gen-z-is-driving-less-our-communities-are-not-ready

We're not the only ones. Mass-transit mecca Toronto keeps making plans, scrapping them with a new government, makes new plans, scraps them again with a new government, and so on. My friends up there are going very frustrated but it looks like they may finally have settled on building the Relief Subway and the Scarborough extension. Back to TOD -- I do believe that rail does a better job of attracting/encouraging TOD, however. We just don't have the dynamics to justify rail investments except in a few places to fix what's wrong with our rail system and to adjust it to better serve fast-growing nodes (like UC). Most of that can be accomplished with 2- to 4-mile extensions here and there.
  7. That Chicago map is a hot, confusing mess. The Ohio-Columbus Tunnel listing sure caught my attention!
  8. Just because they can doesn't mean they will.

There's a difference between a study and a plan. This is a plan. Columbus had to do the same planning in order to get the federal funding to build it. In the same announcement by the FTA, Columbus also got planning money to develop an additional route.
  10. Expansion of the rail system is the last thing on the minds of anyone at RTA. They had to be shamed into saving the existing rail system and its fleet.
  11. Playhouse Square arrives at Greyhound Station By Ken Prendergast / April 5, 2024 Playhouse Square Foundation this week closed a deal to acquire the Greyhound station in Downtown Cleveland to expand the theater district northward and convert the station into an entertainment/dining venue, according to a source familiar with the transaction. While Playhouse Square officials were mum on their plans, a spokesperson told NEOtrans that Greyhound bus operations will be relocated on a schedule that works for them and their customers. 12. Cleveland planners OK 150-foot-tall billboard in Flats By Ken Prendergast / April 5, 2024 Cleveland City Planning Commission today approved placing a 150-foot-tall pole-mounted billboard at a Flats East Bank property owned by an affiliate of controversial local businessman Tony George. It is the second of three billboards that George has received city permission to build in order to fulfill a court-approved settlement prior to demolishing an oft-vandalized building for the Irishtown Bend Park in Ohio City. 13. Perhaps it might calm down? There will be nothing to speculate about.
  14. Yes, it's tall enough to be seen from the Shoreway. Seems no one else wanted it. George owns the land.
  15. It was approved 5-1. Slife voted against it.
  16. Tony George plans at 1146 Old River Rd this 150-foot-tall billboard as a result of his legal agreement resulting from Irishtown Bend. In my opinion, this is an abomination.
  17. Rezoning approved 4-2
  18. Thanks. So I'm watching the Planning Commission meeting this AM. The proposed rezoning for My Place Group's proposed development on Lorain between West 50th and 52nd is getting residential pushback with discussion of the proposed rezoning now approaching one hour.
  19. Here's a better chestnut: You can choose how best to wait. But wait you will.
  20. A day after Florida bans bus and bike lanes, while promoting more highway widenings, Miami Beach is asking employers to stagger work shifts to relieve traffic congestion. Florida would do absolutely anything before considering transit. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/miami-beach/article272649688.html
  21. Wow. I was at South Kenton station in May 2007 and video recorded the action there during the lunch hour, counting 30 trains.
  22. No wonder this is the most popular thread on UrbanOhio. We've combined the stadium issue with IKEA. Downgrading or removing highways where deemed divisive is now a policy with funding at the Federal Highway Administration. It is happening in multiple urban areas around the country (e.g. Portland, Milwaukee, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo to name a few off the top of my head).
  23. So he opens at Tower City food court, does great business there, and is now closed. WTF?? https://clevelandmagazine.com/food-drink/articles/kevin-o'connell-to-consolidate-cleveland-sandwich-co.-open-new-french-concept-in-cleveland

People Hate the Idea of Car-Free Cities—Until They Live in One Removing cars from urban areas means lower carbon emissions, less air pollution, and fewer road traffic accidents. So why are residents so resistant? https://www.wired.com/story/car-free-cities-opposition/
  25. Some ballparks villages don't have residential, and others aren't residential-heavy. The State of Ohio doesn't believe the city should have any say whatsoever with regards to leases of lake-reclaimed land (aka submerged land). The state believes only it can make that call. Once I proposed swapping the locations of the rail transit lines with I-77. But I like this idea better. You could run the rail lines in the median of an "I-77 boulevard" into downtown.
