  1. How 'bout that
  2. @Blimp City I was almost right across the street from you. A few of SHW from my strolling around downtown yesterdiddy...
  3. Downtown Cleveland's recovery accelerated in 2023 By Ken Prendergast / March 18, 2024 In a data-heavy report released today, Downtown Cleveland, Inc. (DCI) outlined its achievements in continuing the recovery of Cleveland’s business and hospitality center and one of Cuyahoga County’s fastest-growing residential areas. The data, contained in the 2023 Downtown Cleveland Economic Development Report, says the recovery of Cleveland’s central business district is outpacing that of its peer cities in Ohio and the Great Lakes region. 4. I've heard from Cliffs execs that they don't view the fight for US Steel as over. Perhaps that's wishful thinking, but that's what is their thinking.
  5. That's correct. You can also find my 2003 Lakefront Bypass report I did for the Cleveland Waterfront Coalition by doing a google search. Another option is, if you built the lakefront bypass, you'd have four largely freight-free rail spokes into a downtown lakefront hub -- lakefront to Airport, lakefront to Collinwood, lakefront to Avon, lakefront to Geauga Lake. Or they could be done as an X routing with Airport-Collinwood and Avon-Geauga Lake sharing the ROW from West Boulevard RTA to just east of East 9th on the lakefront.

  7. Flats On Pearl OK’d, Row On Garden tabled By Ken Prendergast / March 17, 2024 A next step for developer Kostas Almiroudis went forward when the Cleveland Landmarks Commission approved plans for the mixed-use Flats On Pearl. But the commission didn’t take as many steps forward as Almiroudis wanted, in requesting the demolition of four neighboring, decayed houses and a small townhouse development that would replace them. 8. Wished I'd gotten to see the Shaker station and looked around a bit, but I haven't had an occasion to ride the Red Line since the Feast of the Assumption last August. Shows how unimportant transit has become, at least to me. Although I did ride the bus two times in the eight months since. Sadly, that right there means I've ridden transit more than most Greater Clevelanders.

Red Line cars turn 40 this year. Shaker trains are 3-5 years older.
  10. UrbanOhio scooped me! New design for Cleveland Shoreway tower OK’d By Ken Prendergast / March 15, 2024 A desire to make a proposed residential tower overlooking Cleveland’s Edgewater Park more viable produced a design that won for it more praise from a city review panel. The proposed 13-story Shoreway tower grew from 95 apartments to 112 and shrunk its floorspace from 204,400 square feet to 140,000. In so doing, its grid-like exterior gained an intentionally distorted and sculpted appearance that earned it unanimous praise. The Bank of America has other insights suggesting that population growth is occurring. https://neo-trans.blog/2023/06/08/bofa-theyre-coming-to-cleveland/ And while GDP is growing in Cuyahoga County (and not in its collar counties), the suggestion is that people increasingly live in collar counties but increasingly work in Cuyahoga County. Seems to me there's an opportunity here to reverse that, such as the Oklahoma City incentive @MyPhoneDead mentioned. https://neo-trans.blog/2023/12/12/cuyahoga-countys-economy-surges/
  13. First up is Design Review -- probably Ohio City Design Review one week from today although I haven't seen their agenda yet. Then Landmarks.

If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via @thediscourse study. This isn’t just about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice.

  16. A new topic on the Detroit-Superior Bridge project is open here...
  17. Now that this project has funding, it's a bona fide project and thus deserving of its own thread. Streetcar deck of Detroit-Superior Bridge wins $7 million for bike/ped path By Ken Prendergast / March 13, 2024 Cuyahoga County won $7 million in federal funds today for the reactivation of the streetcar deck of Detroit-Superior Veterans Memorial Bridge linking Downtown Cleveland and Ohio City. But instead of bringing back streetcars for the first time in 70 years, the funding would start planning for permanently reopen the deck as a pedestrian-bike path protected from rain, snow and fast-moving cars, trucks and buses on the roadway deck above. 18. Cleveland’s new Bridgeworks plan takes next steps By Ken Prendergast / March 13, 2024 Bridgeworks, a mixed-use development proposed in Cleveland’s Hingetown section of Ohio City and that’s gone through several iterations, will be back in front of city design-review panels this month in the hopes of getting construction started this year. If approvals are granted, demolition of existing buildings at the northeast corner of West 25th Street and the Detroit-Superior Bridge could start in the coming months. 19. @ExPatClevGuy The mayor's spokesperson responded after I posted the article to two questions I had. I will add some of this to the article... 1) What is Cleveland's share of these funds? - Cleveland’s final allocation (TBD) from the overall $200M Bloomberg Philanthropies Sustainable Cities initiative will be utilized to fund an innovation team (“i-team”) with up to three dedicated staff. - The city will also receive multi-year, in-depth, customized policy and technical assistance in collaboration with community-based organizations to mobilize public, private, and philanthropic investments 2) And how does Cleveland plan to use the funds? - A dedicated three -person BASC Innovation team* will work hand in hand with city cabinet leaders and city community partners using data driven and human centered design ( such as Climate Risk Vulnerability Assessment best practices from the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCOM) and Results Based Analysis) as a foundation to advance the equitable neighborhood level deployment of climate solutions to reduce emissions, build resilience and increase racial wealth equity in partnership with community based organizations and residents. The city will also engage with the dedicated policy and technical assistance resource partners in this program - such as PolicyLink - to attract additional federal and other climate action funding to Cleveland. *The first two BASC Innovation or “i-team” leadership jobs will be posted this week!
  20. Good move
  21. Cleveland, other climate havens win Bloomberg bucks By Ken Prendergast / March 12, 2024 Cleveland was selected today by Bloomberg Philanthropies as one of 25 U.S. cities to join Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities (BASC) and be the recipient of $200 million divided roughly equally among them. BASC is a three-year initiative designed to leverage historic levels of federal funding to incubate and implement transformative local solutions to build low-carbon, resilient, and economically thriving communities.
