Help! Looking to dip porch rail in Cleveland? Any suggestions?
So we have decided to concentrate on on the columns and are currently using soy gel, works great brush it on cover with plastic and the paint layers bubble up and peel off. Like I said it works great unless the bottom layer is milk paint, which I think ours is because the paint remover isn't making a dent in it. I did some research on the web and it appears that I am going to have to use ammonia and steel wool to get that off or at least smooth. MTS, thanks for the suggestion. I know I have tried peel away and a few others.

Help! Looking to dip porch rail in Cleveland? Any suggestions?
There is a picture of the house on my semi-defunct blog about the house. thisolderedhouse.blogspot.com No close ups of the railings though. I think I exaggerated there is only about 45 feet of railing. But the paint is stubborn and we are making very little progress on it. There are about 4 thick cracked coats on it.

Help! Looking to dip porch rail in Cleveland? Any suggestions?
Ok, I thought I would throw this out here since I am striking out elsewhere. I have a on it's way to be being beautiful house in Lakewood with a great front porch that unfortunately has approximately 55 ft of porch railing that needs to be stripped and repainted. Several people have recommended Eagle Paintstripping (I think that they were on Columbus Rd in the flats) which has apparently ceased to operate in the last 2 years or so due to EPA costs. My neighbor swears that Near West Woodworking on W 25th working has a dip tank but I know there are for rent signs on the building (not sure which space is for rent) and nobody is answering the phone. Anybody know what is going on there?

Cleveland's Crown Jewel - Cuyahoga County Court House
Cool beans. I need to check and see if they do tours. After reading about all of the art and statues inside it seems like a good time.

Cleveland's Crown Jewel - Cuyahoga County Court House
Yeah, I pulled my original comment from Mayday's thread, it was off topic.Self-moderation or something like that. I used to walk past there everyday on my way from the W3 muni lot to Key Tower and never could figure out who they were.

Cleveland's Crown Jewel - Cuyahoga County Court House
http://www.cuyahogacounty.us/Bicentennial/pdf/crownjewel.pdf I found this on packet on the County Website when I was looking for information on who the the statues that flank the top of the South and North sides were. It is a packet of articles on the Courthouse and the Group Plan. One is an article on the restoration of the courthouse and there are few others included too. Any UO Shutterbugs want to get some detailed pictures of the Statues? I always have been fascinated by them but can never get a good look.

Excellent work. Where is that piece of granite that you took the reflection shot? That is a pretty sweet pic.

On a related note, I was wondering if Bobby Flay had anything scheduled when he is in town for Mike Symon's charity event. Perhaps a perogi throw down?

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Construction has visibly started on the Five Guys burgers in Lakewood. They are placing Jersey barriers in front of it on Detroit this morning. I am assuming to work on the facade and may the recessed patios that they show in the renderings.

Doh, I just read the article. I hope that Lakewood and Cleveland consider facilitating these conversion especially for multi-unit along Lake and Clifton.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
The lakewood house is on Bunts on the East side of the street two or three houses north of lakewood heights blvd. Lakewood has (or did have) a program that would loan $60,000 with attractive terms towards the conversion of a muliti family to a single. I will try to find a link. I believe that First Federal lakewood was a partner in the pilot house. Edit: Linky below http://www.ffl.net/content.asp?pageid=440&navid=506

Cleveland: Population Trends
One thing that I have notice is that the inner rings seem a little less geriatric in the last ten years. The boomers parents who moved in the "nice neighborhoods" in the 50s and 60s to raise there families are moving on to a better place at a pretty fast pace. The have been one of the reasons that the inner rings have been declining especially when you have 1 or 2 people in a house for 30 years that held 5 or 6 people when they had kids. So as these house get sold off hopefully the number will get a little bump. As long as they stay stable enough to attract young families. For example supposedly Lakewood is the youngest suburb on average age.

Cleveland: Population Trends
I am going to speak in generalities here so spare me any grilling. I don't know how any inner ring suburb or fully built out suburb or city neighborhood could possibly gain population today, outside of tearing down single family homes and building higher density housing or a mass influx of immigrants. Family size keeps dropping for non-immigrant families here in the states. Most people in the working class and above are having fewer kids and more than likely having them later. Even if you have the same vacancy rate in a city the population is going to shrink. I think in our cheap housing market this probably even true for renters with roommates. It's not like NYC where 3 people will share a 1 or 2 bed apartment, in most Ohio cities I would say that the norm is 2 people sharing a 3 bedroom unit and using the 3rd bedroom as a office or den. I agree that in the city limits of Cleveland the schools and bussing are one the huge problems that drive the destructions of entire neighborhoods. Especially because unlike a lot of cities around the country it is actually cheaper to live in the city than most of the burbs taxwise. EDIT: I just checked the Cuyahoga Auditors site, Cleveland proper is has the 28 th lowest effective tax rate(1.98%/$100k) out of the 80 seperate districts listed on the auditor site. So it does have that going for it. Plus if you work and live in Cleveland you would avoid double city income taxation.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
It's OK to be a wet blanket. They built last years team to beat the 2008 Celtics and we see how that turned out. I think the biggest upside to the Shaq trade is what they didn't have to give up to get him. Big Ben was looking like he was going to retire anyway and Sasha, well Sasha is what he is (mostly maddeningly inconsistent). Shaq is a new weapon added to the arsenal that they didn't have last year, while keeping the core team from last year intact. They need to keep Andy signed and pick up a few more pieces. It will be exciting again next year.

I think that is the plan. I doubt that he will get very many minutes during the regular season, just enough to give him his 15 points a game and keep his game sharp.

Shots from the top of Key Tower
(Sigh) Those photos take me back. I had the honor of working on the 50th Floor of Key Tower for close to 3 years. (beginning of 2003 to the end of 2005) I wish I had taken those pictures. One of the most amazing thing to see is a giant thunderstorm rolling in from the west across the suburbs and the lake from 50 floors up.

Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
What kind of a foundation does and aquarium need. I am asking this because the NC Aquarium at Indian Beach did a pretty substantial renovation a couple of years ago and I know that their giant Salt Water tank is sitting on concrete pilings that go down to bed rock. It is a sand barrier island down there but it seems to me that there would be substantial foundation work at the Power House to support a sizeable display.

Well, internet speculation about what NBA star will be coming to Cleveland, sure makes me happier than internet speculation about Lebron leaving Cleveland....

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
Youngstown is the exception to any rule applying to a city, except for maybe Flint. In it's prime it was essentially an overgrown company town dependant on a few companies in a single industry for the majority of it's employment and never developed a diverse economy. I love Youngstown, so i am not trying to bash it, just stating the facts as I see them. If you just take the people laid off starting with Black Monday (over 25,000)_and apply the 3-5 supporting job figure for each new job created, you get most of Youngstown's Population loss. The funny thing about Flint is that it's suburbs are now part of Detroit's sprawl.
