Running / Jogging Thread
I am planning on running the Cleveland 10-miler because I am going to be out of town the weekend of the Marathon, so I will miss my opportunity to run the half. Anybody else plan on running the 10 Miler?

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
Give em heck! I am not sure what the current numbers are but if they are still favorable don't forget to include the vacancy rates for Class A office space downtown to show that even though we suffered some huge losses in the last 10 years that downtown has managed to attract smaller organizations to fill the space and we are nearly fully occupied.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
I find that even though i can see into my neighbors house, (but not their Bathroom, thank god for frosted glass) I find a certain anomynity in living in the city (inner ring burb). I don't know if it is the kind of people or the overload of all the comings and goings of all of the people but I never feel like I am being watched or having tabs kept on me. Everyone seems to be too busy to care. I guess my feeling stem from growing up at the end of a dead-end rural road (no cul de sacs here) I had several neighbors that knew every car that came down the road to my house. Literally looking out there windows as the car drove by.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Let's hope so. This a touchy subject seeing that Stallworth ran over and killed a person with his Bentley (what a way to go BTW). I feel bad talking about the possible upside to the Browns.

What happens to Stallworth's contract if he goes to Jail? Does anybody know? Is Vick still technically under contract with Atlanta?

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
BK, where do you live and how is CH the "middle of the eastside"? I agree there could be strong draw for art movies and general releases in that area. Those theatres will spawn other restaurants, small shops and neighborhood needs. When the eastside starts at the Cuyahoga! :-D :-D

Cleveland: Catholic Diocese Church Closings
The roof makes sense, that was the only thing that I could come up with. St. James has a lot of buildings on it's campus and the Diocese just considered the upkeep to be too big of a liability. I know that both St. James and St. Lukes have large congregations with lots of families and kids. This not a case of 200 members.

Cleveland: Catholic Diocese Church Closings
I admit I am puzzled by the St. James closing over St.Luke, or actually why they would close two churchs in Lakewood?

Running / Jogging Thread
Did anyone else do the St. Malachi 5 miler in the flats on Saturday? There was a ton of people so I figured that there were other UOers running it too. I met my goal of sub 8 minute miles which was pretty good considering the last time that I ran that far was when I ran the 10k last fall. It was a nice day but it was cold standing around. I think my splits were all over the place. I got caught up in the pack at the start and my first mile was around an 8:15 and my second mile was probably closer to a 7:15. I quit paying attention after that but I going to guess that mile 5 was probably around a 9:00 because I had nothing left going up the hill to the finish line and was getting passed left and right.

This Is Why You're Fat!
Exactly what it says, its a pirate ship made out of meat. Yum. The most disturbing one to me for somereason was the Spam meatloaf with the Velvetta center then topped with Velvetta.

Are You Sick Of Defending Your City To Other People?
I really think that media (our own and national) really play to people perceptions about Ohio and her cities. I believe C-dawg has a rant somewhere on the forum. Like I said earlier, I just want to get to the point where I don't feel the need to defend my decisions and gush about the good things, without feeling that I to put an asterisk on my statement about crime or higher taxes. RR, You are right it is amazing the people who have never been to ohio and slag off Cleveland (probably from talking to the legions of ex-ohians) but I am also always amazed at the number of people who are blown away and love the city when they visit. My personal favorite is when I have friends sort of question why we live were we live and then go on and on how they love my street and the wood work and details of my house. It's funny.

Are You Sick Of Defending Your City To Other People?
The op-ed below prompted me to ask this question. It was sent to me by friend in Baltimore. I don't know if I am sick of defending my choice to live in the city as I am sick of the feeling that I am compelled to feel like I should defend it. I don't know why I feel like lower taxes and "higher rated" school districts are apparent reasons to live somewhere and aren't to be questioned but walkibility, diversity and quality older housing (IMO) are not. Oh and shorter commutes and proximity to downtown too. I guess I would apply this to Ohio and our regions too. I don't want to give everybody a big middle finger when they question where I live but I want to be able to gush about great it is without feeling like I need to defend my city and my choice. http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/oped/bal-op.viewpoint05mar05,0,827043.story Viewpoint: Baltimore doesn't need me to defend it By Seth Sawyers March 5, 2009 I'm tired of defending Baltimore. Not long ago, I overheard a buddy of mine, a guy I work with who lives in D.C., saying of my city, "It's OK, if you like boarded-up houses." He's got a point. From where I live near downtown, if you walk east or west, pretty soon you'll come to places in which you won't want to be - whole blocks with little life but plenty of what life looks like after it's left: houses missing roofs, graffiti on walls, hundreds of stenciled notices for numbers to call if something living gets trapped inside a dead place. ....

Favorite Music At The Moment?
It's always great to find other fans of these two classic bands. It's a damn shame they didn't receive the commercial attention they deserved, but that also has led to a sort of cult following. It's like finding hidden treasure. Hum's Downward is Heavenward record barely made a blip on the sales radar, but it was one of the best rock albums of the 90's. Very few bands can do back-to-back classics on the level that Hum did. It was so crazy when Cadillac revived "Stars" last year for their car commercials (it actually made me want to buy a Cadillac). My jaw hit the floor and I immediately called up a fellow friend who likes Hum as much as I do. The song fit well with the visuals, and that explosive wall of sound complements quick edits too. It was a slick ad campaign that didn't cheapen the song: I love Hum too but never got into FAILURE. Another good band from the 90's that I feel was overlooked was Sugar, Bob Mould's band after Husker Du. I probably have a fond spot for Sugar because the album "Copper Blue" came out just as I was getting away from Classic Rock and commercial radio. Love the Smashing Pumpkins, never cared for Billy Corgan (I know Billy Corgan IS the Smashing Pumpkins). "Siamese Dream" is tight all of the way through. Mellon Collie could have easily been cut to a single disc. I love "Adore" for some reason that I am really not sure of. Currently I am listening to the newish Ben Folds (2008 sometime?), "Way To Normal". It is yet another break-up album from the guy. I think he is on his fourth marriage. There is a great single with Regina Spektor called "You Don't Know Me" and possibly the song with the best title ever "B!tch Went Nuts!". He opens with a song about how he fell off the stage in Hiroshima and busted his face, got a concussion and then bled all over the piano. It must be nice to have a big enough following that you can put out what ever you feel like.

US Economy: News & Discussion
Jeez, that is the most depressing thing that I have read in a long, long, long time. It makes a ton of sense on the macro level. I have always heard (and had my suspicions) that the boomer retirements would be disastrous but that is the first time I have every seen numbers attached. I will be vomitting in my trash can now. I am sick to my stomach.
