Cleveland: Urban Gardens & Farms
Not exactly in Cleveland but next door in Lakewood. I thought I would give LEAF a plug on UO. My friend is one of the prime organizers. This organization is on it's 3rd sucessful year of a CSA ( community supported agriculture) delivering seasonal produce from local area farmers. This the second year for community gardens. Both programs have been very successful. http://www.leafcommunity.org/

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
"Obviously, if you're a kid born into an unwalkable situation, you don't know what you're missing, but living in an exurban hellhole on 1 acre without access to dirt bikes, guns, big mudholes, go-karts and other "real country" fun stuff, how do you keep from going nuts? Be an emo kid and cut yourself all the time? So that's where those kids come from! " I couldn't agree more. My parents house is in the country, in the middle of woods with about 20 acre on a lake. Guess what the boats and lake were great 4 months a year, but the other 8 months there was nothing to do. It sucked, but I didn't know any better. As a kid I was stuck with the two families on my deadend street with kids to play with, neither family that I am still friends with today. Compare that with the 60 kids on my street in Lakewood. One downside to living in the city was I read a ton as a kid, now I barely have time to read at all. Or maybe it the fact that I now have to act grown up with a house and a family and a job... Oh and the time I spend on Urban Ohio getting educated. Emo kids....that cracked me up...

Fraternities/Sororities
It really depends on the school. I did both routes, Greek and GDI because I transfered schools after my freshman year. I went to GMI in Flint (Now Kettering U) which was something like 75% or 80% greek. So if you you wanted any sort of social life, going greek was practically required. I decided that the school wasn't for me (too much engineering, too small) and that I wouldn't be returning the next year so I never actually was initiated because I decided that I really liked the guys in that chapter not the necessarily the frat. It worked out great for me I got all of the social benefits and none of the bad (hell week, etc). I am still friends with a few of the guys I pledged with. After I transfered to OU there was plenty to do and Greek life was not such a big deal I decided to stay independent. They big thing at OU that I think that C-dawg touch on somewhere above is that there are so many groups that party hard at OU that if that is all that you were looking for there is absolutely no reason to join a frat. I did club sports and they were mainly a reason to hold or go to a small sporting event and have a huge party. Overall I found that even the frat guys at OU were cool, I can think of one or two houses that fit the stereotypes but overall nobody was to pushy or gung-ho about greek life. I had a bunch of friends rush Sig Ep our sophomore year, and all that basically resulted in was some of their Sig Ep friends came to the parties that our group of friends from the dorms held. Not much to add, Greek life depends greatly on the school and it is what you make of it.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
Thanks for the complement KJP, Being mostly Italian and being from the Youngstown I have played a few games Bocce in my day. My dad plays in a couple of leagues there, as far as I can telling throwing the balls is just a distraction from BS'ing, arguing and drinking. Maybe a fall Urban Ohio bocce league at Stone Mad? Anybody interested?

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
I was in your neighborhood on Saturday too. I finally made it down to Stone Mad for a few pints on the patio. It is certainly impressive. I felt like Fred Flintstone. Beautiful bars, absolutely beautiful. I definitely will be going back. One complaint though. No drinks on the bocce court? How do you play bocce without a beer or wine in your hand? It's a counter weight to keep you from falling over when throwing the ball :-D

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Actually we could actually get away with a "Football" shaped traffic circle. Leave the corner infront of the terminal tower the way it is. The SE corner that connects to euclid already open enough to allow for a continous turn the way it is, I think the NE corner by key would have to be reworked into some sort of curve because it is too sharp as it is now . The Frankfort corner could be reworked into something like the euclid corner. Just a thought.

Ohio Bars
Ah, Courtside I spent much time there my 1st Senior year. I had two friends that were bartenders there and would only get charged a $5 tab after being there all night.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Once again, good job to all those who were the voices of reason last night. Could somebody give an idea of how large the convention center exhibition floor would need to be if it was to built under the Malls? Are we talking all of mall C and the north part of B? Or all of B and C?

Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
I am not so sure about this statement Americans love their chains, so do business travelers. I feel like I am in the minority when I am on business to seek out local places.

That too! I also love that old school revolving beer cooler behind the bar.

Ohio University Five Fest Riots, Tasers, Controversy, Etc.
shs96 what was your costume that year? My favorite of all time was somebody went as 10 ft tall empire state building complete with christmas lights in the windows. I have no idea how how he walked around on court street in it with out getting pushed over. That being said I agree with SHS96, for OU this is business as usual. Big party, cops and drunk (generally out-of-town)students don't mix. I was there for the time change riots too (which incidently started the first year as Frat vs Frat fight within a bar that spilled out onto the street as the bars let out an hour early) and the one year my buddy took a rubber bullet just standing there, it left a deep purple bruise on his calf the size of a softball. Ah, the good old days...

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Anybody know what happened with the Flat Iron? I've gotten a message that it was bought by a family that I went to highschool with and that they would be taking over this weekend. I am assuming that current owner was not able to recover after the fire last year and was in debt or just wanted out. The older brother in the family currently owns/runs the Fifth Season outside of Youngstown, which has great food (worth a stop if you are in the area, great food, great wine selection). He went to the Culinary School in Pittsburgh so he has a damn good idea what he is doing, so I am interested in what his take on pub food will be like.

Sports Illustrated fans rate Progressive Field best ballpark in baseball
And yet the Indians had the 5th lowest attendance in the League last year according to Terry Plutos column yesterday.Even with a team that was a game from going to the World Series. I think that the whole town has a hangover from the 90's teams that couldn't win it all... Agreed the term "the Prog" is unacceptable, maybe they could go old school and call Progressive Field the 'Teepee' ala Major League?

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
Am I crackpot or did the GI Bill have a hand in the shift to sprawl type development in the 1950's by providing mortgages to a large population of WWII veterans that may have not access to money to buy a new house before?

Lakewood: Development and News
...As previously stated as long as the Applebees is done right, I am OK with it. And everybody knows that Applebees is a rip off TGI Fridays which was a rip off of local places like the Rush or Around The Corner.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
http://blog.cleveland.com/pdgraphics/2008/03/29FGFLATS.pdf Link from Cleveland.com article Flats project grows; new plans show final layout, scope Posted by mjarboe March 28, 2008 11:32AM Click on image to download PDF. Most of a $500-million redevelopment along the east bank of the Flats could be finished by late 2010. That would include a 150-room hotel, more than 430 residences, a public park and about 975,000 square feet of offices. While the final design of buildings has not been released, the image shows relative size and location of planned buildings.

The BEER Thread
Thanks Boilover, I already got a copy of the bible in the kit. It is great, it goes from the first timer to advanced. I already realized that I probably screwed up the IPA by putting the bittering hops in too early. I like my IPA with some bite. It should be more than drinkable though. I am pretty luck that I've got a couple of family friends that have been serious homebrewers for years and once I get the hang of it they will be an invaluable resource. They both keg their beer and I was thinking I've got an old (but working) frig in my garage...hmmm btw... How bad was your first boilover to clean up?
