  1. I'll take it. It's nice to see Cleveland sandwiched between Boston and NYC..
  2. ^ Aw crap. I bit... Now let's see if the PD picks it up... Nice write up about the progress and a pretty sweet slideshow of the contruction from the Media Day on March 28(?) Article: http://www.examiner.com/commercial-real-estate-in-national/cleveland-medical-mart-digs-in Slideshow: http://cpsc.zenfolio.com/p571218352/slideshow

More fuel for the fire.... Read more at: http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/03/an-anti-college-backlash/73214/# An Anti-College Backlash? By Professor X Mar 31 2011, 7:55 AM ET 173 Americans are finally starting to ask: "Is all this higher education really necessary?" Since the appearance in The Atlantic of my essay "In The Basement of the Ivory Tower" (2008), in which I questioned the wisdom of sending seemingly everyone in the United States through the rigors of higher education, it's become increasingly apparent to me that I'm far from the only one with these misgivings. Indeed, to my surprise, I've discovered that rather than a lone crank, I'm a voice in a growing movement. I hadn't expected my essay, inspired by the frustrations of teaching students unprepared for the rigors of college-level work, to attract much notice. But the volume and vehemence of the feedback the piece generated was overwhelming. It drew more visitors than almost any other article on the Atlantic's web site in 2008, and provoked an avalanche of letters to the editor. It even started turning up in the syllabi of college writing classes, and on the agendas of educational conferences....
  5. Pretty slick. The Justice center looks huge in this pic, is that just a trick of perspective? Counting the bars on the facade of the rendering, it looks like a 20-ish story tower.
  6. fine fine fine... according to wiki there are 6.... still an amazing dearth in the Midwest's 2nd largest city considering it has swallowed most of its suburbs. Still notice what was listed first. Contents 1 Broad Ripple Village 2 Massachusetts Avenue 3 Fountain Square 4 Wholesale District 5 Canal and White River State Park 6 Indiana Avenue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indianapolis_Cultural_Districts When I have been there the only place I was ever recommended was Broad Ripple (or Carmel haha) , do Mass Ave and Fountain Square have a large residential component neighborhood feel (ala Tremont or German Village)?
  7. Um yeah, just in case everybody else didn't hear about this Bridge Safety issue. Last week apparently the northern outer most I-beam on the 40 year old plus Valley Parkway overpass split or cracked (just south of RT 82). I don't know if any rubble fell on the freeway or a car. This resulted in I-77 South being closed while they reinforced with an vertical I-beam, allowing one lane of South bound traffic to reopen. Then they reclosed I-77 south over the weekend to CUT OUT the beam section from the center support to theend AND the Concrete Deck back to the next solid beam. Apparently Valley parkway maybe open 1-way, they have the hole they cut out surrounded by Jersey Barriers with 4 ft of fence on top. I drive that way everyday and it's really bizarre to see a huge chunk, just cut out of a bridge. Link to an article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42227833/ns/local_news-cleveland_oh/ Oh yeah it recieved an A rating last year. I wonder what constitutes a "very visible crack"?

Avon? That's wacky, especially considering there are hotels at Rt 58 in Elyria. I technically used to work in Lorain for a year but that was at the old Ford plant on the border with Vermillion, and it was about 10 years ago. So I am no help. Edit: The cab part seems stupid too...
  9. I love those old street car stations too. I forgot my favorite kind of stand. grilled meat on a stick....
  10. Definitely expletive worthy. Fucking awesome work....
  11. Again, great job Burnham. Cleveland I believe that the retail that SurfOhio was talking about was more of the kiosk/booth variety, news stands, flower stands, coffee and smoothie stands, maybe even a rotation of the food truck guys, as opposed to store front variety. Strphanger great job on the principles, I think you/I/we will need to stress that under these guiding principles that the mall is downtown's back yard (open and green)and that public square should be it's front porch (social and interacting with the street).

Damn that felt good. It meant nothing but it felt good. I wonder who was playing center under that rubber Ryan Hollins Scooby Doo mask, because it sure wasn't the same Hollins that I saw play all year? "Jinkies! it's old man Smithers!"
  14. ^ Are you f'in kidding me? In the middle of the day?
  15. Sorry had to post it. :) Especially after I bowed out of this discussion after about 3 hours due to exhaustion....
  16. I don't think this is an exclusive phenomena to Cleveland, I know a lot of kids while I was in school from Columbus who never set foot in the short north or German village but I do believe that it's worse here because the lack of a large college in the city and the bombardment of negativity from the local media. The commuters to OSU and UC mix with the new adventurous transplant students who drag them around the city, who in turn drag their friends out when they are at home on break. Here it seems everybody goes away to school and when they come home they go their neighborhood chain. I know a group of guys from Independence that all they ever did was go to the Winking Lizard, even though they 15 minutes from downtown tops. As far as the media goes, Ted Strickland nailed it with his comments on the PD, why would anyone want to go explore Cleveland on their own if they received all of their information about the city from the PD and local TV. I wouldn't.
  17. ^haha. Still having nightmares about that thread?
  18. Great set. It's actually amazing how well the Pastel Townhouses off of Father Caruso have held up considering the pounding that recieve with the wind and winter weather off of the lake there. I beleive there is a thread around here if somebody would want to revive the "Great Siding Debate"...

^Children are just so ICK! and un-hip. Just kidding.
  20. I am amazed at the number of people that tought they were knocking down Public Hall for the Med Mart, most had no idea that the convention center was the part under the mall. It's an ongoing battle for perception around here. I agree that it's best confronted with correcting misperception and an occasion tour, not outright boosterism. Maybe 2 or 3 cranes against the skyline at the sametime might show people from afar that things are happening downtown and in other nabes.

My friend works for a non-profit that works at getting people to live in Baltimore proper. They lost people but all of their demographics shot up such as average income and education level.
