Well last night i was hanging recessed lighting cans and ceiling electrical boxes. I have completely gutted the part of the kitchen in the original part ofthe house. Electrical is almost done, insulation is in. Drywall is in the garage waiting to be put up. 80% of the cabinets and a new cooktop are in the basement, I already have taken out a large window and put a garden window where the sink is going to be moved to. There are some pics at www.thisolderedhouse.blogspot.com I tried to post more pics last night but firefox kept crashing so I went to bed. Check out the link to my buddy's renovation of his Baltimore Row house. He used contractors.Wimp.

Anybody else besides me having a really difficult time getting work done today? I have no deadlines and I am a bit sleep deprived from working on remodelling my kitchen. So making myself be productive seems to be a losing battle today. All that I can think about is getting out of here for the long weekend. Damn you Urban Ohio and the internet!
  5. And that scares MMPI... Look to me, the recent actions by MMPI are a win-win for them, they are covered if it fails (held hostage by land owners, crumbling facilities) and they look like heroes if the work through the adversity and get this MM/CC off the ground and running.

Ive always been that way. I had to share a bathroom with a disgustingly sloppy brother. That scared me for life. I also hate to see people come into a home without taking off their shoes. That will make me bitch slap you quicker than a NY minute! In addition, I don't like things out of place, closets should be organized; I hate seeing dishes in the sink for a long period of time; unmade beds; Glasses on a table without a coaster; a unorganized fridge. eww. You forgot the fringe on a rug not all facing the same way... Supposedly the host of "Double Dare" was so OCD ( at his worst) he would spend the day combing the fringe on the rug because it kept getting moved out of place.

I actually need to go and get plates for my new car. Good to know I have options. I may just get the OU plates..
  8. It appears that a key point in this whole debacle is the different standards that public and private buildings are held to. The city had a lot less liability risk than what MMPI will have operating this building. MMPI I am guessing has had little experience operating a public building and were shocked with what they found, somebody correct me if I am wrong on that one though. My first thought when I saw these pictures was I saw things ten times worse at my highschool, which was piecemeal building added on willy nilly (1919, WPA, additions in the 60s and 70s, finally closed this year). But that was a public building too, so it was maintained with a "just enough" mentality too. That being said I still think MMPI is over acting on this. Although the stone facade having to be rehung would be a major deal. HMMM the Public Hall Casino, has a nice ring doesn't it? JK!

Come on MTS take the PR position for the good of the city! Edit: BTW I should change my pet peeve from not getting an interview to not knowing that a posted position really is not open, but rather a place holder for somebody who is all but hired. I found out that was what happened by a contact at that company.

When I worked on the 50th floor of key tower the falcons used to land on the ledges outside of the windows fairly regularly. Close enough to get a good look at thier beaks and claws. I wouldn't want to be on the recieving end, it looked like they could tear you to shreds. I didn't know they had names. I may be fabricating memories but didn't there used to be a webcam pointed at the falcons roost on Terminal Tower? Too bad. Goodbye Buckeye. Edit: the article had a link to the falcon cam. www.falconcam-cmnh.org
  11. Well I guess I'll be the one to post this. They have a slide show of the "condemming photos". I see an old building and about a million dollars in copper scrap....I see no smoking gun... MMPI says studies reveal dozens of electrical, other issues inside Public Auditorium By Laura Johnston, The Plain Dealer November 24, 2009, 6:17AM View full sizeLisa DeJong, Plain Dealer fileWhen Public Auditorium was gleaming brand new, it was the biggest convention hall in the country. But years of neglect have created problems inside the hall. CLEVELAND, Ohio — Back when Cleveland was the fifth-biggest city in the nation, Public Auditorium was gleaming brand new, the biggest convention hall in the country. It would welcome the Republican National Convention twice, and host decades of concerts, including the Beatles in 1964. But according to the developers of a downtown medical mart and convention center, the stately edifice hasn't been upgraded much since then... 12. I recently had a meeting at that Marriot and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. I had heard that they had dumped a ton of money into it and it shows. :( no meals at AMP 150 though, sandwiches for lunch :(
  13. Not sure where to put this but here is a well done rennovation/reuse of a church for offices for sale in Lakewood. A cool $2.9M and all 23,000 sqft could be yours...Yes I know the flyer is "Cheese-tastic!" http://www.loopnet.com/Attachments/8/F/D/8FD274C3-8A13-4833-84F1-8C05B48CCA97.pdf The story is this used to house the headquarters of a plastic scrap trader/commidity dealers. They were making money hand over fist selling scrap to China. Then the bottom fell out in 2008.

thats the fun part. just seeing their little faces. Now the three oldest only ask for cash, clothes and other teen hipster gadgets. The younger two still like stuff. The only specific things they ask for are cavs and indians tickets and my youngest nephew is still campaigning for a dog. A dog? I've got two. Take your pick! Pick either one and you are getting the second one thrown in for free!

I dialed up Gnarls Barkley after hearing "Crazy" on the JCU radio station on the way into work this morning. I always loved the video for that with the moving ink blots. As soon as I hear the song the video starts running in my head.

Yeah that will be a sad day when my kids would rather sleep in on Christmas Day. I do all sorts of things to mess with them, like sooty boot prints, etc. throwing half eaten carrots that were left out for the reindeer in the yard. My roof is too steep to go out on and put fake sleigh tracks in the snow though...

AJ, way to pull Hanukkah Harry out.. Here have some socks... MTS you are welcome to come over and partake in the blizzard of wrapping paper flying that is Christmas Morning at my house with my three boys. But no jumping on my bed.

  20. From the looks of the mall C building drawing. The new building would actually rest on a new foundation where the loading docks and viewing pation are now. It doesn't appear that it would be on the "bathtub" of the exhibit hall...

RnR, I understand your point. I guess that we really have two levels of state schools in Ohio. One's that are considered nationally and sort of a second tier that exists in the education production realm. Neither level is a Harvard or Yale but if you plan on going to Grad school, you can still excel at the upper state schools and get into a very good grad program. It's a tough call either way. Lost of $$$$ at stake I wish that my parents had stressed further education. The dealings I have at work really have opened my eyes on how the world works. I keep meaning to go back, but I can barely function as I am now. I can't imagine school on top of this...

RnR, I understand your point but I think that it can be ok in some instances. My parents paid for undergrad but they had a lot of conditions on it. First was you will get a degree that you can get a decent job with, second was they would only pay for state tution (which was a lot more affordible at the time) anything over that was my dime. I had to pay for living expenses with money that I saved up during breaks and from working at school. I know I had a good deal and I could have chosen a more expensive school but I weighed my options and it just looked better at a state school. I will probably do the same for my kids, if I can afford it. BTW the biggest mistake I see is people taking out huge loans to go to small private schools for a BA or BS, save on the undergrad, do well and get into a first rate Grad/Profeesional School. You can get a return on a Grad degree, BAs and BSs not so much. Edit: Rich that was an awesome post!

C-dawg how old are you? I was the last of tution increase cap classes at ohio state schools. I know tution basically doubled from the time that I started in 1997 to when my brother started in 2002. i think hios freshman class had a 15% increase there first year.

Ideally I was trying to put away 20% (including 401k match) of my gross salary and I did manage that for a few years, but right now it is more like 10% since we had the 3rd kid and are trying to finish the house and rennovate our double. I am just thankful that the house I bought in early 2005 has appreciated, so I have gained some equity in that. A lot of it is sweat equity. But I'll take it. All this when my career is kind of in a holding pattern.... SHS you will be fine.
