Yeah, but I think the discrimination in Appalachia started way before that towards anyone who was not Euro.

As well read as I am, I had never heard the term until about 3 years ago when my uncle mentioned it. Family lore had held that we were native American - enough that I, myself am supposedly 1/8 Tsalagi. The most easily accessed research on this suggested that melungeon was a person who was a mix of native American and Scots-Irish/German/etc. They were also called Black Irish or Black Dutch as if some latent genetic component for dark skin had made itself evident. My understanding is that the reasons for this were land claims and avoidance of NA relocation. All that history aside there was a fascinating thing that my uncle used to substantiate his claim. Mind you he is highly intelligent, scholarly but is prone to some odd supporting evidence at times...I think sometimes just for his own amusement while coming across as completely serious. He pointed out that he, my father (his brother) and I all had a notch at the back of our heads at the base of our skull. My wife and mother who were present did not, nor did my aunt. It's still amusing to this day to ask people to feel the back of their head then mine when the subject comes up. Damn....I've heard "moolin-john" or "moolie" before but mostly from Italians. I always thought it was their slang for blacks. That's what I thought too but I always thought it was a play on "mulato".

Unknown callers
Someone once said and I have held it as my phone mantra for anything non-work related: "My phone is there for my convenience, not the caller's."

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
^Yep. As someone who remembers a couple iterations of this streetscape, the newest is hard to get used to - in a very good way. While the aesthetics are completely meh, it sure has the feel of an urban setting now.

This idea just smells dumb. There, I said it. Spidey senses.

Yep. Noticed that too. I use a script blocker so I don't get alot of the garbage but I assume that is done for addition page views/banner ad displays.

I do feel like they've had some incrementally better content since the change. Call me crazy.

Not to be a contrarian but I've been posting pics of my newborn so aunts and uncles can see. I suppose everybody else is seeing them...is it that annoying?

Didn't know this thread existed but I guess I should let everyone know that as of the end of September there is a new little Rabbit Hasher. That makes three in the clan now. Sleepless nights.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
Do the right thing, Mr. Brown. So is this the only block that will be developed in this phase? Or will they also begin work on the blocks immediately to both the south and the west?

Good stuff on the w***** thing. (See I can't even type it without white guilt.) Having gone to one of the uppity high schools in Cincy's northern 'burbs during the times you mention, your recollection is amusing for its accuracy and nostalgia. I played sports in HS so I really didn't have any interest in identifying too strongly with either side. But I will confess to sporting a mullet one year and replacing it with a fade the next. So sue me. White guys can channel their inner Kid N Play or Big Daddy Kane.

Blows me away that the residential component isn't a bunny. I thought demand was brisk?

Blog: I think the point could have been made without potentially alienating the suburban crowd with insults. There are plenty of suburbanites that fancy themselves urbanists, enjoy the city quite a bit, vocally support the project and realize the critical importance of a vital core. Alicia Bridges? Cincinnati: Evolution and Changing Perceptions of Urban Neighborhoods
Just to add my .02. The trappings of family life find me firmly entrenched in a suburban lifestyle. But taking the wife and the kids in the hulk wagon down to WashPark, FS or the Banks is quickly becoming a pastime. My boys love the city just like their dad did when he was that age. I got a chuckle out of my 7 year old asking about the age of the buildings...Music Hall in particular and then asking how old our house in the 'burbs is. OTR was beautiful this past Saturday as we spent most of the afternoon in WP. OTR still has a ways to go as evidenced in at least on comment on my FB page in response to my posting a pic of my kids in WP. But I sure love the vibe.

Cincinnati/NKY International Airport
DHL using CVG has to do more with location for long international legs. Here is a good example, http://flightaware.com/live/flight/PAC242 Polar does a lot of contract flying for DHL. Could the 12k ft. runway have something to do with it? Do any other regional airports have this feature?

Yep. I've wasted hours going through that archive for CM. Half of the fun for me is the advertising artifacts of companies gone away. Different branding the city has gone through: Blue Chip City, etc. There are a couple good issues about downtown development efforts that can really take you back. IIRC, one actually details the development details of the Westin parcels. Here is an article search from 2000 that talks about what used to be around FS. Obviously with August being "dog days". The "aug" short for August is the rest, I guess. Oh and the "d'" just gives it that foreign schtick. Whatevs.
