Cincinnati: Historic Photos
From L-R: The Sheraton, ???, ???, The RKO Albee, ???. Feel free to fill in the blanks. Oh, to have that collection of buildings along 5th at FS again. Instead we have the Westin. Why would you have ever demolished that Sheraton?!?! BTW, this flickr feed has dozens of great FS historicals by Tim Hubbard.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Fort Washington Way Cap
While I have no inside knowledge of this part of the FWW project - I did manage a project at the eastern end - the manner in which it is deteriorating has the hallmarks of improper or negligent soil compaction during backfill. And Sherman is right that there should be some sort of significant top layer for the pavers. Jake may know but I would think it was a combination of both. It really shouldn't matter as long as it is backfilled and compacted properly.

They seemingly shouldn't have been, pavers are difficult to do right in general, but UC has pulled it off all over their campus. I wonder why they haven't created a lawsuit, they are absolutely terrible and have settled a good 8 inches in some spots. Someone goofed up either designing or building them. Lawsuit waiting to happen. I'd say the goof is in building. Poor compaction of base.

524 and 526. Not bad. Upper deck but behind HP. I had better for the unnecessary LCS in '10.

Just do all of the sidewalk expansion on the FWW sides of 2nd and 3rd. The sidewalks and pedestrian areas that abut FWW will have to be completely rebuilt anyway. They are in deplorable condition and I'm surprised they don't create an exposure for the city.

And just to clarify, I mean water features at each END of the entire area - not each cap.

Ever wonder what the south side of FS looked like before the Westin? This is form the same collection as the post above. 1975.

Just to throw it out there again. Kenton county has a great collection (albeit of NoKY) pics. You should check out some of the highway construction pics. Here's an oldie of the area between the cut and Spence.

Part and parcel: I would think active water features (if technically possible) would be a great idea for the "ends" of the caps. 1. They would provide visual interest. 2. They would buffer some of the highway noise that will flow out of the end of the tunnels. This would accomplish the goal - I suspect many will have - of incorporating some public space. I would agree that making the rest suitable development (comm, res, retail) is best. Thoughts?

Cincinnati: Pendleton: Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati
I hear what you are saying (and tend to agree) but even on a visit to LV one will venture throughout the city to experience other attractions. At least that's my experience...I usually drive the 30 or so miles to visit Hoover or Red Rocks every time I am there. The arching question being: Is the casino the primary driver for a visit by a Louisvillian, Daytonian, Lexingtonian, etc. Most often not, I presume. It will become a facet of in/out of town bachelor/ette and adult weekends. Way upthread I observed that it's probably fortuitous that the site is where it is because it will require visitors to traverse most/all of CBD in order to visit the attractions at the other end of the Casino-Banks bookends...its planning/design swing-and-miss notwithstanding.

Striking. Really! The vintage pic looks like an old west town. And the new one looks like a rain forest.

Went past yesterday and while I don't have the analytic architectural chops you guys do, I can also rate it an 8 on WTF were they thinking scale.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Amazing that there won't be a Brent Spence Bridge Preparation/West End Cleanup Project Fee on the bill though. http://www.duke-energy.com/westend/westend-faqs.asp Quoting: How much will the cleanup project cost, and will gas or electric rates be affected? The costs associated with the cleanup at West End are currently being estimated. Gas rates may be affected, but electric rates will not. Duke Energy has received permission from the Ohio Public Service Commission to request reimbursement of cleanup costs in a future rate case. The PUCO will determine the validity and prudence of the request, any amount of recovery and the length of time for recovery. Initial estimates for the cleanup are in the $34 million range. One of the things that stands out to me: In seemingly most photos before say...1920, it seems like the hillsides are all denuded. Nothing like our present day densely wooded hillsides. Anybody else see this?

Landing at CVG
I think it is a geo-cultural blind spot for East and West Coasters. Cincinnati, while well south, does have the surname "Ohio"...it's associated with a different part of the country than KY. So when they realize they are in KY, there's some dissonance as to where they are in the country. Maybe? Could be they are just surprised Kentuckians can land one 'o dem dar big jayuts.

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
Yep...assured of at least a split and then home against the Cards... PIT seems to have hit the wall with a sweep by the Dads. .500 ball the rest of the way wins us the Central, I say. BUT, as unusualfire said, wouldn't it be great to see the Redlegs win 100?! 76 wins with 37 left to play. To reach 100 we must go: 24W-13L That's .648! Well over the .608 pace for the season but a small sample. One game here or there decides it. Let's start with a win to close out Philly tonight!

The view up Vine taken (presumably) from the Carew makes my mouth water. Same with the one "looking up at Mt. Adams" from what I guess would have been Bucktown. Unbelievable what we have demolished.

I'm all for diversity in the retail and, after all, this adds diversity. The "prayer request" box on their website landing page should clear up any further confusion on the spiritual question.
