Waukegan, Illinois
My older brother lives just outside of Waukegan. Waukegan and North Chicago have always reminded me of the Lorain/Elyria area as satellite cities that've become more connected to the primary city in a much larger metro. They definitely are their own areas with their own cultures.

I don’t know but the city of Youngstown is smaller than Canton and may be smaller than Lorain now.

It’s added Youngstown AND Mansfield according to this website. How accurate is it that this will be a new CSA? If so it’s an even more insane area, stretching east to west from Pennsylvania to Sandusky.

The interesting thing concerning Cleveland(and maybe other cities on this list) is that there is another Urban Area(Lorain/Elyria) within it's MSA and part of it's Urban area is actually within Akron's MSA and outside of it's MSA population. This is the case for Akron's urban area as well it spills into both Cleveland and Canton's MSA.

I felt like the video showed the absurdity of MSA's, let alone CSA's. Outside of the really BIG cities of this country with extensive commuter rail, I don't see how Holmes County or Shelby County(amongst others) should ever be considered a part of Cleveland or Cincinnati's metro areas. Using his logic, you might as well just have all of NEO be a combined metro area.

Cleveland & Akron Inter-City Relations
It was fascinating to go back and read through this thread 10-plus years later. I feel personally more connected to both Cleveland and Canton for several reasons than I did when this thread popped off. I know my family and I have been more intentional about exploring and enjoying what the whole area has to offer, in the same way I did when living in Chicagoland. When talking about distance traveled we can get to most Cleveland area attractions in 40 minutes or less, which in the grand scheme of things is very little time. It will be interesting to see if any of the proposed mergers happen or if the area remains separate MSAs.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
I came across this website with demographic/population data from the 2020 census. It includes data for State/County/City/Township/MSA/CSA etc. I thought it may be of interest, enjoy. https://data.burlingtonfreepress.com/census/total-population/total-population-change/ohio/040-39/

Cleveland: Population Trends
Or possibly becuase the Akron MSA would be bringing 2 large state universities and at least 2 Fortune 500 companies to the table. However I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not.

Cleveland: Population Trends
Cleveland and Akron were combined at one point but I don't think Canton was ever a part of that MSA.

Cleveland: Population Trends
I can't find anything online that points to Akron being dropped from Cleveland's MSA in 2003. What I did find is they were a CSA that did not include Canton(Stark) and some of the outlying counties until 2012. https://www2.census.gov/geo/maps/econ/ec2012/csa/EC2012_330M200US184M.pdf

Cleveland: Population Trends
The Big difference is that Akron and Canton have 1. Always been aligned more from a cutural stand point and 2. See each other as peers. People in Akron don't see Canton as being suburb or little brother. On this very thread (and on other websites) I've seen Cleveland boosters compare Akron to cities like Lorain, Elyria, Painsville and Chagrin Falls. Now these comparisons may be antecdotal but I would guess that most in Cleveland would look at Akron as a suburb. Ultimately I'm rooting for Cleveland as it's a great city, I just think it is and can be great without ignoring Akron's own independence and trying to adopt it as a suburb.

Cleveland: Population Trends
Thank you, I wasn't going to get into an argument over it but watching folks casually include Akron's MSA within "Metro Cleveland" because 3(not even large) suburbs in Summit County are more closely aligned with Cleveland is always funny. Maybe sometime in near future it will happen but as of now it's not the case.

Cleveland: Population Trends
Have they ever been a part of the MSA? When were they removed from the MSA?

Cleveland: Population Trends
Have Summit and Portage County been added to Cleveland's Metro?

That was my understanding as well , I wish I could remember where it was said but they were pretty dogmatic there was more to it than the definition. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
