Former Greek Orthodox church who sold their property to built a new church in the middle of a cornfield on the outskirts of town. Sold to a real estate developer for penthouse / lots. Project known as The Gallery. Seems like the Studio isn't coming down afterall this year, even though the city has acquired the title. Sounds like there was an issue with the lowest bid, and the city opted not to let them rebid. The other building is still coming down, but in addition, the city is working to acquire the single story building attached to it (River of Life Apostolic Ministries) and will tear them down together. There aren't funds to cover the Studio, so it is on hold until 2010 if and when additional NSP funds are available. I had heard that demo costs were well over $200k.

And I want to hear what they have to say about it ;)

I cannot speak for the Hungarian or Slavonic population, but I can say that Middletown had/has a significant Greek population, although I believe it is dying off. There is still an active Greek Orthodox congregation, the one your mentioned, in Middletown. Although in a different location. http://saintsconstantineandhelen.com/ When I have more time, I will dig out some information I may have on the Greek community in Middletown. They are most noted by most long-time Middletown residents for operating Elites, which was an ice-cream store and confectionary located in several spots throughout the Middletown community. The former Liberty Restaurant downtown were famous for their Liberty Dogs, was owned by Greeks.

The city released conceptual plans late summer developed by Woolpert for downtown redevelopment. I hadn't paid all that close attention to the plans but more recently when I looked at them, I noticed a little green square in what looked to be the location of these two buildings. Green=Green space. The taller building needs to go. It was damaged by fire and is a hazard. I wish the old theater could be saved.

UGH. This is not what I wanted to see. But i saw the reports yesterday. I had such big dreams of this place; but such a small wallet to see them actually happen.

I have three grandparents buried there. My mom is buried there. My dad has a spot with his name on it waiting for him. It will likely be my final resting place as well. Now there's a depressing thought.

It's a quiet college town. Been there once. Stayed at the Granville Inn. Pretty cool old hotel.

Great views of the city. But I think there's a little bit of Chicago in this thread . .

I am sure the electrical and heating/cooling systems need major overhaul. Plus, it is currently dividend into 17 smaller apartments, most rented to low income tenants. I can only imagine what kind of wear and tear the rest of the house must have. The interior shots are mostly "common" areas.

Original part yes. Early 1900's addition, no. It was designed by a firm in Dayton. Pretzinger Musselman I think.

Because some were franchises, there are a few locations that are still open, but under new names because of the reputation of the founder of La Shish (Isalmic extremist connections). These owners felt the La Shish brand was tarnished because of news reports and opted to operate under a new name. I know the Ann Arbor location is still open under a new name.

LaShish was to Arabic/Lebanese food what Fazoli’s is to Italian food. There are much better places to go in Dearborn. And now that LaShish is closed, hopefully people are discovering them.

I don't understand metro Detroit's lover affair with Buddy's Pizza. It's "ok" pizza. But I'd take a Casanno's, Marions or LaRosa's any day.
