Oh, one more thing. I think the town immediately across 41, now known as Laurium used to be called Calumet. Back when Calumet was Red Jacket. Then Calumet changed their name to "Laurium" and Red Jacket changed their name to "Calumet". They are basically the same town and you can't tell when you move from one town to another.

Michigan House is probably my favorite restaurant in the Houghton/Hancock/Calumet area. I have heard that Calumet was actually in the running for Michigan State capitol at one time. Thanks for the pics!

Well, I've been to both Miami and Ohio, and I like Miami a lot more. I love the type and consistency in the architecture, the spread out campus, the landscape and man, no contest on where to watch a football game! Yeager is WAY better than Peden....I don't care how old Peden is. I do have to say that the commercial district of Athens appears more lively than Oxford, though I have only made trips there for Akron FB games.

Great Pics! I went on that mine tour a few winters ago and it is amazing. They show you one of the slopes they would mine and it goes down a long, long, long way. We didn't get to ride on the tram however. We had to walk through the snow. I'll try to take some pics this winter, they get an amazing amount of snow up there!

Great pics...don't recognize it without snow. I spend my winters there now. Got some shots of the Ambassador (Great pizza), "The Library" restaurant...one of the best places in town to grab dinner and Cyberia coffee. I get to look out my hotel room every day and see Quincy Smelter. There is a group trying to save the place, but I bet it has TONS of nasty chemicals leeched into the ground on the site.

Best campus in the MAC, no doubt...nobody even comes close. Buisness school looks beautiful! I always enjoy traveling there for a game vs. the Zips, very nice environment to watch a football game in the fall.

Good pictures of Marquette. I spent 6 winters there for work and one of the coolest things they do is a dogsled race. They close the main street in town and bring in about 4 ft. of snow. Everyone comes out to watch the dogs and it is a great atmosphere! All kinds of dogs, beagles, Golden Retrievers, etc. Great place to Sled (Snowmobile) and the skiing isn't bad either. The Superior dome at NMU is also amazing. It is a domed stadium (well, small stadium) and it is entirely made of wood with the exception of the joints. Great town. I spend quite a bit of time in Houghton as well now in the winters. The history of the UP is amazing. The country's first mineral rush was to the UP...Copper and Iron. Architecture is unique with the red stone they have up there too! Calumet is another amazing town old mining town. The downtown is very, very big for the size of the city. It was a boomtown when it was profitable to mine copper there. Thanks for the pics!

Thanks for the pics. Lived in Fenton and Linden for a while and used to go to Flint all the time. Graduated from Kettering too! You really did put some lipstick on it that's for sure. It never looked like that to me! Good job!

Wow, way to kick a man when he is down. I don't know what it is with OSU fans and their year round fixation with Michigan, anything related to Michigan! It's months until the football game for crying out loud! As a former resident of Michigan, I personally don't think this is funny. The state has been devistated, DEVISTATED, by this recession and not only do I have a lot of friends who have felt the pain, I have too. All I have to say is that being born and raised in Ohio, and then moving to Michigan for about a decade, the State is amazing. We now live back in Ohio and I travel several times a year to Michigan. If you haven't had a chance to explore the state, please do, you won't be sorry. Don't be like so many of my Ohio friends who miss out on amazing experiences because of a football rivalry! Oh, BTW, I'm a Zip fan in case you were wondering.
  10. Although I see your point, and I sort of agree with you, I want to be sure we're all on the same page. UA is city campus, but it's not like CSU. From your other posts, it seems you're referring to the use of eminent domain, which is a whole different story. But a lot of people still have the idea that Akron uses the city as it's 'campus'. When in reality all the streets have been closed off through the main campus area. Of course there are still areas in the campus foot print that have streets, but this is no Cleveland State(nothing against CSU). It's closer to a Toledo sort of vibe, but unlike Toledo, 'campus' as we know it is still expanding. Akron is a sleeping giant. And it's growing every year(in acres and in enrollment). The future is bright. I agree. Just like many look at the chapel as being the UA church yet its not. Its basically on campus but not associated with the University. I like how the campus is becoming. I attended Malone in Canton and I never felt like I was on a college campus. When I transferred to Cincinnati Christian University I felt the same. Had a great view of cincinnati but lacked the campus feel. I attend Cinti state right now and it is truely a campus. Akron now has a campus feel but 10 years back it didn't. EJ thomas hall and the goodyear building kind of bring downtown onto campus slighty. Soon downtown Akron will be fit to gain off of more students living on campus. There's a need for a dave and busters type of facility downtown and I'm sure it would flourish..(JMO) Trust me, the UA campus 10 years ago was COMPLETELY different than it is today. It might as well have been 100 years ago. Personally, I think the stadium should be thrown up next to the existing JAR in an effort to keep the athletic facilities close together. I also think LBJ would support an arena in Akron and would likely want it in downtown, not on the UA campus. If a new arena is to be built, UA does not need City cooperation to get it done, though throwing LBJ in the mix could make it interesting. Though I enjoy the thought of a new arena, it is not needed at this point in time. We need to sell out the JAR first on a consistent basis. As for the topic of what defines campus, I do believe there is an actual designation of what is "On Campus" as UA has its own Police Dept. and is responsible for what goes on "On Campus". I don't know the exact boundaries, but this is probably your best bet for defining campus. There are also a lot of hard feelings about campus expansion. UA is landlocked when it comes to undeveloped land surrounding campus and it has probably been this way for over a century. From my point of view, UA has two choices, it can expand or it can keep the existing footprint and die. Campus was VERY cramped when I was in school and the only way to go was UP. Most students aren't looking college defined by concrete high rise buildings. UA is actively expanding and doing it in many ways. I believe the Polsky building was given to UA and that got the foot in the door to downtown. UA needed quick dorm space for both the increasing student population and the dorms to be demolished for the Stadium construction. This led it to purchase Quaker Square. The stadium required eminent domain to get done, which I have mixed feelings about. In the end, I believe that UA is the single biggest asset the City of Akron has right now and though the expansion is painful, it is necessary to grow the University and the Region.
  11. My favorite house ever in my favorite style, tudor revival. My wife an I often talk that if we had tons of money, we would build a tudor home. I also believe the Seiberlings owned much of the land that is now the Cuyahoga National Recreation Area. There are also many impressive homes in the Tudor Revival style on the way to Stan Hywet. Yet another reason to love Akron.
  12. It seems to me there is a bit of an athletic arms race going on in the MAC right now. This type of facility is going to be par for the course here in a few years. Just off the top of my head, quite a few MAC schools have done some significant upgrades. Miami seemed to start it off with the Cradle of Coaches plaza, the upgraded scoreboard and an entirely new visitors side of their stadium. I think they have a fieldhouse in the works too. I know that Ball State, NIU, and Kent have recently made upgrades. Both CMU and WMU have very nice stadiums. Akron has been leading the charge recently with a new practice fields, a new field house (very similar to Toledo, maybe a bit better), new softball field, upgraded track and field facilities and an entirely new football stadium. There are also rumors of a new soccer stadium and also a new BB arena in Akron too. If the MAC schools want to compete in DI-A, they are going to need to have top facilities.
  13. I don't understand why there is a push to eliminate open enrollment at UA. I totally understand that the rankings suffer, but there is something that is lost when you only let the most educated young people into your school. For me, back when I was at UA, it was the non-traditional student that brought so much to the classroom. One of my good friends was a Diesel mechanic for 15-20 years before getting hurt and deciding to go to college. He didn't have good grades in high school and really struggled early on. My buddies and I worked with him and in return, boy did he show us a thing or two about engines, cars, and building things in general. At that time, UA had 4 SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) competition teams. We built and competed against almost every major engineering school across the country and a few from across the pond. They had a Formula Style Race car, a Supermileage car, a Baja Car, and an Airplane competition. My Senior year Akron Engineers won 3 of those 4 competitions and my buddy was a key player in two of those championships. That same year I looked at a ranking of the top engineering schools in the country and Akron wasn't even mentioned. I really don't care what a magazine ranking says about UA, the companies hiring the students know who is turning out a good product and at least in the Engineering community, UA's stock is on the rise.

So, I must be really bad at searching for things on the internet because in the 150 times I've looked for historic pictures of Akron, I've never found this site. Thank You!

You did do a great job with Akron and had you not told me it was Can't, I would have thought it was a town with a lot of potential. But knowing it was Can't, well, that was it.... It's just I'm a Zips fan and I have to do this....there is no other way.... For those of you who don't understand the UA - Can't thing, let me put it to you this way. True Akron and Can't fans consider this rivalry bigger than the OSU - Michigan rivalry, and it's nasty. For example, for the past two season's during the Akron - Can't BB games, there have been punches thrown on the court. Kent's stadium was vandalized last year before they had even completed rennovations. It's actually getting a bit too out of hand and the school officials are starting to ask everyone to take it easy.

Agreed. I think Akron is poised for growth. Keeping Goodyear and Bridgestone in place was a HUGE win. Now, lets hope the University Park inititative starts to bear some real fruit!

As an Akron fan, I have nothing more to say than... Kent, ugh! Akron Zips...home of the Wagon Wheel and 2009 MAC BB Champions!

It would have been great to walk down Howard street back in the day. Today, the only indication of it's existance is the oddly shaped back of the First National Bank tower.
  19. Man, there is construction going on all over town!
  20. Actually, I think it is the next set of tracks North. Looks like it will be nice, but honestly, I rarely ever make it down there. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Akron,+Ohio+Howard+and+North+Street&sll=41.090826,-81.516323&sspn=0.002248,0.004603&ie=UTF8&ll=41.090838,-81.516645&spn=0.002345,0.004603&t=h&z=18&iwloc=A
  21. Great Pics. I went to the Spring Game a few weekends back and they had tours of the stadium. It is going to be, without a doubt, the best stadium in the MAC. Our tour guide said UA also thinks it will be as good, if not better than stadiums in CUSA. Here are some of the additional things I picked up on: 1) He said they were shooting for a very LOUD stadium. To achieve this, he said that the slope on the stands is steeper than most stadiums. He also pointed out that they intentionally wanted an upper deck and a large press tower to drive the noise towards the field. He also said that this is why they went with metal seating, but I have to believe that was probably driven by cost. 2) He said there would be a ribbon board on part of the East front upper deck. This would be expanded if additional money comes our way. I can't think of any College Stadium that has one of these. 3) The scoreboard resolution won't be as good as what it is at the Q. It will be close, but not as good. 4) He said they have locker room facilities for back to back games. They intend to have high school games there so I imagine that each team can get a locker room and they can have a couple of games a day. 5) The upper deck of the endzone facility are lounges for the Baseball team, the Softball team, the Soccer team and the track team. 6) They wanted the fans to be very close to the action and I"ll tell you what, it looks like you will be. 7) The lights on the West side will be on top of the press tower. The lights on the East side will be at the ends of the grandstand with one in the middle. The lighting will meet the requirements for TV for an NCAA National Championship Broadcast. 8 ) They have much more restroom space than what is required for a stadium of that size. Big improvement over the RB and without a doubt better than the port-o-potties they have at the Horseshoe. Can't wait! I have never been to a sellout game in Akron. We came close a few times, but never a sellout. I think we will have 3 this year. Opener agains Morgan State, the following week against Indiana, and against Kent State.
  22. I drove down Euclid ave. last Saturday after the Men's MAC Championship game and it looks amazing at night. They did a wonderful job! I didn't have my camera on me, but it really looked good.
  23. I'm sure you can buy a primo spot next to the fieldhouse which is immediately next to the stadium. Rumor has it that Lee Jackson field will be open for tailgating too (Bad idea IMO) but if you get there late, you will be in a parking deck. I'm tailgating in the Schrank South lot and I'll be there at the crack of dawn to get my spot too! As for alcohol, my understanding is that UA will NOT be banning open containers from the parking lots so... :drunk:
  24. The Skyway is being built immediately next to my old Apt. building. Too bad all that was there back then was a subway. I can't say I'll be going there on game days though.....I'll be cooking some of my own food within sight of ICS.

You caught me! Well, I am thinking about transferring, but I am probably just going to stay at Kent. All I can say is find the right school for you, it makes all the difference.
