:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D Group Buys Capitol Music Hall By JOHN McCABE And HEATHER ZIEGLER Staff Writers WHEELING - The Capitol Music Hall's purchase by the Wheeling Convention and Visitor's Bureau creates a "critical mass of entertainment facilities" in Wheeling, WesBanco Arena General Manager Dennis Magruder believes. The venue also will be a "new music hall, not the music hall of yesterday," Magruder added during this morning's official announcement of the Capitol's purchase. The Wheeling CVB paid $615,000 for the structure, using revenue generated through Ohio County's hotel/motel tax. Magruder, who will be overseeing the Capitol as part of his duties at WesBanco Arena, said he plans to work with local groups that operate similar venues to ensure the area maximizes its entertainment lineup. "We will work with Ohio County Schools as they work to build the new performing arts center; we will work with Earl Brown at the Victoria and the folks at Wheeling Island," Magruder said. "And to the Wheeling Symphony I say this: welcome home."

Bids Sought For The ‘Green Door’ By CASEY JUNKINS WHEELING - A Center Wheeling building once home to the brothel known as the "Green Door" may soon house another business - thanks to the city's development committee. During a Friday meeting, committee members Mayor Andy McKenzie, Vice Mayor Eugene Fahey and Councilwoman Gloria Delbrugge unanimously approved publishing requests for proposals for the city-owned property at the 2124 Main St. In 2006, Wheeling police raided the building they said had served as a house of prostitution for several years. City Council then declared the building a public nuisance before assuming ownership of the structure.

Clator Hotel Idea Doesn’t Check Out By CASEY JUNKINS WHEELING - City Operations Supervisor Tim Birch wants to know where City Council will headquarter his department if members decide to sell the Clator Operations Center to a hotel developer. And a 79-year resident of Hunter Avenue wants any potential developer to respect and consult with those who live near the property that has served as Wheeling's Operations Center since May 27, 1975. During its Tuesday meeting, council approved a resolution authorizing City Manager Robert Herron to request and receive development proposals for the 9 acres of city-owned property by a vote of 6-1, with Councilman James Tiu opposing the resolution. Voting in favor of the measure were Mayor Andy McKenzie, Vice Mayor Eugene Fahey, Councilmen Don Atkinson, Robert "Herk" Henry and Vernon Seals and Councilwoman Gloria Delbrugge. 2008: CAPITOL MUSIC HALL Downtown Still Waits For the Development By CASEY JUNKINS WHEELING - As 2008 began, City Manager Robert Herron and former Mayor Nick Sparachane said they had an aggressive plan to re-open the Capitol Music Hall and revitalize downtown Wheeling. As the year comes to a close, Herron and current Mayor Andy McKenzie are still trying to implement the changes they believe will lead to a rebirth of the city's downtown business district. The downtown, overall, continues to deteriorate. A recent walk on Main and Market streets revealed more than 40 unoccupied store fronts. The Capitol Music Hall, downtown's most marketable attraction, also remains closed. The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission analyzed more than 14,000 samples taken between Pittsburgh and Cairo, Ill., and found high fecal counts following heavy rains along almost half of the 981-mile river. Ohio: Recycling News & Info
Recently, WJU had a forum on campus which was attended by the mayor and other movers and shakers in the city of Wheeling. You can read more about it in the Wheeling Developments Thread. Anywho, one of the points a student brought up was that the city needs to do a better job of being green. Mayor McKenzie acknowledged this, but also stated that the costs would be simply too high - at least with respect to building a recycling facility. The volume of recyclables needed to break even far outweighs Wheeling's output. It was at this point that I had an idea: Would it not be possible for the Steubenville-Weirton and Wheeling MSAs to build a recycling facility (located in Wheeling, of course) to handle the recyclables of the whole valley? I know it's basically conjecture, but I was wondering if there was any precedent for this. Perhaps those here better versed in urban issues can help out.

Marion Mayhem/Miami Valley Siverbacks discussion
The CIFL has posted its schedule at www.continentalindoorfootball.com. Marion will be back, but the Miami Valley Silverbacks are sitting out the year (and I suspect they will eventually fold ). I have yet to make it to a Mayhem game, but I imagine the atmosphere is pretty cool.

Arts Center Funding Reaches 80 Percent $2 million still needed for project By SHELLEY HANSON WHEELING - Eighty percent of the funding needed to construct a $10 million performing arts center at Wheeling Park High School is in place. Lawrence Miller, Ohio County Schools superintendent, told board members Monday that in addition to the $5 million being provided by the West Virginia School Building Authority, $3,036,540 has been raised since October. "We currently have 15 major sponsors who have contributed $10,000 or more. Those contributions vary from $10,000 to $1 million," Miller noted. "We have others that have indicated that they are going to participate, but until they sign on the dotted line, we do not count them." Centre Market Ideas Shared By JENNIFER COMPSTON-STROUGH WHEELING - City leaders took the first step toward improving Center Wheeling on Monday by gathering with business owners from that area of the city. Councilman Don Atkinson said he and other city officials, including Mayor Andy McKenzie, City Manager Robert Herron, Marketing Director Joelle Ennis and council members Gloria Delbrugge, James Tiu and Robert "Herk" Henry, held the session to open a new dialogue with the business community. A lack of such dialogue is one of the biggest complaints council members hear, Atkinson said. Among the issues discussed Monday were potential changes to parking around Centre Market and throughout Center Wheeling; the possibility of restricting some streets to one-way traffic; improving area sidewalks; and perhaps starting a business facade loan program for businesses in that portion of the city. Such a program already exists in the downtown. But none of those changes will come before council studies their potential impact. Wheeling May Annex Clinton Hills By CASEY JUNKINS Mayor Andy McKenzie says there are neighborhoods adjacent to Wheeling that want to be annexed by the city - and Clinton Hills may be one of those areas. But many residents of the development, located north of Oglebay Park off of W.Va. 88, are not sure they want to pay Wheeling's fire service and sanitation fees or be subject to the city's zoning and building codes. John Billie, president of the Clinton Hills Improvement Association, said some members of the community have expressed an interest in joining the city of Wheeling. WJU Hosts Second Town Hall Meeting By BETHANY A. ROMANEK A love for Centre Market and the local landscape were some of the reasons cited by a few Wheeling Jesuit University students regarding why they decided to receive their education in Wheeling. Nearly 30 WJU students and faculty members gathered at the Ratt inside Swint Hall on Thursday for a town hall-style meeting concerning the city's economic future. The students came out to hear Wheeling Mayor Andy McKenzie speak, as well as answer questions they have about the city.
