Big news at WJU! :-D WJU To Rent The Mount University wants to use space at closed neighbor By BETHANY ROMANEK WHEELING - In what the Rev. Julio Giulietti termed a glorious, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for two groups of people, officials from Wheeling Jesuit University and the Visitation Sisters at Mount de Chantal are in talks regarding the use of the Mount property by the university. With the historic Mount de Chantal building as a backdrop, Giulietti and Sister Joanne Gonter, superior of the Visitation Sisters at Mount de Chantal, made an announcement during a news conference Thursday. Both parties spoke about what will happen to the longtime girls school since it closed its doors in May. Read more at http://www.theintelligencer.net/page/content.detail/id/512124.html

The location outside of the mall will remain open, it's the one inside that is closing. Sucks about the Mall, though. :(

Marion Mayhem/Miami Valley Siverbacks discussion
An update: The Silverbacks finished 3-9 and missed the playoffs, while the Mayhem finished 7-5 and made the playoffs when the then 11-0 Rochester Raiders dropped out of the CIFL/were suspended by the league. With that in mind, Legends fans will have the opportunity to see the Raiders play in the AIFA. Also, a rumor I recently heard is that with the failure of a referendum to allow alcolhol sales at Troy's Hobart Arena, the Silverbacks will be moving to Dayton (I'm sure that means we'll be hearing plenty about the team from our fellow forumites :-))

More at http://theintelligencer.net/page/content.detail/id/510643.html City Has Plan for Plaza By CASEY JUNKINS Installing new sidewalks with metered parking, new brick patios and a new fountain are some of the improvements city officials are looking to make to the Market Street Plaza. Richard Hickman, owner of Hickman’s Gifts and More in the plaza, appreciates the plans but believes the city needs to make sure it has its priorities in order. The plaza — which is officially classified as a municipal park under the auspices of the Wheeling Park Commission — runs along the west side of Market Street between 10th and 11th streets in downtown Wheeling.

...and the Legends record their first win of the year! Unfortunately, they've limped to the finish. If the Legends come back (with money), hopefully they move to the CIFL - a better league. If they don't come back, which seems possible, hopefully the CIFL (which has offices in N. Canton) moves in and establishes a new team in the area. There's two home games left - hopefully some UOers will get out there and show the team some love! http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?ID=413715&Category=17&subCategoryID=0

Wooster / Wayne County: Development and News
Pertinent to developments at the COW, I discovered this when looking at the "Akron - University Park construction." I hope that if anything, the design will maintain the current size of the basketball arena. It seats 3,400 and rocks when Wooster plays Wittenberg or is in the playoffs. And of course, as a minor league sports addict, I'd like to see this with the possibility of pro sports. http://www.osborn-eng.com/sports_wooster_rec.html :-D

Wooster / Wayne County: Development and News
I feel we warrant our own thread... :type: I'll kick it off with a couple of developments, although not entirely recent, are the major projects in downtown and in the areas surrounding downtown! The Beall Avenue Streetscape http://www.woosteroh.com/beallave_streetscape.php Project Goals * Develop a strong linkage between Downtown Wooster, the College of Wooster and the Beall Ave. Commercial District. * Develop a safer and more attractive environment for the area residents, customers in the Commercial District, and students, faculty and staff within the College area. * Provide distinguishable gateways to the College of Wooster. * Enhance the marketability of the Beall Ave. Commercial District to attract new businesses and increase business in the existing establishments. What is Involved? * New curbs, sidewalks and street paving. * Separation of storm and sanitary sewers. * New storm drainage system. * Removal of overhead utility lines and wood poles. * Addition of bicycle lanes. * Safer pedestrian crossings. * Decorative style lights and poles (similar to Liberty St.) * Reduction of curb cuts and driveways, resulting in safer and improved traffic flow. * Landscaped median with controlled crossings in the College area.

Wheeling: Developments and News
Glad to see it is appreciated. I might as well post an update. The Highlands got an Old Navy, and they're still trying to get the amusement park started. I don't go there very often, I still prefer St. Clairsville and the mall. http://www.theintelligencer.net/page/content.detail/id/509300.html And a link to the plan: http://www.theintelligencer.net/pdf/news/509300_1.pdf I'm not sure what to think of it. It seems very gimmicky. A better solution IMO would be to simply renovate the aging buildings in downtown, and doing whatever is possible to bring in mixed-use development. I love downtown Wheeling the way it is, and would like to see it remain so...except more vibrant. I am, however, looking forward to seeing the Symphony at the Capitol. And indoor football is coming back. Woo!

I know one of the buildings was a kite store, and I want to say the other was a natural food store. IIRC, the buildings are being renovated by Washington properties, the group responsible for much of the great work in the above photos.

That's because it was never completed. :) You might find this (http://www.woosterbook.com/additional/glimpseporch.html) interesting. It even has some of the original designs in it, IIRC.

More TIF Info Wanted By CASEY JUNKINS http://www.theintelligencer.net/page/content.detail/id/508732.html?nav=515 WHEELING — “More information required” was not the message City Manager Robert Herron hoped to receive from the West Virginia Development Office concerning the city’s $8 million Tax Increment Financing application. But that is the memo Herron got from state officials last week regarding the plan that would provide $2.5 million for upgrades to the currently closed Capitol Music Hall and $2.5 million to remove slum and blight in the 1100 block of Main and Market streets. As such, current Wheeling leaders will have to wait to see when — or if — they will be making any big announcements concerning their proposed projects. ^ Other than the renovation of the Capital, I'm not a fan of the TIF plan. I'd much rather the buildings be saved! Manchin Sending $1M To Independence Hall Also hints at energy business setting up locally By JOSELYN KING POSTED: April 18, 2008 http://www.theintelligencer.net/page/content.detail/id/508430.html?nav=515 WHEELING — Visiting local counties Thursday, West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin said he is excited for the future of the Northern Panhandle and hinted that an unnamed international energy business could be locating there. He also said he is directing $1 million from the state’s budget for renovations to West Virginia Independence Hall, located on Market Street, with hopes that Wheeling and Ohio County officials additionally will contribute.

Tighe Property Auctioned By BETHANY A. ROMANEK Staff Writer WHEELING — Marked condemned, dangerous and unsafe by the city of Wheeling, the former home of Larry Tighe at 2315 Chapline St. was auctioned to a Virginia couple Saturday. The bidding began at 1 p.m. with a small crowd standing near the front porch of the historic home. The lone bidder — William Armstrong of Manassas, Va. — had mailed a $100 refundable check to local officials before the auction in order to be eligible to bid. On Saturday, he placed a bid of $10,000 for the property. But attorney Gary Sacco, who was appointed by the court as a special commissioner for the sale of the property and acted as auctioneer, said he could not accept that amount, as the property had been appraised at $15,000. Without hesitation, Armstrong bid $15,000. Read more at http://www.theintelligencer.net/page/content.detail/id/508816.html?nav=515

St. Clairsville is nice, but admittedly, I haven't been through it too many times. The closest I get is the mall. :-[
