Amen! Has ODOT ever articulated whether such a plan would work? Despite what traffic engineers think, people are not lemmings. They would find new ways to get to work. The 490 solution/new streetgrid (proposed by KJP years ago) would go a long way to helping heal those neighborhoods.
  2. Amen. That is exactly right. It's a shame that companies fail to see that the culture of the next generation is far different from that of the Baby Boomers.
  3. Well, instead of building a $500 million + convention center that may or may not be successful, the city could always build several parking garages (even at $40 million or so per) and offer free parking. Would the voting public, however, approve such a measure?
  4. Richard Jacobs remains a destructive force to the viability of this region. Thanks, Dick.
  5. We should throw computers and high-tech machines out of our country, too. They're costing Americans jobs!
  6. Great discussion by Ned Hill regarding the future of the District of Design on Smart City Radio: http://www.smartcityradio.com/smartcityradio/coming_up.cfm?showsmartcityID=405. He said in there that leases are being sent out to prospective tenants. This could really take shape in the not-too-distant future.

The former Cleveland tech czar had a great blog discussion about Apple wanting to place a showroom/learning center downtown, but that he faced pressure from city leadership, and the deal died. It would be great to have them as part of the fold for this.
  8. You don't see either logic or reasoning in the comments section to cleveland.com. The Plain Dealer does everyone a disservice by including that unmoderated forum of ignorance.
  9. Ahhh. the good ole Dealer Plain. I love that their headline calls the place "Arcane Wrath." Great proofreading.
  10. Respectfully, it's "moot" point, not "mute." In times of bad weather, couldn't one simply take the WFL to and from TC to the Mall site? People would have others believe that humans do not know how to function in cities where it rains or snows, and that we should simply live out our days in enclosed malls. Another point: should the CC go to the Mall site, what TC should do is to upgrade its existing options so that people want and desire to go over there after the convention is done. I just don't see how we need to hand them everything (and get back only air rights in return). I'm fine with the Merchandise Mart going to the Higbee building. It's a shame that the District of Design can't be incorporated into all of this.
  11. The simple question for AlanR and others that support the TC site is this: if the CC is placed behind TC, then when/why would visitors ever leave TC? How does this increase foot traffic throughout the CBD? In my opinion, it doesn't.
  12. The cleveland.com website does the whole area a disservice by allowing such unmitigated stupidity and negativity to be broadcast to the proletariat. The viewing public would be helped if it just reported the facts, and left comments and discussions for people's living rooms and coffee shops.
  13. With all due respect, what is your native language?
  14. Your prior point is either flatly wrong or poorly argued, as the comment by Morrison was not objectively "racist" in any way (nor has anyone else alleged that it is; you are free to argue that it is incorrect on the merits). You shouldn't throw that "racist"comment around when you merely disagree with what someone says.
  15. You still fail to see how the comment isn't "racist." The groups that Morrison discussed were overwhelmingly Eastern European settlers. Those in power in Youngstown at the time where also exclusively white. There is not even a hint of "racism" in his comment, explicitly or through implication, aside from the one that you are attempting to read into because you disagree with his statement. Have you ever even been to Youngstown? I grew up there, and I can attest from those experiences that everything that he said is true. For the record, the mindset in question has nothing to do with one's "race," but rather upon their shared experience in the steel mills (as that was Youngstown's primary industry), as others wrote above, working for the "Big Daddy" corporation. Read the book "Steelworker Alley" by Robert Bruno, as it'll provide context for Morrison's comment. Moreover, your experience today has nothing to do with what happened in Youngstown 80 or so years ago. Your viewpoint that "modern society is doomed to be leaderless" is anachronistic as many things have changed since 1927.
  16. How is that racist? It's not. If anything, it's "class-ist." Morrison spoke of no races in his comment. I posit that "racist" isn't the term that you're looking for here. Your argument also seems to support his contention.
  17. How about actively moving people to shelters, where they can receive the assistance that they need? No one is trying to push the homeless "under bridges and to jails." Quite a stretch of the argument. Society should have a right, though, to require people to seek treatment for substance problems when society also feeds them. It might seem callous to say, but why should everyone's Public Square be the personal buffet line for so few? Mayor Jackson isn't ending the free meal programs that churches and other organizations have been doing. Rather, he just wants it moved. I don't see how this is unreasonable. There are taxpayer supported shelters, along with other non-profit services designed to help those in need. It doesn't make it socially acceptable for those that simply refuse to go to a shelter to remain in common areas belonging to everyone and make it their own private dwelling and/or bathroom. Those members of the Catholic Worker Community are always welcome to open up their own homes to people. That may give those affected the "dignity" that the author misguidedly believes the "City" has a responsibility to provide.
  18. Two thoughts: (1) Our state needs, and won't get, very tough land use legislation like Oregon has to halt the rapid spread of population to areas farther away from the city core. Legislation like this could protect both our farmland and cities. The only losers, really, would be developers who pave over places like Delaware County, in search of their next strip mall. (2) Why can't we as a state be as vigilant as NYC has been about crime? Twenty years ago, people feared being in parts of "the City." Now, it's an urban paradise, and one of the safest large cities in the world. How do cities like Cleveland and Youngstown rid themselves of the street gangs that have taken over neighborhoods (e.g., Slavic Village in Cleveland, the southside of Youngstown)?
  19. Perhaps these people shouldn't have been looking to deface public property. While it's sad that he died, what he was doing still wasn't ok. I already saw graffiti on the new utility boxes on Euclid Ave last night. There's no place for tolerating that vandalism in our society.
  20. I am hesitant to say this, but in so many ways this project is an example of why this area deserves what it ultimately gets. Let us not forget that the three (well, really two) men who entered into this boondoggle are elected officials. How have they garnered votes in the past? As long as the people of Cuyahoga County continue to elect those of the same ilk as Dimora, Hagan, and Kucinich, it will continue to lag the rest of the country, and corruption and inaction will continue. The voters should be outraged and appalled that they've elected these clowns, and Dennis the Menace as well. Please remember this little message as you hopefully head to the voting booth today. The people must do better for themselves.
  21. Punch- When you get a chance, check out the menu at Matchbox in D.C. Their food is excellent (2004 winner of the best new restaurant, Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington), and I think it would work well with top shelf beer. http://www.matchboxdc.com/ I also always liked the stuff at Schoolyard on Southport. Their beer selection always left much to be desired, at least in my opinion. Also, you should look into carrying Abita beers from Louisiana. Amber is an excellent beer. Good luck!
  22. That's nearly as bad as "Cleveland+." Who are these marketing firms that the cities are hiring? Their "branding" seems a bit, shall we say, infantile? Be Midwest? Really? How can one "Be Midwest"? Why does that apply to Dayton? It's as though this marketing firm is on a coast somewhere and thinks that Dayton stretches for 1,500 miles.
  23. How does anything ever occur in this city with all of the "Chicken Little" negativity? Why wouldn't someone want to live in there if you could own a refitted place for around $150K? The constant "I'll believe it when I see it" mindset in this town is really quite disturbing. I do hope that K&D go forward with this. The Breuer tower may not be everyone's favorite to look at now, but let's see what the plans are first before passing on the negative judgment.
  24. In addition, is the upturn in rail merely due to some larger, societal preference for rail over buses (for a litany of reasons, most notably lack of traffic stops and less hampered by snow)? Are surveys being contemplated as to "why" people are choosing rail over buses?

As for 20/30, I haven't renewed my recently-expired membership yet. I didn't make any of the events last year (again, work times are a conflict), so it hasn't been a priority. Is it worthwhile?
