  1. Cincy needs a lot of work on its new Architecture however. (OTR does have some better examples than most).
  2. Pretty good blog post explaining how this whole thing went down: https://cincyopolis.wordpress.com/2015/05/07/city-government-is-not-a-corporation-and-the-mayor-is-not-a-ceo/
  3. Just to spite the skyline one could open it up on Court street for probably much cheaper and tap into the same crowd ;). lol.
  4. I've parked there enough when in town to know that that part of vine isn't so much dodgy as it is dead. The Skyline Chili owner could take some responsibility for his neighborhood and work to activate what is a dead part of town - eyeballs on the street are all that are needed there, this isn't like the area was about 10 years ago, and its not like its right next to the courthouse/jail either. He's still missing out on a gold mine, he should at least test the water by at least catering to the people coming home from work crowd - stay open until 10 if you aren't happy with staying open until 3am. What he is doing is a dumb business move no self respecting businessman would miss out on an opportunity like this - plus his store is away from the main part of the business district which already has its own skyline - his market expansion is contingent upon points north from where he's located. I guess the only down side will be there won't be a nice within walking distance to OTR place to park without going into a garage anymore lol. Another suggestion if you haven't done so already is high quality cheese. Its amazing what a good quality cheddar can do to even a mediocre store bought can of Cincy chili ;)
  5. Aka artisinal chili parlor. Also the court and vine skyline is run by an idiot who is probably loosing 1000s of dollars by closing so early. Can you be so conservative that it blinds you from what makes solid business sense?
  6. Good job Cranley, keep angering your constituents, you'll be thrown out of office in no time ;)
  7. Would also be nice to see something like an Urban format target down there as well. Perhaps in one of the many gigantic surface lots at the edge of downtown. Done sparingly big chains aren't bad, the problem is when the whole neighborhood becomes nothing but them.
  8. Got wind that with a lot of gumption 1706 lang has had its facade fixed up. Let the haters continue to hate - at least something "too far gone" finally is getting saved in this city (and it wasn't 3CDC):
  9. Walnut Hills has great potential simply due to its proximity to uptown and downtown job centers, as well as dining/nightlife options in OTR, Hyde Park, Oakley, etc. Hopefully it will be developed in a way that is better looking than the USquare/Vine Street Flats garbage going up in CUF. However, I think some people have the impression that Walnut Hills is going to be "the next OTR", which I think is misguided. Definitely not the next OTR. The MLK/Walnut Hills corridor at 71 is going to be something though; I predict something completely new in Cincinnati. An area of true mid-level density the likes of which we don't really have here. Kind of like Rookwood, only more "Edge City" and less "I dropped my Legos." Walnut Hills is setup more like a lower density version of a Chicago Victorian neighborhood - streetcar oriented in its arrangement with a strong business strip surrounded by a much weaker but still fairly dense neighborhood with a mix of brick townhouses, old mansions (bigger yards on those in Cincy) and plenty of less grand frame workers houses. Walnut Hills aesthetically reminds me of a bombed out Wicker Park - something like that is the highest it could reach though that's been much diluted by the actions of the WHRF who feels its better to scale it down than to work with the excellent resources they have - still will be a strong neighborhood but sold way short.
  10. Most of the higher quality Mt Auburn houses were torn down... :( - the ones that were on Auburn for instance. With Walnut Hills there is a lot of opportunities for infill, if they don't decide to turn everything into pocket parks.
  11. I'm hoping that A) this is true and B) the developer does something that will bridge the gap between E and regular Walnut Hills - that would be an awesome and transformative project for a severely underutilized area. Since Hotels are popping up everyday, when is some hotel operator going to decide to buy out the Alms Apartments? As soon as that is cleaned up the whole area will boom.
  12. Because it's cheaper to brick up old wood windows than to refinish/re-caulk them or put in new windows that don't quite match. With central air and wood windows you want to put in storm windows which can detract from the appearance. Plus they did a remodel of Music Hall back in the 1970s when people bricked up windows to make things more energy efficient. Its part of the reason why places like the UC Law building have such tiny windows on them. Windows technology has gotten better so this isn't as much an issue as it used to be.
  13. :| All kinds of awful there. If John Faherty were fired over his inappropriate and unprofessional behavior perhaps my grandfather who was a journalist can finally stop spinning in his grave for a few minutes because the field still has integrity. I was actually more appalled by that than I was with the shoddy reporting and fear baiting. Thank you for writing to his boss about this.
  14. Not posting the article (no need to encourage the clickbait), but I caught wind of the following on Charlie Luken's facebook page regarding a hit piece by the Enquirer on OTR - he calls them out on irresponsible journalism. I'm not a big fan of the guy's tenure as mayor but this is spot on:
  15. Yes but why should my children even witness the event of a man being brutually gunned down, with his blood and guts spilling all over the pavement? Yes, it wasn't random, but the fact still stands: I don't want to witness a stray bullet potentially hitting me or my car, nor any of my friends or family. And I especially don't want my kids to witness a slain man pounding out his last breaths while he drowns in his own pool of blood. Stop with this OTR is generally safe rhettoric. It's idiotic, and just sounds as if your being paid to promote OTR by the city. That bullet could've EASILY hit a bystander, so the point stills stands, OTR is still the wild-wild west, and those who are traveling down there and trying to make a life are much like the brave first frontiers. If you want to risk your life go ahead. I'm scared to walk across the street because a stray car could come careening out in front of me. It happens you know, I heard of it on the news. ;)
  16. You haven't gotten outside of the Cincinnati area much have you?
  17. Knowledge is power ;)
  18. Its hard to place a mountain into a sandbox. Here is a good place to start, this is the public safety committee meeting that was held to address the shooting of Timothy Thomas. Cranley ran this meeting, watch his attitude and behavior towards the upset citizens. Its long but very very smoking gun to describe the attitude we are discussing and if you think he was young then, he hasn't really grown up since (we can cite many many more examples): Enjoy!
  19. I wish their original idea of redoing the Metal Blast room hadn't have fallen through.
  20. I think that's what's the most disgusting thing here - this was an opportunity for the city to help provide and restore a unique building, one of many fallow structures it could have leveraged to help sell Cincinnati's uniqueness but sigh, parochial petty poltics got in the the way. Its a huge tragedy. The quicker you guys get rid of Cranley the faster your city will see greatness.
  21. It's not going to happen in OTR. It will happen at the Banks, and maybe an uptown area. OTR Community Council is on record opposing it. That's an area I disagree with them on. OTR should trump up its history.
  22. Not sure about SoHo and Tribeca, but I do see a Wicker Park style neighborhood (hip Chicago hood) in OTRs future.
  23. Yeah look at all the shuttles that have to be run now to get people from Oktoberfest to the actual breweries, BAM you can actually not run shuttles as the streetcar would do the job.
