Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
neilworms replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentCincinnati certainly has the look of a much larger city, now its finally getting some of the feel ;) Nothing but good things all around for this, its also taking the food scene to a much higher level than it was before too. Success breeds success and I'm sure this is not over yet.

Sun Kil Moon I only really like live, he bellows out his lines, its an interesting delivery and his lyrics are pretty well written too (though a touch too rambly). I don't get Panda Bear either that was such a boring show when I heard them.

Yeah and the lo-fi just keeps getting worse - at first it was kind of unpolished, now its lets make everything sound like it was recorded in a bathroom. Check this out *current "lo-fi" craze: Vs the much better recorded "live" performance: Older lo-fit hipster music was more like this: I'll put it in a very "millennial way" moar wifi. Frankly I think its really hurting rock and roll lately it needs to become unstuck. I'm going to add that the sheer awfulness of pop culture ~1997-2003 was another reason why rock is the way it is now. The first wave of these lo-fi hipster bands were an amazing breath of fresh air to a really really terrible overly glitzy overly angsty (manufactured angst) corporatized rock scene. Now they've become stale and inbred in their sound - something needs to shake them up. If you want innovation now, go to rap, there's a lot of great stuff happening in that world these days :)

Cincinnati: Parking Modernization
Just saw this: http://wvxu.org/post/parking-meter-changes-coming-downtown-and-otr Of particular note: This is bad for Bicyclists, as it will remove a significant number of bicycle parking spots. You guys should probably be working on this, caused huge uproar in Chicago when this happened, though the Active Trans alliance managed to preserve a few old meters for Bicycle parking - Cincinnati's bike advocacy group isn't that strong.

Does anyone know if there is a functional churchbell still in Taft's? Would be cool if there was one that was rung every hour or so and for special events.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
While its good to know the kind of bs being spewed out of this radio station, I think its a heck of a lot more productive to summarize basic points instead of going crazy every time some petty little drama is stirred up by them. I'm kind of getting sick of these sorts of posts.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
In the early streetcar years Kevin Flynn was a known streetcar supporter who showed up to a variety of pro-streetcar events. Why someone who is confined to a wheelchair as a result of a high speed car accident (link: http://enquirer.com/editions/2002/02/23/loc_crash_leaves_one.html) would oppose a transportation mode with the best ADA characteristics is baffling. I think he's playing politics, we'll see how he performs come decision time ;) WLW is a plague on your city.

Greater Cincinnati Metro (SORTA) and TANK News & Discussion
What are transit challenges facing the region? As the region looks to attract more jobs and new residents to the urban core, Greater Cincinnati's largest public transportation system knows it has to play a bigger role. Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority board Chairman Jason Dunn says it's imperative for Metro officials to be part of efforts to recruit new companies and expand others. Transit leaders must have strong partnerships with top executives at Procter & Gamble, Kroger, Macy's and dunnhumbyUSA to help attract and retain young professionals. The next year is critical for Metro, which introduced a new CEO this week and held its annual meeting on Friday. In 2015, the transit authority will be in charge of hiring a streetcar operator; continue to lay groundwork for a potential regional transit tax ballot initiative; and figure out how to attract new riders after three straight years of flat ridership numbers. Here are five challenges facing the transit authority in 2015: Cont Fun Fact- The RTC turns an annual profit from gameday parking revenues. Which is why they should throw that money back into making it a tranit hub for intercity buses. This is tourism plain and simple, it will bring revenue to the city.

Cincinnati: CUF / Corryville: Development and News
Even in the larger cities where urban culture / new architecture is better as a whole there are still junk projects, take for instance this one in my neighborhood, looks like something out of the 1970s, though at the very least its more substantial looking than much of the junk by the University in Cincinnati: https://ssl.cdn-redfin.com/photo/68/bigphoto/832/08635832_0.jpg The learning curve is pretty darn steep which is so strange, I don't understand it.

Cincinnati Brewery / Beer / Alcohol News
I wish I liked their beers more. Their branding and taproom are amazing. I even heard rumors of the rooftop being opened up. Shame almost all the beer is horribly unbalanced towards the hoppy side - bringing their ideas of graphic design to a local Cincy business is great, shame that their beer is from one of the worst cities in the country for beer IMO which is San Fran (again I don't like hops).

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
I have, it was super junky. It largely exists because its on a parkway that basically becomes the Eisenhower Expressway, think Liberty Street on stereoids, and the neighborhood until the last 15 years or so was really sketchy with one street being historically one of Chicago's most notorious skid rows (next to the prison tower). They've tried to make it somewhat more pedestrian friendly by putting futuristic color changing LED lights on it and adding a center divider. The futuristic lights btw make the gas station seem even more out of place. (That and the fact that the neighborhood is a hot part of town which may have rents rivaling the Gold Coast if trends continue). http://assets.dnainfo.com/generated/chicago_photo/2013/04/pillars-of-light-13657427483527.jpg/extralarge.jpg

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
neilworms replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentThey also are talking a lot like big city trendy restaurateurs, something I'm very happy to see. I wonder how space restrictions force restaurants to be more creative and thus create better food scenes?

That place is actually an asset to the neighborhood. Put a mural on it or something to make it a little less ugly.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
I'd live in 1323, its secluded yet in the middle of everything :) I like this project a lot (and the other building on Elm that's new). Btw, there is an exceptionally nice one just north of the new building on Elm that has arched windows - its an absolutely gorgeous restore and looks like they spend more on the windows. Also I can't wait to see North of Liberty republic get restored, its much more intact.

Cincinnati Brewery / Beer / Alcohol News
If anyone knows anybody affiliated with their company they should let them know you want a taproom. Someone should at least talk with the Brewery District folks about it. Its such an obvious idea given how there are 2 other breweries in an area known for its brewing history.

Also I only think the whole Tiny house thing would work in really really hyper inflated markets like San Francisco, perhaps as "back houses" ala a coach house or a granny apartment.

Don't forget that Liberty is supposed to have a road diet. I've heard the road diet project is on hold. Not surprised, its a good idea and the Mayor is (mostly) allergic to them.

Cincinnati: Mayor John Cranley
That Cincinnati Magazine article on Red Bike is such a shill for Cranley. He's trying very hard to court some Urbanists - ditto on his interview with the Urbanophile a few months back. Everyone needs to remind everyone else what his history is.

Cincinnati: Bicycling Developments and News
If I'm biking from my house to somewhere and back, I'll use my own bike, but most of the time I walk or take the bus to class or work without my bike because I don't want to carry it around or lock it up and have to worry about it while working. Then I'll use a Red Bike on my lunch break, or to go to the grocery store after work, or to go between classes, or to get to the coffee shop, etc. I find all sorts of random excuses to ride. This morning I was in a good conversation on the phone with my boyfriend so I jumped on a bus. Then when I got to work I found out that I needed to ride the streetcar route for a work-related project...so I checked out a Red Bike and rode the whole route. After work (right about now) I'm going to check out a Red Bike at Aronoff and bike to Kroger on Vine St. Then I'm going to take another Red Bike to Findlay Market and catch the bus home from there. Believe me...I was outspoken about how little I thought I'd use the system because of my three bikes at home. I've been equally shocked. I was also pretty cynical about this program when it first started up in Chicago too, because the yearly pass was so cheap I dived in, and I don't think I'm leaving anytime soon. When I'm down in Cincy visiting family its been wonderful too, can't wait for them to expand to more of the city. ---- Also, gotta love how this article makes it look like Cranley was the guy who came up with this idea, what a load of bull: http://www.cincinnatimagazine.com/citywiseblog/red-bike-revolution/

Ridesourcing
Then don't make assumptions about Lyft/Uber drivers. I've talked to more than a few who do use it as a full time job. Granted I live in the 2nd largest taxi market in the United States, but its definitely something people are using as a full time job. Jake's experiment is interesting because as I understand it Taxi companies have fees to make earing a full time living for drivers challenging - I'm wondering if its easier for Uber/Lyft Drivers... (though with Obama's election supervisor in charge of PR for Uber I do wonder if its true - not a slight at Obama but a nod to just how incredibly effective David Plouffe was at selling Obama as something he really wasn't)
