  1. The city still has a long way to go, and being single and almost 30 makes it not an option. In spite of what Forbes says its a pretty terrible place to marry late. There are a lot of bizarre social cultural things that make it tough to live in as a young single person. I would like to see Cranley and his ilk politically beaten into submission, I think this is their last stand, but we'll see how it unfolds in the next 4 years (or less). I'm happy to be a strong cheerleader and to promote Cincy as a weekend tourist destination in Chicago though :) Also I think living in a positive social environment makes a lot of my arguments stronger than if I was constantly surrounded by strong cynicism - I actually got in a discussion on the enquirer boards with a streetcar opponent who conceded that he couldn't believe how positive I was about what its effects would be on the city. I think Cincy needs that and its best served (for now) outside of the bubble ;)
  2. I'm going to second this, though part of me was dreading having to head into town next week for the holidays, I really didn't want to see the state of Cincinnati's already deeply bruised psyche after this failed. I was hoping for something positive not a return to the cynicism that pretty much chased me out of town a few years back.
  3. Hey there is one advantage to this, Cincinnati is finally getting some high quality journalism.... http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2013/1218/If-Cincinnati-mayor-derails-streetcar-project-feds-want-money-back
  4. I would recommend sending letters to Mann urging Flynn to change sides.
  5. What happens if he abstains from voting?
  6. I'm hoping your sarcastic, this whole mess reaks of political games...
  7. Its extremely frustrating that they weren't, what kind of election doesn't have public polls beforehand?
  8. ^-If this was any other city this would be something you'd be explaining to a child, not a popular political faction of adults.
  9. Its all the more sad given how great the quality of pre WWII architecture is in Cincy - there is plenty of great traditional architecture. I'm surprised they don't do a better job hiding the garage, its not too much to ask to enclose it a bit more...
  10. I had very similar sentiments 6 years ago. Also Cincinnati was a factor in my developing an interest in Cities. Growing up near Dayton and traveling down quite a bit gave me a very positive opinion of the place, I really felt something was different about the place, seeing neighborhoods like Clifton and the area around campus as a kid showed me a taste of vibrant urban environment that I wouldn't have gotten had my parents always stayed up in Dayton the whole time. This combined with a trip to europe to show me what transit does for cities and how a city can be fully functional really put the interest in Cities into me. Then I moved to Cincy for college, and the place didn't meet expectations, it was a miserable dying town with people who were from the lowest social circles to the highest level of government petty and small minded. I learned about mentalities like if its not at your parish, Kroger, or high school than it doesn't matter - a mentality I found infuriating and one that made it very hard for me to make friends. Still the city is beautiful and worth fighting for, but it sure is hell not a place I want to be while I'm a young single professional. The actions today reinforced that, which is all the more sad given the impossible happened in the last 8 years - genuine progress. There is enough forward momentum now that things will get better for downtown, but not at the rate it should have been going. I am pretty confident that even after I settle down I will not return to Ohio or nearby, at one point I was considering it if Cincinnati continued to get its act together... Edited the f-bomb, KJP
  11. I wouldn't expect anything locally. here's the Columbus Dispatch take (complete with rail puns) http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2013/12/05/council-stops-spending-on-cincinnati-streetcar.html Reporting on the streetcar debacle, now with way less myopia.
  12. In spite of the tea party's libertarian origins, its pretty much fully a radical conservative group these days. Look no further than in Cincinnati's back yard - the Springboro board of education fights where the Tea Party faction (not all of them) were pushing for creationism in schools (even though I care less for that town - for the greater good they luckily lost last election). Not to say that there aren't varied groups (and with any group that 100% unified top down you aren't going to get a completely homogeneous group), but with fox and talk radio amping up the movement its attracted a very large constituency that is socially conservative, and not just socially conservative but radically so.
  13. ^-This recent stain has already led to a backlash, remember how the whole shutdown/default went down. Once the US Chamber of Commerce came out against it, the whole thing stopped. There were also murmurs that the business community was going to throw more money in primaries for more pro-business canidates. Unfortunately I've got a feeling that Cincinnati's current leadership is too stupid/arrogant to even consider their main backers point of view.
  14. I don't think it was Cranley that put it in there. When I lived in town I thought there was something wrong with the water. For a half second it seemed like things were FINALLY going the right way for Cincy. Its kind of come back with a vengeance.
  15. I'm shocked that more people didn't use the video of his dim witted leadership prior to the riots, it was downright stupid to vote for such a leader downright stupid.
  16. Ditto with Chicago, and you know what's weird? They know about St. Louis which is just as far, and suffered even worse economic blows than Cincy did. You know why they know St. Louis exists, because unlike Cincinnatians people in St. Louis actually DO REALIZE THERE IS A WORLD BEYOND THEIR VERSION OF WEST CHESTER!
  17. This quote from the enquirer makes me mad, because looking at Cranley's history proves that he cannot lead a shoebox, and its pretty obvious from his nasty and unprofessional behavior now, that he can't lead. I hope to hell there is a recall of this guy. Even putting his viewpoints which are outdated at best, he's so terrible at uniting people and getting things done, not something Cincy needs at this juncture at all. I still stand by my earlier statement that his actions on a certain day on 2001 alone made him unfit for the mayorship.
  18. They do run on Friday nights, but not past 10, hopefully with the route's success they will make it run later, for instance it would be nice if the last run were 10 mins later for when the last Megabus pulls into UC from Chicago.
  19. Doubt it, I know people who worked for Cranley's campaign and as much as I don't like him, the fact is, he didn't officially reach out to COAST, he didn't damn them either (they are part of his base) but he refused to take a more active stance with them. The image I get is of an evil castle with 4 diabolical men all sitting at their thrones when you say that. Come on back down to the reality of the situation.
  20. I'm glad I set my expectation low, way to go PG!
  21. Here's also how to look at it: Absolute madness :x
  22. On that note, I've talked with a few of my friends up here about what's going on in Cincy (including one who traveled there and found it absolutely beautiful) and each and everyone of them has a wide eyed look on their face and states WHAT?
  23. As awful as he is, do you have poll numbers to back that up? One thing that drove me nuts following the election btw is the lack of public polling on it? Was IPR at UC contacted at all to do any kind of local polling for this race or anything?
  24. That would be two riots that Cranley's "leadership" helped stoke the flames of ;)
  25. Not sure if this fits, but it looks like OTR is getting a pinballcade - http://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/porters-pinball-parlor-in-cincinnati Kind of wish they'd go the whole way and make it a barcade, I would be impressed if that kind of place opened in Cincinnati: Examples: http://barcadebrooklyn.com/ http://hqbeercade.com/ http://groundkontrol.com/ (my favorite) http://16-bitbar.com/ (Ohio - Columbus always picks up on national trends before the rest of the state).
