The Cleveland casino already has two attached hotels, the Ritz Carlton and the Renaissance.

RR you mentioned a bookstore. You might want to check out the gift shop at the Cleveland Public Library "new" building. They sell hundreds of new and used books. Not as good as a bookstore, but last time I was there I purchased several books.

There is a fantastic liquor store on West 6TH. Tower City has several Men's clothing stores including Brooks Brothers. There are also several stores for children's clothes and toys. Tower City has 75 stores, so there probably is something for you. Finally, there are Men's clothing stores around downtown such as across from the Wyndham, in the Huntington building, and in the Hyatt, to name a few. There are a few boutique stores scattered around. West 9th, 5th Street Arcade, and the Statler Building are a few places that come to mind. I agree that shopping downtown is sub par, but there are some options.

As a downtown resident, I would love to have a hardware store.
  5. A question for ClevelandOhio, I am unsure how to make a value judgment about the stats in your table. I see that the poverty rate for downtown is over 24%. This does not fit with the current tight rental market for relatively expensive apartments. I am not disputing the numbers, but as one who works with statistics, I know that an accurate interpretation of the statistics is very difficult. Do you have any comments regarding the interpretation of the stats. As I said I do not dispute the numbers, but two cities with similar numbers may not necessarily be similar in future potential.

I find it interesting that a grocery store is opening next to Walmart. As I recall a major complaint when Walmart was first planning a store in Steelyard Commons was that it would destroy Dave's and other stores. Apparently that was not the case.
  7. I was surprised by the comment section. I was expecting a Cleveland.com slant, but most of the comments were very positive toward Cleveland.
  8. I think sometimes we forget that CSU is trying to build an appealing and welcoming college campus in the downtown area, not an urban density project.
  9. As a resident of the WHD I agree with 327. This is a real downtown neighborhood. There are some people who have lived here for 15 to 20 years. I love the bars and restaurants but the truth is, the neighborhood is changing. We need more amenities to support a population of over 4000 people in an 8 block area! Tomorrow is our street fair. I hope everyone will come and enjoy our neighborhood. All of the great restaurants will have food booths. There will be bands playing at both ends of east 6th. Local artists will be showing their works. It is a great time for all.

We own a 2 bedroom 2 bath loft condo in the Grand Arcade which is located next door to the Erie Lofts between West 4th and West 6th on St. Clair Ave. We have lived here in the Warehouse District for over 8 years and love it. It can get noisy outside on weekends, especially in the summer, but we enjoy the vibrancy. My wife and I moved here from Chicago. We had lived downtown near State and Division and the noise there was much greater and every day. The Warehouse District is a real urban neighborhood. We have a grocery store (Constantinos), several Hair Solon's, walking distance to Tower City (an indoor mall), movie theaters, loads of great restaurants and fun drinking establishmemts, etc. We even have our own Psychic (Fay's), if you are into that. If you are interested in our neighborhood, you may want to start at the Bingham building on West 9th. The link below should get you to a video showing the building. There are many more apartments in the area. Good Luck. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=dqb0tzo7UQo&feature=related

Many people new to the area get confused with the fact that there is a suburb called East Cleveland. I wanted to make sure you understood that this city is not part of Cleveland. Having said that, I would not reccommend East Cleveland due to high crime, etc. However, University Circle or Little Italy which are on the east side of Cleveland would be wonderful areas to live and very convenient to the Clinic. My wife and I have lived downtown for 8 years and love it. From downtown to the Clinic would be about 20 minutes on the Healthline transit route.

I wish we had 100 people like Dan Gilbert, from all over the country, "speculating" on Cleveland's future with an intent to improve it (and make a profit). I would not agree with all of their plans, but it would be exciting to have multiple plans for our future and people from outside our region actively involved.
  13. I had the same reaction. I stopped reading after the part about the Medical Mart.
  14. I am not sure where to start. Most respondents on this thread do not live in the WHD. As a resident, I love the bar and restaurants, but our neighborhood is more than that. People on this thread are continuously talking about bringing more residents downtown, but seem to forget that this is not the old "Flats". I love Naughty Mermaid. They have great seafood at a reasonable price. Check it out!!
  15. Just a quick question. I do not see any lights so I am wondering what this space will look like when the roof is covered with snow. Perhaps I am not seeing the picture correctly. Are those globes hanging from the roof lights or fans?
  16. Htsguy, my apologies.
  17. Htsguy, I think your comment was directed to me so I will respond. I am not auto-centric. My wife and I are planning to get ride of our only car someday soon. We walk everywhere downtown and take RTA to get to most other places. My only point was that when the Malls are completed, they will once again produce an enormous downtown park given the size of our downtown. As a city we have many needs and limited resources. I would like to do a great job with the Malls and let the design of PS which has survived for over 100 years stay the same for a while. We continually argue whether an historic building like the Stanely building should be torn down for new construction, but many of those same people have no problem changing the historic design of Public Square.
  18. I agree that more events on PS would increase the use of the area. Simply closing the roads and turning the square into a large park will not increase usage and pedestrian trafic. I walk through PS almost every day on my way to Fitworks and it seems fine to me. Given limited resourses I would like to focus on our new park - the Malls over our new convention center.
  19. Has anyone noticed the bottleneck at virtually every intersection downtown this week? It must be caused by closing Ontario and Superior for Marine Week. Is this what we can expect if Public Square is turned into a giant park with no cross roads?
  20. I apologize for the typos. I was using my cell phone and I can not find the edit button.
  21. I hesitated posting this but here goes. Our current square has two fountains, a park like area (northwest quadrant), and a lot of people waiting for public transportation. The difference between those photos and today is - wait for it - the color of the people waiting for public transportation. I have always suspected that the negative perceptions of Public Square have more to do with the people on the square then anything else. I live downtown and walk through Public Square every day. I have never seen all of the alleged activities like drugs, muggings, etc. Personally, I like Public Square. I lamented the lack of a Public Equate when I lived in Chicago. OK, I have said my peace. Be gentle.
  22. Khalifa, I totally agree!
  23. Cleveland is in a freefall?
  24. Several posts have mentioned a concern about the ability of the roof holding certain structures on the final "park roof" such as fountains, sculptures, etc. If the roof of mall c can handle a dump truck filled with dirt on 4 wheels, then I would guess it could hold most anything the final mall design requires.
  25. Maybe all of those amenities will be part of Phase II. However, I am not sure I want a casino with all those amenities. I think that would hurt the local places downtown.
