  1. ^What time does it open Thursday?
  2. There seems to be a lot of hand ringing about the site of this school. Can someone explain why this site is so much worse than the school Dick Pace is proposing to put right on the lakefront as part of his development? I don't believe I heard nearly as much disdain for that idea, and in fact I think people supported the idea of a quality school to serve downtown residents. That location is much closer to the lake than this one on Detroit, so what are people's thoughts?
  3. ^I think this plus the Cavs victory rally last June showed that the Mall is the perfect place for events like this. Was at the rally last year (here's to a repeat) and being about halfway up the hill it was still very easy to see the stage and the activity.
  4. I think this is a negative way to look at it. Failed concept, yes, but I think we all knew the medical mart concept was just that, a concept, unproven and carried the element of risk. That risk became greater when MMPI got out of the picture as it's other marts faltered, but by then there was no turning back. So we may be left with a building that needs to refine / redefine it's purpose, but I think everyone knew this was a possibility coming into it. Back then however the goal was to get a new convention center built, a goal since the 1980's that routinely went no where. The convention center got built this time because of the Global Center concept, and without it I fear we'd have no new convention center or new Hilton hotel, both of which played a key role in a 2016 that redefined Cleveland and created great momentum. So we took a risk on the concept, but the resulting new convention center, rebuilt malls, and new Hilton hotel were worth it, and we have an asset that can be re-purposed into something great. It's new, energy efficient building in a great location attached to the convention center and hotel.
  5. I swear if this town cannot muster the energy to move the freeway south and open up the lakefront. The closing of that plant is a once in 100 year opportunity to transform that area. The curve ONLY exists because there was a powerplant there!! Taking out the curve and moving the freeway makes 90 safer, while unifying Gordon park again into something that can become a regional asset. We screw this up and it will remain like that for decades upon decades. Move the freeway and clean the land...PLEASE. I can't believe options that don't do this are even considered.
  6. Watching the Cleveland shots in that commercial instantly made me think of Gotham City...in a good way. Absolutely beautiful.
  7. Anyone know what the hold up in finishing this project is now? It feels like this project has been going on forever.
  8. Fantastic photo and what an amazing rendering too! The Terminal Tower complex fooled me at first as well. Great photo find!
  9. So does the IBM new construction count as the first "win" for the opportunity corridor?
  10. So many different publications, websites, news organizations, advertorials, etc. all have different list that come out and get airtime, it's hard to know what's what, especially since they all use different methodologies that suit their needs/audiences.
  11. Awesome ranking for CMA, but couldn't they have come up with a better description, especially when reading the more in-depth information on all the other museums?? "A cast of Auguste Rodin's famous sculpture, "The Thinker," that was damaged by a pipe bomb in 1970 stands outside this museum overlooking Cleveland's Wade Park."
  12. I think too much effort has been spent debating buses through the square. I think we all can agree the square works best without any vehicles going through it, but we also acknowledge that PS has always been a transit hub. KJP has mentioned the big holdup to buses being routed around the square is the added cost to RTA, which is already cash strapped, so I think a better use of debate is to think of ways to reduce/eliminate this cost for RTA. Someone mentioned a parking tax, and I wonder if the corporate community could provide support, as they do for the free trolley downtown. There's got to be a way to meet both objectives. For the year that the square was closed people adjusted, cars adjusted, transit riders adjusted, so it can work. Now we have to figure out the cost, and then I think we have a win win.
  13. This article has a cool slider composite picture where you can compare the old square to the new (well the rendering) http://www.wired.com/2016/07/clevelands-new-park-will-define-resistance-rnc/
  14. I'm holding judgement on the color scheme until more detailed renderings are released, but I do like how the color / material tie ins on the garage columns creates an effect that looks like the building is floating above the base.
  15. Plus I noticed a lot of those companies just moved to the suburbs, like Progressive which they show as a loss, but also show moved to Mayfield Village. I saw Solon, Avon and others on the list. Total BS and terrible reporting.
  16. At least the blade just published a list. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette ran a very negative article about Cleveland and manufacturing loss based on this list, as if to put a damper on the positive press Cleveland's been getting lately. Here's the first couple of sentences from the Post Gazette: CLEVELAND — Donald Trump couldn’t have picked a better location than Cleveland to kick off a campaign aimed at a population depressed and frustrated by the loss of manufacturing might. Since 1960, Cleveland has lost dozens factories, according to a list compiled by The Blade of Toledo, Ohio, from available public records, news reports, and interviews with academics and the Cleveland Federal Reserve. http://www.post-gazette.com/local/region/2016/07/03/Once-a-powerhouse-Cleveland-reeling-from-loss-of-manufacturing-might-Republican-convention/stories/201607010200 I'm really disappointed that these two cities that have faced the same decline and rebirth as Cleveland would publish such a negative story, especially the post gazette's article that's full of old stereotypes and inaccuracies. Both cities know how hard a region has to work to revamp a "rust belt" image and this just seems like throwing sour grapes our way because news from the CLE has been generally positive.
  17. ^You're also right about our "leadership" and that attitude is doing so much damage. I also believe if we can't deal with the reality that our most historic and vulnerable structures are often in the care of those least able to invest in them we will have more and more structures fall into disrepair beyond saving. It's a double whammy and it's hitting the east side hard.
  18. The east side suffers from owners who have the least means to maintain buildings. While this is especially true of homeowners, many small, mom and pop business owners who own their building are much the same, they just cannot maintain the buildings. It's too expensive. After decades of urban flight we have the poorest people of the least means concentrated in the city, living in homes and operating businesses in buildings at or near 100 years old. So we have a situation where the buildings that need the most investment and care are in the hands of those least able to care for them. I've wanted to retool programs like the storefront renovation program, and even home maintenance programs, to acknowledge this problem, which is painfully true on the east side and leads to the wholesale demolition of homes, businesses and entire communities. There has to be a way to help people maintain their homes and businesses and save the city's historic housing and commercial stock.
  19. If the Cavs do their thing like last night and win this in 6 or 7 games, what's the likelihood we can party in the new Public Square? Seems like the victory parade would end at Public Square and that would be a great way to break in the new "living room" of Cleveland. If they're not thinking of it the city should really be preparing for this possibility. Also gives a chance to see how large crowds will function there prior to the RNC, make adjustments to plans if necessary.
  20. This study will look at St. Clair from East 55th all the way to the Euclid border. The first round 2 public meeting was held in Collinwood last week. There will be a future meeting in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood.
  21. I also see crosswalk signals there, so I'm thinking maybe these lights and signals are more about giving pedestrians the opportunity to press a button and cross safely if needed, but maybe someone in the know can give some insight into the plan.
  22. Cleveland population loss slows; find latest census estimates for every U.S. city, county and state By Rich Exner, cleveland.com on May 19, 2016 at 12:01 AM, updated May 19, 2016 at 7:38 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland's population decline has slowed considerably over the last few years, according to new estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau. The latest estimates, which are for July 2015, place Cleveland's population at 388,072, down 2.2 percent from 396,815 when the census was taken in 2010. If the estimates are accurate at the midway point before the next official count in 2020, Cleveland is on pace for its smallest loss since its population peaked at 914,808 in 1950. Cleveland lost an estimated 8,843 people in the five years since the last census, in comparison to an official loss of 81,462 from 2000 to 2010. http://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/index.ssf/2016/05/cleveland_population_slows_fin.html
  23. You can't see them in this pic but there actually are metal picnic tables that match the metal benches already on Mall C. On food truck Fridays @ City Hall I've sat there and it is a nice feature. They could certainly can add more because they fill up quickly. Edit you can actually see one of the picnic tables, under the trees between the red flowers. There's like three tables on the city hall side, and three on the county courthouse side. Will be much nicer when the trees mature and offer more shade.
  24. I figured it would have been posted here, but I don't see anything.... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,29327.0.html That is a drive thru subway restaurant.
