its ridiculous we let places like this get to such a point of disrepair. ugh, so utterly depressing.

  13. great post. looking forward to more. I need to visit sf sometime. ugh.
  14. I tend to agree with your sentiment JSkinner, but I also think this is the ideal location for such a hotel. It will solidify a 'sense of place' for Walnut Street, which will more likely cause continued spill over development surrounding the area that otherwise wouldn't happen if that 'sense of place' wasn't there. If a boutique hotel was placed at 8th and Sycamore, it would be an island unto itself and spillover wouldn't happen/would be slow to happen.
  15. Well if you live on the west side of town, you won't be using the interstates much if at all. This is the group that needs to be convinced most.
  16. I heard about this from a friend of mine who's neighbor is Roxanne Qualls. He said that she said someone from louisville is going to turn it into a boutique hotel similar to one down there. Can't remember the name.
  17. i agree, the way the slideshow transitions hurts my eyes. Its too sharp. Is there an easy way to make the change smoother? Otherwise, great job on the site!

This is the wrong mindset. Look at Portland. They are the same size as Cincinnati. In fact, they have passed us up in size. In 20 years, you'll be saying 'we can't compare ourselves to cities like Portland." Theyre in our league now, but theyre growing up. Cincinnati will continue to drown in mediocrity unless mindests change and people realize how great a city Cincinnati is and should be.

YPs generally have big goals and dreams for themselves career wise. They want to live in a city which has big goals and dreams for itself. This is why places like Chicago attract them. Cincinnati is OK with mediocrity and actually shuns those that have bigger and better ideas. The urbanophile did a great write up on this mindset in the Midwest, and it really opened my eyes to how true it is. Until Cincinnati attempts to achieve bigger and better, it will never attract the bigger or better.
  21. I was completely underwhelmed by Nashvile when I was there in July. I liked some of their narrow streets downtown and I applaud them for finding their 'Music City' niche, but the West End was terrible, Germantown was just ok, Centennial Park was terrible in most places (although beautiful around their main lake) and the entire city north of the Cumberland River felt like you were in some soutern shanty town. Not to mention all the raping of hillsides that is going on in the southern burbs. Reminded me of Green Twshp in Cincy but worse. Sorry, but Nashville is Trashville in my book.
  22. I think we have enough now ... we need more hole-in-the-walls now! These won't open up in DT. This is what OTR, Northside, Clifton, etc. is for.
  23. I've been to the one in Columbus once and I hope the one here will be much different. The one in Columbus is very much a night/dance club which doesn't fit at all in Fountain Square IMO... I would anticipate it being pretty similar. I've been talking with the owner and it sounds like the same concept to me. Opening late October. weird, since the website says 'Coming to Cincinnati New Years Eve'.......
  24. So Sherman, you support the concentration of the poor and poverty stricken? It has been well documented that when poverty is concentrated, other social ills like crime, drugs, and continued poverty become a much much bigger issue. And these issues are regional problems, not neighborhood-only ones. We all pay for welfare, emergency room runs for the uninsured, etc. and if we allow for it to stay concentrated, we will always be paying more. What's cheaper, to continue to support concentrated poverty because that's what the market says is correct or actually do something about it and perhaps, in the long term, pay less towards social services, etc. because poverty isn't as concentrated. Clearly, the federal government has taken the latter opinion. I aree with the policy of deconcentrating poverty. This is very important. What is unclear as of now is what this does to people's social capital. While it may increase their economic capital, their social capital is severed when they move out of the neighborhood they grew to rely on.
