Blockchains and Cryptocurriences
Good story... Car dealer Bernie Moreno has a big idea to transform Cleveland into U.S. blockchain leader By Andrew J. Tobias, cleveland.com | Posted June 06, 2018 at 03:16 PM | Updated June 06, 2018 at 03:19 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Bernie Moreno has an idea, and he wants you to hear him out. Blockland. Moreno, the high-octane luxury car dealer and influential Cleveland civic leader, wants to make Northeast Ohio a national epicenter of all things blockchain, the digital ledger technology best known as driving Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. However, Moreno’s pitch intentionally steers clear of cryptocurrency, which is only a portion of what blockchain can do, and instead focuses on broader applications for business and government. His vision is in the early stages. But it includes organizing a blockchain industry conference here sometime this year, encouraging employers like the Cleveland Clinic, KeyBank and Progressive Insurance to research putting the technology to use, and finding funding for local universities to tailor their curriculum around blockchain research and training future experts in the field. Clarkson was a no-show yesterday as well. At least he scored and didn't have one of JR's infamous 0-7,000 games.

I'm officially calling that JR play, "The Rebound".

Cleveland: Downtown: nuCLEus
^Class A office space is beginning to dwindle, and will soon justify the building of a new office tower. Maybe more of an office component and the scaling back of residential, if that's the hold-up. Maybe a scaling back of everything if that works even better. It would suck, but there's plenty of room left around downtown for a large skyscraper in the future.

Cleveland: Population Trends
^Nothing get's any attention at 9th and Prospect. Nothing. Not when it comes to population loss. I brought up Cuyahoga County being 2nd in population to Franklin County last year to one of the Council Members. The Council Member had no clue, and had no idea as to how to address it in any way. And no, I'm not joking.

Cleveland: Population Trends
^That's funny :-D With all seriousness though, much of the east-side is still in never ending free-fall. It is both amazing and depressing to see the amount of abandonment spread across the east-side, creeping into areas which were stable for a very long time.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
^^I don't think the team should go into Boston (undefeated at home during the playoffs) for Game 5 without the mindset that the game is a must-win. The pressure would be on the Cavs during Game 7 more so than on Boston.

Great game last night- the only reason it got as close as it did was the turnovers. Game five is a must win. Go Cavs!!!

Cleveland: Superior Arts District: Development and News
^^I don't know why I thought the building was going to be a rehab of one of the existing buildings along Superior, but it looks like it's a new construction. Should blend well with the area. It's on the May 21st BZA agenda. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/bza/agenda/2018/crr05-21-2018.pdf Calendar No. 18-99: 2125 Superior Ave. Ward 7 Basheer S. Jones 13 Notices 2125 Superior Holding LLC., owner, proposes to construct a new 58 unit apartment building in a C3 and C4 Semi-Industry District. The appellant appeals for relief from the strict application of the following sections of the Cleveland Codified Ordinances: 1. Section 357.09(b)(2)© which states that an 11 foot interior side yard is required at south side of lot and 0’ proposed. 2. Section 357.08(b)(I) which states that a 22 foot rear yard is required and 13 feet are proposed. 3. Section 355.04 which states that the maximum gross floor area of building cannot exceed ½ lot area, or in this case 12,750 square feet and the appellant is proposing 58,066 square feet. Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
The divergence between "Employment" and "All Employees, In Thousands" is now over 80,000 people. The BLS is starting to make less and less sense to me. March's numbers for All Employees, In Thousands shows that the region has officially rebounded from the 2008 recession. Total preliminary employment is now at 1,053,400 for March of 2018 as compared to 1,048,300 in March of 2008. March's numbers for Employment have been flat since 2010, with an actual decrease since then. March 2008 Employment was at 1,015,856. March 2018 preliminary Employment is listed as 971,460. So which is it? That's a difference of over 80,000 people either employed or not according to the BLS. One listing is positive since the drop-off, the other negative. But an 80,000 person spread between the two just doesn't make sense.

^^That has to be part of a master plan. But with going on 60 years of regional stagnation and continual population decline in Cuyahoga County, we may not see it happen for some time...

I thought the same thing when reading it. Like, "This is the BEST the city could come up with"? The transit angle was great to learn about, however.

Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
^Kent State is one county away and has a student population of over 40,000. Cleveland State is nearing 20,000. There have to be bigger issues at play regarding keeping talent. Growing the talent pool is critical and I think Cleveland State is a big part of that. But Case's numbers are heartening since those grads will no doubt be working in eds and meds locally.

Any chance you could expand on that? I thought they were done when they bought the building where their offices are located.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
March 18 numbers are the highest posted for the region since the Great Recession in '08. Though the numbers of jobs added since then have been low, the good news is that the region OFFICIALLY hit rock bottom and now is poised for grown. The economy here is different than it was in '08, let alone '02, the recession from which we have yet to recover. Cleveland is statistically smarter for sure, which will benefit the region as a whole in the future.

^I'm not one that knows the process, so please excuse my ignorance... but I've read over the years about the "floating- pad" technique. Would that be used instead of driving all the way down to the bedrock? I would think that driving down to the bedrock would increase the cost of the building.
