Cleveland Cavs Discussion
$85 Million. Dan Gilbert is paying the man $85 Million. I'd venture to say this season his play hasn't matched that amount, but what do I know.

Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport
^Dunno... but it would be interesting to find out. Do other cities allow free landing fees for businesses downtown, at an airport which is located downtown? If free landing fees are actually allowed (or possible), it could give Cleveland a competitive advantage over other cities. As I look out at the empty Burke now, I don't get how city/regional leaders don't utilize Burke (and every other underutilized Cleveland asset) to the max in order to draw businesses (and people) here.

Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport
^Or Burke should just remain an airport until teleportation becomes possible. Burke is such an underutilized asset... anyone could see the purpose for an airport downtown when Cleveland was a major player when it comes to corporate headquarters. I'm convinced that Burke could be part of the sell to businesses to bring them back downtown again. Free landing fees for any business that relocates downtown with x amount of employees, along with whatever tax incentives the region and state is willing to employ. There you have it.

Cleveland: Historic Photos
Crazy how quickly the neighborhood rose and fell. We may never see that amount of density in a neighborhood outside of Shaker Square again in our lifetimes.

Cleveland: Glenville: Development and News
Glad to see this vacant lot redone- I pass by this lot often and wondered if/when there would be enough of a market to build on it. I would give E. 105th another 5 years- as long as University Circle continues to grow in employment, E. 105th has a good chance at becoming more attractive to potential buyers and tenants with jobs nearby.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Couldn't find a more appropriate thread for this. Maybe the Higher Education thread... however, welders make good money and this could equate to more local jobs with decent incomes. Lincoln Electric opens $30 million Welding Technology & Training Center in Euclid By Olivera Perkins, The Plain Dealer [email protected] EUCLID, Ohio - The Lincoln Electric Co. is counting on its new $30 million Welding Technology & Training Center to assist in closing the skills gap in that industry. "We believe that we can be a catalyst," said Christopher L. Mapes, the company's chairman, president and chief executive officer, of its effort to help in alleviate the mismatch between qualified welders and the many openings that are going unfilled. "We believe that we can be viewed as a thought leader relative to the success in addressing that issue." The company held a ribbon cutting Wednesday for the 130,000-square-foot, two-story facility, with expansive windows, that opened in January at its St. Clair Avenue campus. Doing something about the dearth of welders was a recurring theme at the event that included speeches by officials and tours of the state-of-the art facility. Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
Nice to see downtown's employment numbers over 100,000 again. I feel like the region's headed in the right direction- with the news of housing prices in Lakewood and the West Side along with the out-of-towners coming in. I think it's only a matter of time until those improvements are reflected in population and job gains in the near future.
-
Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Good catch- that would put a gain for the region of 2,881 people for the year '16. Any gain for the region is better than the opposite.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
^ ^^ KJP- I really liked your article. I think the BLS is slow when it comes to those numbers being reflected in data. The Nonfarm Jobs increased by an average of 1% year-over-year using their numbers. Our own eyes (and changes in our neighborhoods) tell us a different story. One day (hopefully soon), that energy will cross the river to east-side neighborhoods and communities which are struggling.

East Cleveland: News & Discussion
There's nothing that EC would be able to do if GE picks up and leaves Nela Park. Something I remember from Gary Norton maybe two years ago was a statistic he mentioned during a neighborhood meeting... that out of the 16,000 people who live in EC, 4,000 actually have jobs. I don't know if there's any chance EC will survive if GE moves. Time for me to do a photo thread of EC... though the city has been struggling for a long time, there are folks who have been there for years and are still prideful of their town. Same as many other east-side neighborhoods in Cleveland.

Cleveland: One University Circle
I know people haven't moved in yet... but...earlier articles mentioned a potential "Phase 2", which could include potential condos and office space. Since this project has been delivered, I would consider even a potential phase 2 to be more than just talk. ..."And they aren't in a rush to tackle phase two, northwest of the tower. First Interstate and Petros Development Corp. have just under an acre left to play with on the site, which they control through a long-term land lease with nonprofit neighborhood group University Circle, Inc. They're talking about more residential construction - including, possibly, condominiums - and exploring whether it makes sense to put offices on the lower floors of a second building. "We're just not there yet," Mitchell Schneider said. He hopes to figure out the make-up of the next project next year, with the goal of breaking ground in 2019." http://realestate.cleveland.com/realestate-news/2017/10/one_university_circle_apartmen.html

US Economy: News & Discussion
^That's why I was asking- how far off are those key raw materials in price when compared to what is produced here? If they're lower than what is produced here, would raising prices on steel and aluminum not made in the US negatively impact the price of steel here?
-
US Economy: News & Discussion
Cross posted from the terrorism thread... ^Bring 'em to Cleveland!! Can anybody explain the implications of increasing tariffs on steel and aluminum? From a domestic standpoint it doesn't seem negative, though I know that it won't mean that thousands of jobs will return to places like the Flats. Many jobs have been lost just due to an increase in technology while other countries have been importing steel.
