  1. $18.5 million for the second largest building in downtown Cleveland... yeah that's pretty cheap. A hotel at that intersection would probably do well.
  2. Well, I have to say that I recently visited the Chocolate Bar and the food and drinks were great. Service was good as well. Me and the Mrs. will definitely be going there again... she LOVED the chocolate peanut butter martini with the chocolate straw (yummy!).
  3. I personally like the "living wall" idea posted earlier in this thread. I think that would go well over this type of cafe. But a projection of images is also a good idea.
  4. Congrats to you Mayday!!!
  5. ^Very true. It is both saddening and amazing to see how hollowed out much of the east side has become- with increases in crime in neighborhoods which were much more stable just a few years ago.
  6. This will matter to some and not to others, but after talking to Chris Ronayne about the western site, he revealed that the surf will be negatively affected if the island were to be constructed by Edgewater Beach as planned. In the bigger picture of things- this matters not. However, it shows how many parties and interests (including surfers) will be affected by the port's relocation- whether it be east or west of the river.
  7. EXCELLENT PHOTOS!!! It's heartbreaking to see so many beautiful structures fall into disrepair.
  8. Just when I thought the negativity at the PD was tuned down a bit... they allow THIS trash to be posted.
  9. ^AND positive comments from the usual bashers at .bomb. Hopefully more will begin to realize we're not as bad as the world makes us seem.
  10. Maybe there will be some sort of programming going on within the lawn space on the student center footprint, like what the College of Urban Affairs does on the lawn along E. 17th. This could call for more activities, which could be planned concurrently at two sections of the campus. I am all for good design aspects along with street interaction, but this may not be a bad feature at all.
  11. ^Agreed. And I wonder if WE actually had anything to do with the PD toning down its constant Cleveland negativity...
  12. ^Agreed. Though I must admit, the regular daily Cleveland bashing from the PD has been toned down when compared to the recent past.
  13. ^This is true, but if you look at the region's employment by sector, manufacturing as a whole takes up a little over 10%, not 30% as in the recent past. Also, the health care field accounts for close to 20% of total local employment, which has proven to be more recession-proof than other sectors (though it is still affected by recessions, just not as much as manufacturing, for instance). These are good numbers, and I'm sure that they will improve in the short term.
  14. Yeah, our unemployment rate in April '10 is better than Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, Indianapolis, Louisville, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Detroit. I was just discussing this at work with someone- who said "no, that can't be. There's NO WAY our unemployment rate is lower than Columbus- Cleveland has NOTHING". I HATE this negative perception. But the beat goes on, and Cleveland continues to slowly, and silently, transform. We haven't been hit as hard as we would have in the past because our economy has finally diversified.

Obama: End dependence on fossil fuels By JULIE PACE, Associated Press Writer Julie Pace, Associated Press Writer – 31 mins ago PITTSBURGH – Seizing on a disastrous oil spill to advance a cause, President Barack Obama on Wednesday called on Congress to roll back billions of dollars in tax breaks for oil and pass a clean-energy bill that he says would help the nation end its dependence on fossil fuels. Obama predicted that he would find the political support for legislation that would dramatically alter the way Americans fuel their homes and cars, including placing a price on carbon pollution, even though such legislation is politically divisive and remains bogged in the Senate. "The votes may not be there right now, but I intend to find them in the coming months," Obama told an audience at Carnegie Mellon University. "I will continue to make the case for a clean energy future wherever and whenever I can, and I will work with anyone to get this done. And we will get it done." He also directly called out republicans by saying that's why we can't just say "drill baby drill", that we must have a comprehensive energy policy and fund alternatives. He mentioned investments in wind, solar and bio-diesel fuels. I don't know about you guys, but I'm glad that we've heard the President acknowledge in a national press conference that our way of life is changing. I doubt that the national news media will even follow up on this, however.

Press Conference going on right now with the President actually admitting that easily accessible oil is on the decline, and that we can "see the general direction that the oil industry is headed in"... WOW. I never thought that I would hear the government actually admit this...
  18. The Doan Building could be an attractive, historic element of the development if included- and would account for a number of potential apartments in the project if renovated. Virginia Benson is still at CSU- I wonder what her take is on tearing down this building... but anyways, it will be great to see construction on these lots.
  19. ^Absolutely, which is why I was actually in support of the deal before I found out that there were other companies willing to do the same. If the bid still goes to Sunpu-Opto, at least the reasoning will be transparent.
  20. Someone fill me in on how municipal financing could work... but we could potentially use the Casino for the funding of the reconfiguring of Public Square and possibly/probably The Mall. Would there be a way to get the financing and infill work done using the technology mentioned by KJP in the Warehouse District redevelopment thread (used tires) for the port's new land? This would not take care of the containment area needed for the dredging of the river, but could easily be used to move the port in a fraction of the time. We've got a financing tool which will be online (possibly with a "Phase One" this year?) and in place. Now for the region to get behind it...

Can't say we didn't see that coming... Phil Jackson?
  22. Just wanted to add something to this thread... Euclid between E. 55th and the E. 70s seems to be almost completely cleared on the north side of the street. I'm hoping to see some type of renderings or plans for the area within the near future. An updated plan for the district would be better... anyone have any clues about what's going on?
