Cleveland: Eaton Corporation News & Info
^One could only hope... what's crazy is that they are being offered more from the State to move to Beachwood than they were offered to stay in the city. Go figure.

Cleveland: Downtown Storefront Displays
^North Collinwood's own... JERRY SCHMIDT's work!!! I'll go by his sculpture garden on Waterloo one of these days coming up and take some updated photos. Thanks for the pic!

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
Thanks for the pics! The sealant looks to be a good choice for the exterior work on the frontal facade.

^That's good to know. But dammit, these demos are depressing.

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
I was wondering when the exterior frontal facade would be addressed on this building. As long as the job is done well, it might end up being really attractive. Anything is better than the state the building was in before.

^^Just to add, the Moriah building looks like the sinage on it's facade was done recently... along with the awnings. I wonder if the owners actually took it through the city's Storefront Renovation program and received city dollars for the exterior renovation. If it did, I wonder what the implications are for demolishing this building...

^It is a shame to hear that even more of Lorain is headed for demo. The "Historic District" title for the street does nothing to halt demolition. Maybe the title should be removed... because the street has lost much of it's historical fabric.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
^That's part of the reason why I believe locals have such a negative perception of the city. I myself am not a fan of the paper, nor do I support it.
-
Cleveland: Perception Issues
^Which is why this perception MUST be changed. Perception is 9/10s of reality to people who just have no clue about the city. Even locally, the perception suburbanites have on the city equates to dollars not spent here. If the nation looks at Cleveland negatively, I don't know if there would be an equation available to show how much the city loses out on.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
^I agree that the negative vibe which permeates from this city largely comes from the media's ongoing negative slant towards Cleveland. Which leads to less people wanting to live, work and experience the city over time. We've had 40 years of local negative press regarding the city. The negative local perception of the city is inbred.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
^I can agree... to an extent. Civic pride comes with the great things that a city is able to accomplish. Historically, we can refer to the Terminal Tower's completion as a time when people were proud to live in Cleveland, much more than today. Another example, in my opinion would be the civic pride the city experienced in the 90s, which came from many factors- including the RRHOF, The Flats, The Gund, Jacobs Field, and the Browns Stadium later. That's not to mention the other projects which occurred within the city during that time.

I agree. Using the Burke land doesn't make too much sense.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
^WOW. Well, that's more of a reason to keep it an airport, I guess. Correction- probably THE reason.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
The size issue might be why... isn't Dike 14 77 acres? I think the port is looking for 200 acres to operate.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
I agree COMPLETELY. But how do individuals locally begin to foster this type of movement? Not purchasing the PD and letting them know that you will not do so because of the constant negative reporting is one way. In fact, I have to admit that maybe, just maybe, they're beginning to get the picture. It's been a while since the last completely negative Cleveland story was on the front page, or in bold letters online. The marketing campeign, as MTS mentioned, is also important on a regional scale. I wonder why Positively Cleveland or the GCP has not done so. I would guess that Cleveland + is their answer, however, how effective is that towards changing Cleveland's perception to the nation?

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
^Many valid points made by Morrison. I think all of us here would like to see something done sooner rather than later regarding the port. I know I would. I personally HATE having to wait till 2035 for the whole plan to come to fruition- as much as I love this town, (and have been here my whole life), I don't know if I'll be living in Cleveland instead of another city that far in the future to actually appreciate it as a resident of the region.

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
^I agree to an extent, because the addition of a casino will likely draw people to downtown who haven't been downtown for anything for a very, very long time. For instance, the senior citizens who get on buses to go to Detroit and gamble there. I mean sure, they will still get on the bus at one point or another, but now some of those dollars will benefit the state.

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
Seems like the Times posts more positive stories happening in the city than The Plain Dealer. Go figure.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
^I would have to agree to an extent that our own local perception, which is generally "can't do", could be linked in part with the failure of our sports franchises to win within the last 40+ years (except for the Crunch!). Winning 6 Superbowls certainly doesn't hurt the psyche of a city- I would imagine that at least the local vibe/view of the city would be a bit more positive with that many championships, but again, that's just my opinion.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
^I wouldn't be suprised if some type of study showed that that is the case for many cities nationwide. We just haven't had that experience since the start of Cleveland's decline.

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
^Yeah, because bowling has everything to do with gambling... if you're a bowler, you have two choices when it's time to go out: Either go to the bowling alley, or the casino. Same for bars- you're not allowed to frequent both... if you want to go to the bar, then dammit, it has to be JUST the bar. Casinos aren't allowed.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
Using just the city statistics would slant Cleveland more towards underachievement when compared to other cities with more diverse socioeconomic demographics in their neighborhoods. Looking at the graph in the news article regarding Vegas, Cleveland is just slightly above Detroit when it comes to college graduates living within the city, and even those who have had only some college. But if Pittsburgh has neighborhoods which could resemble Cleveland Heights and Shaker, that would definitely help their numbers.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
All good points. I think the foreclosure crisis has helped push Cleveland into a negative light through the national media more so than most other cities in the Midwest, save Detroit. When the foreclosure crisis hit, people from all over the world descended on Cleveland to see how bad things got here- but didn't make it a big deal until some of the Sunbelt cities were seeing the same devastation in newer subdivisions. All we saw on TV was Slavic Village, how desolate it had become, and the destruction occurring there- all man made. Now many neighborhoods on the east side are becoming just as desolate- however, I don't know if the national perception of Cleveland is based solely on this alone. Could the perception of the city nationally be made more positive with an influx of college grads, as Pittsburgh has?
