Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
What I posted on the .bomb article... "@TMH: I agree with your sentiments about Cleveland. I'm not from Cleveland. I actually CHOSE to live here, and coming up on 10 years, I have no intention of ever leaving. However, that said, I find that very few of my friends, neighbors and readers - especially those actually FROM Cleveland - share that sentiment. Which is why the line, as much as you and I might dislike the fact, is entirely accurate. Anyway, thanks for reading, for reading so carefully, and for taking the time to write." Tony- I stopped purchasing The Plain Dealer for the very reason you state- and this is the same reason that I, and many other individuals, have ceased to support this publication. Snide remarks like the one you purposely put into this positive story about one of the region's best assets do nothing to help move the perception of this city forward to the local suburban public, or the nation. In fact, I am convinced that many readers BELIEVE the snide remarks inserted time and time again in what should be positive articles regarding the city. Hopefully, more readers will learn that The Plain Dealer does not care about the perception they put forth regarding the City of Cleveland. I thank you for clarifying this.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
^LOL! Somewhere else downtown, preferably on existing surface parking lots? Sure. But at that corner, for this ornate building? No can do.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
^Agreed. Tearing down this handsome building all in the name of "progress"... I'm looking forward to seeing the full restoration of this building!

Cleveland: Weston / Gilbane Warehouse District Plans
^Don't go throwing that W word around here! These plans look almost identical to Stark's vision. I wonder if this is an indicator that the project is being pushed again? With the Medical Mart and Convention Center a few years away, I was just wondering about this project just the other day. It seems like it would have more potential now than it had in 2007 before lending ceased.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
Sounds great! I need to see CSU's master plan for the campus again to see what will go in place of Viking Hall. The East 24th extension with shops and places to eat would be great for the area. Good to hear that there are 6 companies interested in developing part of the stretch that CSU owns between Chester and Payne. I would assume that a certain nationally known development company located a few blocks west wouldn't be interested...

Deconcentrating Public Housing By Forcing it in Affluent Neighborhoods...Yes/No?
I disagree. I'm speaking from experience. I would have to disagree as well. Shaker Heights, for example, has a number of Section 8 tenants. Kind of hard to believe, until one looks at the sociodemographic make-up of the Shaker Heights school district. On the one hand, these children will have a chance to go to a quality school district with resources which wouldn't be available to them in other areas. They will inherently, because of their location, have role models to look up to and will have a better chance at life than those in similar situations who live in Section 8 housing in the city, for example. Personally, I believe that this is the best quality of the Section 8 program- that children and teenagers have good role models who live around them and interact with them in their community. For some individuals who were fortunate enough to have some type of positive role model growing up, you may not know the full implications of what I'm saying. On the other hand, their parents have lucked out and are living in what was designed to be an exclusive city for the well-to-do (ignoring the original racial and ethnic biases)... for next to nothing. Additionally, parenting starts at home, and letting children run wild throughout the streets of any city will bring down the quality of life for surrounding residents. Unfortunately, this is not fair to some individuals who call Shaker home.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
^Point taken. We'll have to wait and see regarding any further hold outs.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
^The county won't let this project be held up by property owners who do not want to sell. The current county administration building would come down for the Medical Mart, and the County would find space elsewhere downtown.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Well, I'm sure you all know where I stand regarding the PD. Yes, the city has faults. However, I'm a believer in this city. Bringing up Erieview- is ancient history. Different times, different social structure, different everything. The Flats would be under construction right now if not for a couple hold-out property owners, followed by a collapse in the lending market. Saying that Euclid is a disaster does not point to all the positive growth occurring or that will occur on the street in the near future. Chris Warren stated there were 3 dozen projects planned for Euclid in Midtown- and I believe him. The street has too much potential to just let sit. The one point he is correct on, in my opinion, is the county debacle which occurred regarding the Breuer tower, and county leadership in general. County residents saw it happening first hand, and knew something shady was going on in the deal. We've known that Dimora was a crook- but what we didn't know was that the Feds were on to him and all of his friends. Thankfully, we'll see some type of justice for their wrongdoings.

^Again, winning this lawsuit would just show the nation how backwards this state can be, but this time, at the expense of Arizona. Great. I'm for secession. Off topic, different thread, I know.

The Future of America and Its Cities
Originally, people have left core, central areas because a decline in the quality of living of such places. Overcrowding and unsanitary conditions from the industrial revolution was the reason Cincinnatians literally started heading for the hills in the 1800's. This original sprawl was made possible by the streetcar and interurban systems. Those of the lower classes, mostly immigrants, often filled these voids because the conditions of the neighborhood made them cheap and affordable. It was this phenomenon that created the first ethnic (and sometimes religious) ghettos. Depending on the decade and immigration trends, the ethnicities varied....Irish, Italian, Jewish, Polish, Greek, etc. The same thing happened in the 20th Century. As the aforementioned ethnicities became further assimilated into the established society, new ethnicities began to take their places in these ghettos. The reasons were often the same...old, overcrowded, and dirty neighbors made for cheap living. However, not only did you have immigrants from different parts of the world coming to cities but migrants as well. African-Americans fled the south for the factory jobs in the north, as did those from rural Appalachia. There is no question that white-flight, based upon racism occurred, especially after WWII. Prior to that racism obviously did exist but the Great Depression economically prevented any large scale racially-based sprawl. The federal legislation passed during the Depression along with the post-war economic boom and highway construction coupled with racism allowed for an entirely new kind of sprawl. Thus was the birth of the modern-day suburb. So historically speaking, when talking about city development and growth you cannot take race and class out of the equation. But to say that removal of minorities from a city is good thing is completely preposterous. Very, very well said.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
^Don't know... maybe by the 2020 census... there's no denying we took a hit during these past ten years. Maybe we'll see a small rebound of sorts with that census.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I love the leadership the Mayor is showing on this front... http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2009/08/cleveland_mayor_frank_jackson_1.html Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson sets tone for summit by John Funk/Plain Dealer Reporter Wednesday August 12, 2009, 11:11 AM CLEVELAND -- On the first day of his sustainability summit, Mayor Frank Jackson made it clear what he believes is at stake for the city and the region. "It is not a question of if a sustainable economy will happen or even when it will happen," Jackson told the early-morning crowd of more than 700 at the Cleveland Convention Center. "The only question is who will be first. "That city will lead the way. For me, that city is Cleveland. The city will be positioned first." http://www.cleveland.com/news/index.ssf/2009/08/sustainability_summit.html Sustainability is the future of Cleveland, Mayor Frank Jackson says Posted by jmorona August 12, 2009 08:00AM CLEVELAND -- Sustainability is a word you will hear a lot about this week -- and probably for the next decade. "It's the future of Cleveland," Mayor Frank Jackson declared in an interview Tuesday about the first city-sponsored summit on the idea that the region can reinvent itself -- as some corporations have -- by emphasizing the "three P's." As in people, planet and profits, said Andrew Watterson, Jackson's sustainability director. "Sustainability is about the triple bottom line," he said in a recent interview. "It's good for employees and customers. It's good for the environment. And it's about making money." More at http://www.cleveland.com/news/index.ssf/2009/08/sustainability_summit.html
