Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
^Point taken (and a good one at that!). We all want to see this city succeed. We all want the best options for future residents and businesses along the Corridor. However, my biggest fear about the developments under scrutiny (by us) is that they will hinder the future growth of the area. With the investment put in by the taxpayers into this corridor, it should be able to be enjoyed by all, and not just the affluent. But will these developments stifle future developments that have not even come to the table for the corridor yet? I guess only time will tell.

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
^Yes, there is an abundance of low income housing around this area, which is why we are so heated over this decision. Why the FRACK put this on Euclid? The same Euclid we just spent $400 million tax dollars on? The same Euclid with so much potential, including in Midtown? I hate this.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
I don't know if I see this as a bad thing... yet. The county has said that they would not let a single property owner hold up this important project, while recently the county has been shopping for office space. I believe the county is asking for 300,000+ sqft in 2011, leading to one of two things: the construction of a new office building for the county (probably unlikely), or the county moving to an available office building with that much available space (sorry to get off topic). Either way it goes, I don't see the county letting this project go. It fits too perfectly into the direction the region is headed, and we need it.

Unfortunately, though I have never witnessed racial violence in Little Italy first hand, it wouldn't suprise me. To this day, I personally have never set foot in that neighborhood, mainly because of the racial stigma towards African Americans that the neighborhood carries.

Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
vpoole- Has the group you were a part of approached any city leaders about your concept? How probable is it that it would come to fruition, one day?

Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
The Galleria location would be about twice as large. I wonder if public funds would be sought after with this location, as with the powerhouse? MTS- I would think this town could support both a boutique aquarium and larger aquarium on both sides of downtown. Having two aquariums could boost interest in the development of our lakefront, along with drawing further interest to our largest asset as a region.

^This is a great move by the City. Though the lots are not being redeveloped (which I'm sure most people would would prefer), our city is becoming greener through this crisis. I seen nothing but positives in regards to these grants.

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
Yep, Virginia Benson, CSU's own, said about three years ago that the building would be coming down. I agree with StrapHanger- the street-wall on that side of Euclid was demolished long ago for what ended up being the fortress-like CSU. Having the building there is great, however the new arts center was proposed for that exact spot (which could do a lot for that stretch of Euclid).

This would be GREAT for projects which have stalled downtown, along with others throughout the city! This is a great move by the Mayor.

This will be great for the street. It's good to see the success of East 4th make other parts of the city want an upgrade.

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
Got my reply from Bob Brown... Dear Oldmanladyluck: Thank you for writing about the future of Euclid Avenue in Midtown. The City continues to support the vision for mixed-use development with technology and bio-medical uses, complemented by pedestrian-oriented/transit-oriented housing and retail. We believe that the proposed developments can contribute to that vision, particularly if the buildings are properly designed and sited to promote pedestrian activity and transit use. All of the proposed uses are relatively high-density uses. The mental health hospital will bring hundreds of new employees to this portion of Euclid Avenue – employees and visitors who can use the transit line and patronize restaurants and stores. Also, significant amounts of vacant and underutilized land and buildings will remain open for development and re-use along this portion of Euclid Avenue . The City is committed to working with Midtown Cleveland and others to facilitate development and uses that are consistent with the Midtown plan. Please feel free to get back to me if you have further questions. Robert N. Brown, Director Cleveland City Planning Commission [email protected] Tel: 216-664-3467 Fax: 216-664-3281 Web Site: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
^The shopping plazas along Lakeshore are definitely hurting, and Lakeshore definitely needs attention. That Big Lots has been closed for maybe 10 years now. Hopefully the recreation center planned for the space comes to fruition soon. The whole area around Euclid Beach was poorly planned- the suburban shopping center caters mainly to the large population of elderly residents who live in the high-rises directly adjacent to Euclid Beach, along with the trailer park which is on the other side of the Beach. Additionally, residents directly west of the shopping center up to the Bratenahl border shop there (though many of the residents in the neighborhood use E. 185th for their needs). As many of these individuals are on lower or fixed incomes, not many establishments have chosen the shopping centers on this strip as a location. There was a masterplan done for the area around 2004 during the initial Lakefront Plan process (North Collinwood was left out of this plan, though it is one of maybe two or three neighborhoods with residential housing units fronting the lake). The masterplan called for mixed use development along Lakeshore where the large shopping center is. It would be nice to one day see this section of Lakeshore with mixed-use buildings fronting the street, however that's probably a long ways away.

327- I share your enthusiasm for Midtown (I guess I'm insane too!). I emailed Krumholz as soon as I learned about these two developments. He thanked me for the email and recommended that I contact Rob Brown and Tony Coyne and voice my concerns. Bob Brown's email is: Bob Brown, Director of the Planning Dept. [email protected] Tony Coyne's email is harder to come by... if someone has it, post it!

Cleveland: Population Trends
I must agree that parental guidance is a major part of the problem that the city faces. The lack of parental guidance, or specifically, positive role models is in part what perpetuates (in my opinion) the culture of poverty. This same culture of poverty is a major deterrent to individuals and families who would like to relocate back to the city.

Cleveland: Population Trends
8ShadesofGray- That is a great synopsis of the estimated numbers. Of course, trashing suburbs like Shaker, South Euclid, Lakewood, and Cleveland Heights isn't as sexy as trashing the city on a consistent basis.
