Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
I have not been supportive of the Plain Dealer since the "Quiet Crisis" series. The paper really has done very little in regards to letting the unknowing local-public know of the positive changes in the Cleveland economy. Besides the "regionalism" debate, I challenge anyone to bring up one positive dialogue the paper began which actually benefited the region within the last ten years. The publication, in my opinion, has little worth to the region; in fact, if the Plain Dealer were to go out of business tomorrow, I personally wouldn't give a Sh!t and would actually be happy (though I would feel bad for the workers). I've thought about what it would take to start a newspaper which had a different focus than what the PD has. I've let people know over and over again- that if you keep telling a child that the child is ugly, over and over, the child will start believing that he or she is ugly. Look at the local regional public of Cleveland- which has been told for YEARS by this news publication that the City of Cleveland is: fat, overweight, crime-ridden, decaying, declining in population, polluted, and corrupt among other things. This explains the ignorance of the majority of individuals who post at the .bomb site. It's time for a daily publication in this town that does not just focus on the negatives constantly, one that can change the negative views of locals on the mother-city, one that can start constructive dialogues which will benefit the region. The PD is not this paper.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
As soon as I heard "horse track", I turned the thing off. Dammit... Scaravelli proposed turning the Scranton Penninsula into 6 islands, if I recall, with housing on them, along with believing he could net $100 million with the project. He offered Forest City $50 million for the property and the Higbee building, but they didn't bite (thank God). As much as I don't care for Forest City, I can not imagine what would have happened to that land if it was sold to this guy.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Earlier in this thread, my disgust was primarily towards the City for "letting" this development slip through their fingers. Well, it looks like losing Eaton will not be a bad thing for Cleveland, and that some of our most precious land will be developed in a more suitable way in the future. Eaton will have stunning views of a freeway at their new campus in Beachwood instead of the Cuyahoga River. Instead of eating at some of the region's best and well known restaurants, along with enjoying a plethora of things this city has to offer downtown, visitors will be treated to Red Lobster and Bahama Breeze. What an about face for a long-time Cleveland company. I'm with KJP, losing them is not such a bad thing after all.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
This is the type of game the city has been waiting for!! The Browns shut up every commentator who predicted a Giants win. Great game!! One thing that worries me is the amount of penalties the Browns commit every game. This game had 7 false starts committed by the Browns... which is unacceptable. The team has to fix this problem as they will be playing with more confidence than ever for the rest of the season. I can say that I am definitely expecting more wins like this during this season!! GO BROWNS!! :drunk:

Cleveland: Port Authority News & Info
We discussed the topic of the Port relocation in Krumholz's class last week, and he said that the 88 acre Dike 14 was planned for when he was city planner. That was over THIRTY years ago, and Dike 14 just recently was filled. That puts into context how long 200+ acres for the Port will take to fill. This is an extremely long term plan by the Port, and will be done in phases. I expected for the whole thing to be done in 20 years, but that ain't gonna happen.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
^And that shortfall has yet to be allocated for. The mayor of Pepper Pike was in attendance, and wanted everyone to keep the big picture in mind of the fact that manufacturing ain't coming back anytime soon and that the town's medical sector is the future. However, someone noted that a $136 million shortfall is not a small point to ignore, as is the site selection. Great forum though.

I will be there... we have a paper due in his class next week on the same subject (I will post the findings of the forum later)

Beachwood: New Eaton Headquarters
I can honestly say that the mayor has had my support until this announced move. It is clear that there was leadership missing, which is the leadership that the citizens of the city elect the mayor to hold.

Cleveland: Downtown: May Company Building
They couldn't help but start the article with negativity towards the city, could they? AHH!! Ok, I'm done. Cadillac Ranch bringing a maze of entertainment to burgeoning Euclid Ave. Yes, there is life on Euclid Avenue. Finally. The Euclid Corridor project has turned the heart of the city into a collapsed artery -- lined with empty storefronts, darkened windows and dust, dust, dust. Cadillac Ranch is fixin' to change that. Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
I'm not a fan of that big blank brick wall on 668. Hopefully something gets put on there... otherwise, I love the whole project.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
There's always the next election cycle...

Cleveland: Rockometer Proposal
Maybe the effort has raised enough attention that the city has seen plans for something bigger and better (just wishful thinking) :)
-
Cleveland: Whiskey Island Coast Guard Station Redevelopment
^Robert Brown was in Norman Krumholz class in Urban Planning last night and basically said the same thing. He didn't name any specific university that would undertake the venture though.

Beachwood: New Eaton Headquarters
I was thinking the same thing, wondering when Jacobs (blech!!) would step up and dell them the Public Square tower, but he will probably be developing their home in Beachwood anyways. Forest City? Probably to preoccupied with trying to get even more of the county's tax dollars :) Based on the comments from the execs earlier about being "committed" to Cleveland, I really think this whole deal has to do with the top exec's retirement accounts, and nothing more. So we'll have around 600 less people downtown... hopefully they will be replaced by people that actually want to spend time in the city.
-
Beachwood: New Eaton Headquarters
^Sounds good to me. Knowing that my city is being held hostage, I can agree there are other pressing issues... so what else can the city do besides allow for the top executives of Eaton to have their retirement packages exempt from city taxes? $25 million in tax incentives obviously wasn't enough for them, and allowing the tax exemption to occur will spell trouble for the city the next time a large company contemplates moving; I hate that we are in this situation...
-
Beachwood: New Eaton Headquarters
^Good call. Eaton does not necessarily HAVE to be in the FEB, and there are other areas downtown available.
-
Beachwood: New Eaton Headquarters
SHAME on Eaton's top executives on trying to hold the City of Cleveland hostage just so they can keep their retirement packages tax free. I don't care how one tries to spell it out, this is the main reason why Eaton is threatening to move to the suburbs (on top of shorter commute times for the top executives, no doubt, but that is another issue dealt with in many cities nationwide). Is it worth it for the City of Cleveland to grant the top execs tax exemption? As has been stated before, if this is done, we will see a repeat of this same scenario over and over again. Though it might make major cities in Ohio competitive on some level in the long term, in the short-term this law does nothing for our cities that are bleeding jobs left and right. As a person who cares about the future of this city, the possible (maybe probable) move of Eaton hurts. Bad.

Oldmanladyluck replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Northeast Ohio Projects & Construction^I would hope so... I just hope that the individuals who are employed there are able to find other work.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
I see that National City was bathed in pink again... I have to say that I like it in that color better!!
-
Cleveland: Rockometer Proposal
I like the concept, and since this is the first set of renderings for the project, I won't be too harsh on it. But I would hope that the developer is not planning on adding parking to our lakefront.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
^Great article, which ended on a positive note. No need for negativity on one of the region's bright spots.
