Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
The Planning Commissioners approved the existing site of the convention center back in 2004 for a new convention center. This is what happens when people with money begin making civic decisions (Tower City site) when compared to people that have been in the planning field for years (Existing site). The Planning Commission's site planning will once again be made null and void by the County Commissioner's decisions. Sound familiar (Breuer Tower)?

Another "list"... Two Ohio big cities make poverty Top 10
I truly feel your pain. I truly do. I really dislike the PD and their constant never-ending bashing of our city. I agree that this is not news (C-Town has been near the top of the list for years before we actually hit #1), but how do we collectively address the issue of poverty in our city? No single program will do it, and poverty will not magically decreased overnight, even with the mayor's initiatives (especially since part of the main reason for our city's poverty status is the decades loss of manufacturing jobs in the region). The truth of the matter is, a large portion of the population of our city is either: 1) Undereducated 2) From lead-based paint homes 3) Near brownfield sites 4) From single-parent households 5) Have no positive male role-models. 6) From a home where one or more role models were on drugs 7) Were physically or mentally abused 8 ) Etc. How does a city deal with all of these factors? The $1 million in college scholarships to Tri-C are a start, but we all know that most "good" jobs require at least a four year degree. How much of our young population is willing to wait that long, especially when our youths believe money can be made on the street so easily? These problems need a real solution, which is something that our news media have completely forgotten about. We all know the story, but we need to develop a real solution.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Here's my take on the whole situation- It cannot be denied that RTA is the most widely used transit system in the region, and also the most important to the region as a whole. In my own personal opinion, without RTA, the region would fail. Many more families and individuals use RTA than the outlying counties respective transit systems to reach the region's centers of employment. Some of the individuals who live in Medina County CHOSE to live there to get away from the big, bad, inner-ring suburbs where "those" people are, while others CHOSE to live there when gas was affordable, and never even dreamed of taking public transportation.. The individuals who CHOSE to move to the outlying counties are now paying the price, literally. Until we have a true, multi-county region-wide transportation system, we cannot let needed funding to one of our region's most important assets go to the wayside because of a few exubanites who can't afford gas because of their lifestyle. I know I'm being selfish, but if these outlying counties are willing to lose the routes which RTA serves (which Cuyahoga County subsidizes) and rely completely on their own systems, then maybe a discussion should be had about funding. However, what does this do for regional cooperation? What does this do for the individuals who made the unfortunate decision to move miles and miles away from their employment, and now need one of Cuyahoga County's services? We know the answers to these questions. I'm with KJP on this though, for what purpose was NOACA holding on to these monies for? What other funds does NOACA have that can be tapped to help our transit systems?

It does not, which would have actually made it more expensive than the current site.

Cleveland: Downtown: May Company Building
I agree. I'm definitely not mad about reinvestment happening in that building, and like what's been stated before- downtown needs venues like this to attract the average suburbanite who might not know about what downtown has to offer. The more people we get coming downtown, suburban or not, the more reinvestment will follow. I'll hold off final judgment of this new establishment until I learn more about it, but as of right now, it looks ok to me.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Ok, so we finally have a site recommended. I really hope that this leads Forest City to finally developing the Scranton Peninsula. In my opinion, conventioners will have a not-so-good impression of the center of our city when they look across the river at a barren patch of land that should have been developed long ago. We've thrown Forest City enough bones over the years, and it's time that they develop that site. On the other hand, I look forward to the creative reuse of the current convention site. I am sure that with the right push on the county and mayor, the city will come up with a great plan for the current site.

Forbes: America's Fastest Dying Cities
The number of people leaving the region does not supprise me, as during the last recession the region lost 80,000 manufacturing jobs. These jobs haven't been replaced as quickly as they left. I just hate how the regional public loves to eat this sh%t up.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Once again, the cost of buying the site behind TC, either w/ air rights or an actual purchase by the county, has been left out of the equation. The cost of the purchase should DEFINITELY be taken into account. Remember when developer Scaravelli (sp?) wanted to buy Forest City's land in the Scranton Penninsula, directly across the river from the proposed convention center for $50 Million? That was a no go.

Forbes: America's Fastest Dying Cities
Sure, we UOers know better, but to the larger regional public, this is just another reason to "avoid" Cle-town (and I would bet that the PD picks up on this and publishes it tomorrow, front page).

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Ok, so it's going to Tower City, as a lot of us expected but few of us wanted. I hope this spurs great ideas about what to do with the existing site.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
^I couldn't agree more. When I read that part, I had the same reaction. No need to b!tch if someone lives that far from their employment; I'm sure that this person CHOSE to live in Brunstucky when gas was cheap. Oh well.
