  1. Medical conventions are not the only conventions this will be for. The merchandise mart is specifically for the medical trade, however, the "new" convention center would be multipurpose as is the current convention center and IX center. Oldmanladyluck's question, tell me that many, many people have no idea what a "merchandise mart" is. No, I understand what the company does (even more so after that post!!). From their site..."MPI is one of the largest trade and consumer show producers in North America. Each year, we mount more than 300 trade and consumer shows, conventions, conferences, educational programs and special events that bring buyers and sellers together". Looks good to me.
  2. I don't know how to feel about this right now... I was hoping that they would have made a decision by now and announced it since we are about half way through the 60 day timeline for action. Can we trust MMPI to run the site? I know that they run 300 trade shows a year... but giving them management over the property (I'm thinking Tower City's history as a lesson for the city)? On top of that, are medical conventions the only conventions that the city should be holding? What about other conventions? Will MMPI know how to manage those as well? I just don't know...
  3. The city CAN NOT let eaton just build a corporate campus that could fit into any suburb along the city's prime lakefront. That just can't happen. I'm with you... count me in if a suburban-like campus makes it past the planning commission. I don't know if this was posted yet, but there are newer renderings of the Flats East Bank on Forum Architects website... http://www.forumarc.com/portfolio/flatseastbank/feb1.html
  4. ^^Probably won't, however it would be nice if they did.
  5. Wouldn't it be something if Geico moves downtown while Progressive is in the suburbs? That would be kind of ironic to me.

^^Ditto. Our leaders need not worry about these things right now.
  7. "Oh, Cleveland's economy is poor" and "oh, one of the poorest cities in the nation". Meanwhile, buried deep within the PD as to not catch too much attention... Employers say they plan to hire workers, increase pay Posted by Alison Grant January 30, 2008 17:45PM Categories: Workplace ......
  8. This part of EC is "up the hill", near Forest Hills. When I was younger, I thought that was part of Cleveland Heights. That part of EC is beautiful.
  9. ^^We're all hoping that it is sooner rather than later!! But it ain't over till it's over. We;ll have to wait and see what Stark does and not get too judgmental about the FEB project.
  10. ^^I know, that's why I couldn't find just where this article would fit the best. Since it deals with the new economy, it could go there.
  11. I could not find an appropriate thread for this story, so I decided to start a new thread. Mods, don't tase me. Better-paying jobs gaining ground in Northeast Ohio by Tom Breckenridge Thursday January 24, 2008, 11:30 AM FACTORY JOBS ARE DISAPPEARING ... ... BUT MANY NEW JOBS PAY MORE [ftp][/ftp] Many once-powerful factories in Northeast Ohio still sit silent, their burly workers gone years ago. But a future built on higher-paying jobs like health care and education is emerging. The latest evidence will be released today: a study concluding that higher-paying jobs actually are growing faster than lower-paying ones... http://blog.cleveland.com/business/2008/01/24FGJOBS.pdf
  12. ^^We'll see. I sure am hoping that all these projects come to fruition. It would be a shame if Stark's project does not pan out because of the market... what he is planning is HUGE for Cleveland, and if the stars align just right, we might be able to see all the major projects announced built. We'll just have to wait it out, and hope that the developers are able to make the numbers work.
  13. This. Is. Another. Lifestyle. Center. Bah!!
  14. Can't wait to see this one completed!!
  15. The planning commission was put between a rock and a hard place with this situation (first time I've actually used that saying :-D), in that the commissioners could move forward with the demolition even without the planning commission's approval (which the you-know-which-two commissioners planned to do). I believe the decision to remove the tower was made by the commission to in a way 'save face', in that it is one of the oldest planning commissions in the country and it would be a shame if their opinon and judgement of city projects could be discarded so easily.
  16. I believe that any plans must go through the city planning commission. One can only hope that they are all in tune to Cleveland's issues and would not want the density on Euclid to decrease.
  17.   I'm so glad that K&D were the only company to bid!! I'm still in somewhat of a disbelief- we are going to get NEW residential, along with keeping the tower? This is great!! To make sure this never happens again, voters, PLEASE get Hagen and Dimora out of office!!

A task that is becomming harder to do by the day... http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/2008-01-15-372164343_x.htm Bush: OPEC nations should pump more oil By TERENCE HUNT and ANNE GEARAN, Associated Press Writers 1 hour, 37 minutes ago RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - President Bush urged OPEC nations on Tuesday to put more oil on the world market and warned that soaring prices could cause an economic slowdown in the United States. "High energy prices can damage consuming economies," the president told a small group of reporters traveling with him in the Mideast. "It's affected our families. Paying more for gasoline hurts some of the American families, and I'll make that clear to him," said Bush, heading into more talks with Saudi King Abdullah. Shortly after Bush spoke, the Saudi oil minister said the kingdom, responsible for almost one-third of the cartel's total output, would raise oil production when the market justified it.
  19. I hope, really really hope, that they do NOT give the property back to Jacobs. That would be one sorry end to this saga.
  20. Dammit that buiding is beautiful!! As a Clevelander my whole life, I'm sure that I'm not the only one that has to smile when I see the progress on that building!! It just brings a smile to your face when you see how beautiful the restoration is. The night lighting of just that section is gorgeous as well. I have to add that it would be great for the whole tower to look like the upper floors. However, that restoration process would take years to complete, considering Forest City has a five year timeline for just the restoration of the upper 18 floors.
  21. The ethnic background of North Collinwood is varied, but does not really include Latinos. There's Croatians, Slovics, Germans, Lithuanians, and African-Americans in the neighborhood, but not enough of a Latino population to support Spanish speaking movies. That is a great idea though...
  22. Hey all... On December 3, the LaSalle Theater went to Sheriff's Sale. As a result of the foreclosure sale, the property is now in the hands of their lender. We are very excited and optimistic that this is the beginning of a new LaSalle Theater. The lender has already contacted Northeast Shores to discuss our interest in the property. On the one hand, this building is a major architectural feature on East 185th Street. This property is a significant feature in this vital commercial district. On the other hand, the building has serious deferred maintenance that needs to be addressed. Also, a one-screen movie theater with no parking lot is a tough structure to rent. So, Northeast Shores needs your advice! What do we do with the LaSalle Theater? We are asking specifically about the theater space. The rest of the building is obvious. Rehab the storefronts and rent them to good businesses. Rehab the upstairs apartments and rent them to great neighbors. But, what do we do with the theater space? We would like to hear your comments and suggestions. Please note that all the seats are removed. The floor is sloped. The stage has little depth, so using it as a performance stage is limited. And oh yeah, putting the seats back in, selling popcorn, and showing first-run movies is not an option! We have already spoken to several theater operators and one-screen theaters are considered obsolete dinosaurs. No one that can get access to first-run movies is interested in having the opportunity to show "I am Legend" at the LaSalle Theater tonight. So, be creative! Actually, be really creative! We need a really good idea or that theater will continue to stay dark when it has the potential to be a real anchor for the street. Also, visit the blog at http://northeastshores.blogspot.com/ to see what else is going on in the neighborhood!! I'll be adding more pics later.
  23. So true... bunch of Feaglers
  24. ^^When I read about Eaton not going into Stark's development, I was thinking that they might have went with Jacobs... but the East Bank is going to be a nice project as well. It's great to have these developers competing in our city!!
