Cincinnati: OTR: North Main Street Discussion
Thanks for asking the question for me. It's been too busy to get sucked into the UrbanOhio vortex for hours.

Cincinnati: Findlay Market
beachkbk replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentOne shop keeper mentioned that he once hoped that there would be a sign on I-75 like the ones showing the exit for the ballpark. This will be much better advertising than that.

Cincinnati Canal Discussion
I was looking at the SCPA website, and it looks like they may have thought of this before us. Here's their current rendering: <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/beachkbk/TheAdventuresOfCincinnatiFinn/photo?authkey=v-wv_QIE-xQ#5236061668342511842"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/beachkbk/SKo6WHOYOOI/AAAAAAAAB4k/6dSrrmn0H_k/s288/kayak.jpg" /></a>

Cincinnati Canal Discussion
People seemed very happy to see the "stinking" canal go when it did. If it would have to be flowing to prevent stench and mosquitoes, why not high speed flow with a kayak course down the middle of the parkway?

The area doesn't seem to be declining anymore. Good choice to stay ETC.

Cincinnati: OTR - City Home Project
There is the American building which is a 15-20 story tower, not that what's left is affordable. I like the look of Central Parkway in older pictures where the buildings fronting Central Parkway created a wall of buildings that were generally taller than those in OTR. The surface lot at Main and Cetnral Parkway or the Salvation Army buildign would be nice places for that tower.

Cincy - Hidden History
My understanding is that the tours are put on by the Cincinnati Museum Center's Heritage Program http://www.cincymuseum.org/information_center/programs_events/adult_programs/heritage.asp According to Wikipedia (for what that's worth) they have already done the one tour for 2008. Look for another in April 2009.

Cincinnati: OTR - City Home Project
When I read: "City Home, which has landed roughly $6.8 million in financing from 3CDC, will help extend the reach of the revitalization efforts in the quarter from Central Parkway to 15th Street." I thought that meant financing in the same way I financed buying my home, a loan. I didn't realize that 3CDC gives grants. Thanks for the info

NFL: General News & Discussion
Green Bay got a 4th round draft pick. 3rd if he plays 70% of the snaps, 2nd if the jets make the playoffs and a 1st if they make the superbowl. As a Wisconsinite, I'm sorry he left, but I'm glad the drama is over (for now).

Cincinnati: OTR - City Home Project
First, the idea of an integrated neighborhood that fills in empty space is exciting. I just wonder how how people make these project economically feasible. By the numbers published in the article ($7million plan, 22 homes) there is an average cost of $318,000 per house. They plan on selling for $100,000 (5 homes) to $300,000+. I would think that either the '+' is very big or they don't plan to make money. I'm glad that they are doing this and it looks nice, but every time I do the basic math on projects, they don't seem to add up. Can someone explain how it works to me?

Cincy - Hidden History
I have found many of these old markers around town. The name may be different, but the address of 13 McMicken Ave is always the same. <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/beachkbk/TheAdventuresOfCincinnatiFinn/photo?authkey=v-wv_QIE-xQ#5230167930400138626"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/beachkbk/SJVKBacj5YI/AAAAAAAAB30/qupPEDbpv8Q/s400/%27wisconsin%20070.jpg" /></a>

Madison, WI: One of the Midwest's most beautiful cities
I grew up in Madison and loved it. Undoubtedly this is the worst time of year with the snow melting and leaving the dirt and trash behind. The students trash everything. Make sure to update the photos after classes end and all the contents of the apartments including furniture is just thrown onto the curb. After that it gets beautiful again.

Cincy - Hidden History
This used to be the ad agency that my wife worked for. They were bought out and moved up to Blue Ash. I'm sure that new building is just as nice and full of history.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
I've seen all the discussion on the OTR oval stickers and thought I could repost the link. A while ago I saw people might want them and took two seconds and created it on cafe press. I don't add a fee for me or make any money from this. If you'd like one, you can get one <a href="http://www.cafepress.com/over_the_rhine">here</a>. EDIT: changed link.

Columbus Blue Jackets Discussion
7 points and 4 teams back from the playoffs. 10 games left. I had big hopes and there were big improvements, but it looks like they'll fall short again. There is always next year.

Cincinnati: Urban Grocery Stores
^ I lived in Buckhead for a year. I had a very different experience than described by Wikipedia. Of course that was available if you had the money for it. Mostly there was a big mall, chain restaurants, clubs and a Rooms-to-Go. It felt like a dense suburb with a MARTA line. Our grocery store choices were the A&P or the Harris Teeter. Both had standard suburrb design with massive parking lot.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: School for the Creative & Performing Arts
We were told that it was. I guess that was wrong. If Rothenberg is also demolished, where would kids go to school?
-
Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: School for the Creative & Performing Arts
The fact that it will be the elementry school for downtown and OTR residents will be a big incentive for parents to come downtown or for YPs to not leave once they have a kid.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
In the summer with our windows open, the buses are unbelievably loud. I would gladly trade several street cars for a bus.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
In our building, the number of people who lived outside of Cincinnati and moved here directly to downtown is about 50%. I think that a large number of people powering the heart of the regrowth (by that i mean buying the houses and living downtown) are from outside where streetcars and urban life is more common and less vilified. They especially don't know or care about WLW. In Europe, where we lived last year, most street cars are paid for on the honor system. They have cops on cars, on occasion, checking for tickets and if you don't have one it it a huge fine (50-75 euros). If enforcement is strong early, the reputation may allow a similar system to work here.

Columbus Blue Jackets Discussion
I got to see a period of the aves game, which is unusual since I don't have cable. I was impressed with how the BJs played. They seem much faster and have a sense of attack that wasn't there in the past. In past years they seems to be holding off the loss as opposed to reaching for a win. It's exciting.
