Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
Update: It looks like 23 E 13th was not torn down. In fact it is now for sale as part of a bundle with 1227 Jackson St and 35 E. Thirteenth. The Jackson St and 23 E 13th locations were renovated and 35 E 13th is a two building combo with both the Deutche Gegenseitige Derlicherungs - Gesellschaft von Cincinnati and the Stafford. These two are beautiful buildings that are not remodeled yet. They are all for sale as part of a package for $1.6M. I'm not sure any one will fork that kind of money over for a half completed set of buildings, but at least they're not yet gone forever.

The Blue Wisp's new management could relocate there. That would be a great spot to catch the business/covention crowds.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Lawyers Title Building Renovation
We used to live in Atlanta and Virginia Highlands was our favorite place. The Q is becoming similar and will get there as mass builds in the area. I think what downtown needs is a bedand breakfast (other than the one over by music hall). I know of a couple buildings that would be great for it. They have a good retail space on the first floor and a separate entrance to the upper floor for direct after hours room access. One was on the market and I had talked to developers who said that making it a business would require ADA compliance including an elevator. That would push remodeling costs well beyond the feasibility point. The state of Ohio doesn't help when it forces all hotels who have 6+ rooms to pay the same fees. The break even point for rooms for B&Bs tends to be closer to 10. That may explain why most downtown weddings choose to stay in B&Bs in NKY instead. It's a growing market, especially because guests of the condo owners have to stay somewhere. I think the Q has it right. People moving in need furnishings and decor. Remember, during the gold rush the guy selling picks and shovels made the most.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Lawyers Title Building Renovation
I really hope that someone, especially a company like Urban Sites that has done some very cool projects, can come up with better ideas than condos. It seems everyone with more money than originality is following the herd and building condos in old buildings. At some point the people living in the 100+ condos per year from C3DC and the 300 in phase one of the banks are going to want to do something other than eat at a restautant. Hopefully a beautiful space like this can become something special.

It is actualy the American anti-germanism. There is a sign at Findlay market about the reaction to WWI in Cincinnati when the german language schools were removed and the German-based street names in OTR were changed.

Cincinnati: Downtown: 84.51°
It seems that Western and Southern seem to slow down development, even their own. They were part of the group that filed the delay for The Banks after the increase in density was approved. However they also seem to be realists in the end. They know that having development rights to one of the most sought after spaces in the CBD in valuable. If they delay too much they will lose the rights and that which would cost them significantly. They'll go forward after they've pressured the city for as much help (read money) as they can. The city would be advised to not extend the development rights too long and put the pressure back on them. Unlike the Banks, this space would be developed quickly if the current agreement fell through.

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
beachkbk replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentThe Friendly restaurant actually changed their name to Friendly's because everyone called it that anyway. My wife's grandma is a grammatical holdout and calls it The Friendly still.

I can't see 12th St at all in that photo. The northern half of the Gateway condo location looks like a grey blob that could be about anything. I do see the mish-mash that is likely cars parked there though. Anyway, these old photos are always great to look at. Thanks.

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
Now they should unload one of the big sluggers in the outfield and build the team around small ball and speed backed up by a better bullpen. It' definitely too early to talk rosters, but c: Ross 1: Cantu 2: Phillips 3: Encarnacion (?) ss: Gonzalez of: Hopper of: Hamilton of: Griffey

Covington, KY: The Ascent at Roebling's Bridge
Riverfront high-rise opening delayed BY JOE WESSELS | POST STAFF REPORTER Failures during testing of the windows in the upscale Ascent at Roebling's Bridge high-rise in Covington, combined with a manpower shortage, have delayed the riverfront development's expected opening. "They had some problems early on with leakage," said Jeff Bechtold, a Northern Kentucky Area Planning Association senior building official. "That's a typical application you have to test." Brian Sims, also a senior building official with the planning association, worked as a plan reviewer on the project. He said there were problems early on with the windows leaking, but they have been repaired. "It got out of hand, but once you caulk and seal them it was fixed," he said. Officials with developer Corporex Cos. LLC acknowledged there have been some problems uncovered during standard testing, but say they have been corrected and there will be no problems once the structure is completed. Corporex is developing the $55 million, 22-story condominium building at the foot of the Suspension Bridge. Its sweeping, glass-enclosed design was done by high-profile architect Daniel Libeskind, the architect who designed the replacement for the World Trade Center in New York City. Cincinnati: Arts News & Discussion
On a separate note, tonight the line of cars waiting to enter the parking garage across Central Parkway from Music Hall once again backed up onto Ezzard Charles. Just a comment: it would be nice to have better flow control during event nights or alternate parking.

I am an admittedly bad singer but enjoy singing Christmas carols. I'd love to get together and wander the streets singing sometime during the Holidays. Anyone interested in joining?

ahhh...the danger of the written word. it can be a poor communicator or sarcasm or facetiousness. anyway, I'll start calling it the theater district whether or not others jump on board.
-
Cincinnati: Arts News & Discussion
What is the danger? I don't follow. An entertainment district that brings in revenue and economic growth sounds like something that should be wanted.

Cincinnati: Arts News & Discussion
I read a couple months back in CityBeat, I think, of the growing theater district along 12th St. I thought that the term may catch on, but it seems there has been no traction. Given that the New Stage Collective, Ensemble Theater, Know Theater, Music Hall and the closed Emery Theater are all within a block of 12th: Is 12th St. worthy of being marketed as the "Theater district"?

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: School for the Creative & Performing Arts
I get that most people (including me) like to talk about what should be rather than what is. It is easy to change the should be, and very hard to change what is. However, the only options that impact the real world are: 1. Call for a halt in construction and have a hole there for ten years until agreement can be reached (think The Banks). 2. Acknowledge the design is subpar and should have had split focus to both Central Parkway and Washington Park, but move on, working to prevent future developments from making the same mistake.

Cincinnati: OTR: North Main Street Discussion
Probably years of drinking experience. They bring a belief that they can make it work. Right now, that seems different. Supporting what Rando said, I've lived a block from Main St for nearly 3 years and have never gone there. I do go to Rhino's and Lucy Blue though. They seem more neighborhood and less destination club to me.

Since I don't have cable and no radio station carries the games in Cincinnati, I listened to the game on the internet. Nash is a stud.

beachkbk replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentJean Robert had Pho Paris. It closed, n'est-ce pas? Not everything he touches turns to gold. Although, almost everything does. Pigall's is nearly the best restaurant I've ever been to. I'm eagerly looking forward to his OTR openings.

Cincinnati: What's next?
^ when I lived in Middletown I thought that using their relatively big airport for FedEx (or similar) service northern Cincy and south dayton made sense except for the relative inaccessability of the airport from I-75. Throwing in a few RJ-sized flights a day wouldn't hurt either. Comair seems to hit every small market except for Butler/Warren counties.
