  1. Cancel and tell her to go to www.coupons.com ETA: One thing I notice suburbanites and outer county residents fail to realize is that any negative image of Cleveland proper is, it hurts the ENTIRE REGION. Thanks, I will have to check that site out and I couldn't agree with you more about the negative image. It makes no sense to me why anyone would want the center of the region to be reflected poorly upon.

^Yeah...the turnovers were a killer and there is no exuse for poor free throw shooting! :whip:
  3. As a young person (I'm 27) who grew up in Mentor and am now living in Lyndhurst, I constantly hear from friends who read the PD and think because of what they read the city and region are headed nowhere, so they decide to move elsewhere. For the most part they are intelligent people with college degrees, but the PD is their source of information and don't really care to look into anything further. It's because of this that the PD has such a profound effect on the psyche of the region. Without any facts or figures, I have a strong belief that the PD has had a indirect (could be close to direct) affect of young professionals choosing to move else where for "greener pastures". It's almost humorous because they have written articles on how the region isn't doing enough to keep young professionals. Ironic. After reading reading all of this and my own experiences, I just knocked my 7 days a week subscription to just Sundays. Sorry, my wife likes the coupons too much to completely get rid of it.

^I'd definitely agree with that. Celtics just got their rings...booooooo... time for the Cavs to get their's!

Season starts tomorrow! Expectations for the team among the media seems to be mixed, but not like that really matters! I know I have a much better feeling going into this season over lasts. Go Cavs!

^My apologizes, I should have specified it is in the survey and design stages and fast tracked to be constructed by next year. That's about all I know though.

^ODOT and consultants are currently working to widen the ramps for 490E to 77N and 77S to 490W. I would assume it's so they can divert traffic during the rehab.

^^Interesting, I would much rather see something like this incorporated into a new bridge than a towering structure thats suppose to be "signature". And while it's not the most awe inspirering art piece I have ever seen, it has a very cool purpose.
  9. I admit I have no kids. Okay, maybe the use of the term complete ignoarance was a little harsh, but I was responsing more to the mentality of the man that thought the suburbs were the ONLY place he could get a good return on his condo and his future kids could get a good education. Cleveland certainly has it's problems with it's school system but what about inner-ring suburbs like Cleveland Heights, Shaker, Lakewood, etc...? This man thought that he had to go all the way out to Mentor to find what he was looking for. That I do think is ignorant.
  10. ^Maybe I'm wrong, but wasn't he talking more about the quality and variety of food products you can get at farmer's markets, ethnic food stores, etc..than what you get a restaurant? Not sure if I'm reading that wrong or not.
  11. While baby boomers do deserve most of the credit for the anti-urban mentality, this issue will not simply go away with the passing of them. They have planted their roots in the minds of many of their children unfortunately. An example is a young man (upper 20 something) I meet at a wedding this weekend who owned a condo in Mentor and worked doing IT at downtown Cleveland company. When I asked what he thought about his job, he replied he hated the traffic driving downtown and paying for parking. I asked why did he live all the way out in Mentor then? He said that he wanted to have kids someday and he also wanted to make money on his condo. Ignorance, complete ignorance.
  12. I completely agree. I really don't understand how people (Mr Larkin) can be turning this back on the city or the port. Eaton wanted something that shouldn't happen, a suburban office park on prime lakefront property. If Eaton really wanted to improve the community of downtown Cleveland they would have found a way to make this work by comprising. Apparently their suburban complex was something they couldn't comprise on, so they are gone. I blame this on Eaton! Don't let the door hit your a$$ on the way out!
  13. An excerpt from the "My Cleveland" piece in Sunday's PD with Michael Ruhlman. Alot of people think I'm crazy for loving Cleveland weather, but now I know I'm not alone. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MY CLEVELAND A town you can sink your teeth into Sunday, October 05, 2008 ...What's great about Cleveland? (Ruhlman's response) It's got the greatest weather in the world. I hate weather that's the same all the time. When I lived in Florida, it drove me crazy. I love the seasons, the cold, the gray, the beautiful falls. We can't complain about the weather here, it's the best. edit...here's the link to the article http://www.cleveland.com/plaindealer/stories/index.ssf?/base/living-1/1223195433320250.xml&coll=2

^^I like it too This enitre project is a hugh moving target and it rarely surprises me when things change. ODOT really put the cart before the horse on this and are paying for it, as are the tax payers. Who knows, maybe things could change for the better.

From the Pd http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/10/how_serious_are_the_inner_belt.html How serious are the Inner Belt Bridge's problems? Span's future in questionPosted by dsims October 02, 2008 23:12PM John Kuntz/The Plain DealerEngineers from the Ohio Department of Transportation examine a deteriorated section of the Inner Belt Bridge where the steel truss meets the arch. It is among five corroded steel sections that led ODOT to close two lanes in each direction on the I-90 bridge. The nearly 50-year-old Inner Belt Bridge, one of Ohio's major transportation links, is deteriorating beyond anyone's expectations. And its future as a rehabilitated span could be in jeopardy.
  16. Wow...I had no idea! I heard about them this past Dec. when my sister, who lives right down the steet from the Engine, brought some of their beer for dinner at my place. Their website talks about it...http://buckeyebeerengine.com/about
  17. I've been to Harp and thought it was pretty good too. Just this past Sunday I had breakfast at Buckeye Beer Engine on Madison in Lakewood. I was surprised how good the food was because it's not a place you usually associate with breakfast. I'd definitely recommend it. Nothing like having a Hippie IPA with your omelet :drunk: Now if only they sold Buckeye brews on the eastside
  18. You are correct, the Canada Goose is a protected species. Canada geese are protected by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 and the Migratory Bird Conservation Act of 1929. The former, the implementation of a 1916 convention signed by the United States and Canada, prohibits the hunting, possessing, purchasing and exporting of migratory birds "or any part, or egg of any such bird." Since neither law makes mention of wind turbines the protection of their species wouldn't be legally required under the current law in regard to this issue. (i.e. no instant red flag). Of course the environmental impact study would consider the effect on them and other species. Thanks for the clarification. I think the overall message should be that the positives of building these things should far out way the negatives of harming a couple of geese. We should be respectful of our surrounding environment, but you can only do so much before you have to blame alittle bit on the stupidity of a goose not avoiding a moving blade.
  19. Hello everyone! I have been reading this forum forum for quite some time but never participated. So here it goes... A couple of months ago I was having a conversation with a friend who works for a Cleveland area engineering and surveying firm and has been doing a significant amount of work on setting up wind turbines in NW Pennsylvania. I should preface this with the fact that he is not an engineer or scientist and has no involvement in this study of putting wind turbines in the lake, but does work very closely on these types of projects and is quite knowledgeable on what it takes to put one up. While reading the PD article above I did think it was interesting the mention of the need to study birds, because several months ago my friend had told me that this could be a major issue reated to this project. Specifically, I think it was because of the Canadian goose's migratory patterns. I am not 100% on this, but isn't the Canadian goose a protected species? If it is, then I would think anything that has the potential harm it could throw up some red flags by certain groups. I understand that this is mostly hearsay, but after the line in the article and surfohio's comment I thought that it was worth mentioning. I would hope that any problems with this could potentially be overcome as some have mentioned. This entire project has such great potential of making this region better for the future and I hope it succeeds.
