Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I think that's pretty much it. Start arresting people in the 1-2 am range for simply doing anything mildly stupid and the behavior will curb itself. Police patrol is one thing; police enforcing the law is another.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
^ I agree. If I'm on W 6th these days its usually for dinner or during the day for like college football. The turning point for me was last year (2009) during March Madness being at the Barley House for the Cleveland St/Wake Forest game (when CSU won). Good crowd for the game, good time, etc. My group stayed for the following set of games and as those games started ending (and it approached 10/11 pm) the crowd had a distinct change occur and suddenly we were all like "we need to get out of here". I was on guard just walking to the bathroom as the behavior in the bar became noticeably more aggressive. Can totally relate to the lack of self respect for oneself. There's a lot of "I have nothing to lose".

Munson Township: Fowler's Mill Golf Course
That's too bad...it's a great course and a beautiful setting. Sounds like someone manipulated local politicians to make a profit.

UrbanOhio Parents & Families
I know I ate that much when I was that age...I remember racing my brother in who could eat a large pizza the quickest. I probably could have eaten lard by the bucket and not gained weight at that age. I'm sure being pretty active in sports was a part of it, but I grew a lot in a short time too.

Learn something new each day...I had thought they "honor" numbers but didn't "retire" them.

Panhandling/Scamming stories
Panhandlers have annoyed me to the point where I stopped walking to work. I had instituted the sunglasses, iPod approach but was even tapped on the shoulder a few times and asked for money. I was even stopped by a woman dressed in business clothes who looked like she was going to work who needed money. I like riding my bike (and it's quicker) but on these nice summer days I preferred walking.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
That is incorrect. Browns retired numbers that I can think of off the top of my head 14 - Otto Gram 32 - Jim Brown 76 - Lou Groza "retired" meaning the number cannot be worn again?

Cleveland Browns Discussion
The NFL does not retire jersey numbers. There are logistical problems associated with it (i.e., too many players, not enough numbers).

Cleveland: Cleveland State University News & Info
I don't think the name means a whole lot either....it's the environment the school presents. Ohio State, when I was graduating high school, wasn't any different in terms of perception than the other higher regarded schools in Ohio. Today it has changed, and that's due to the environment OSU has created (and brand it has developed). When CSU shifts to a campus where there are a high % of students living there, it's perception will change. I know a lot of kids from my high school who liked things about CSU (cost, close to home) but ultimately chose Kent or Akron because those schools had a campus with student life. Personally, I don't believe schools become "better" academically. They become more in demand - for whatever reason - and thus can be more selective about who they admit. CSU has that opportunity to become more in demand, IMO, b/c if they can provide a campus with student life, Downtown Cleveland presents an attractive campus that might draw students who would otherwise go elsewhere.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Ha - I have one too. I was looking to get another Browns jersey and really didn't want any of the current players, but that's all that was available...at least for what I wanted to pay. Why they don't just stock the shelves with Kosar or Brown jerseys is beyond me. I bet those would sell better than any player on the team now!

Cleveland: Festivals, Music Concerts, & Events
^ I saw a pretty varied audience. From the guy dressed up (wrapped up?) in exclusively yellow caution tape to an older man dressed in slacks and dress shoes and a Lady Gaga concert t-shirt.

I wasn't at Sushi Rock, but I was at The Ritz last night and saw her - she was sitting at a table near us before her show. She definitely had/has a big following!

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
A great article: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/100708 20. Seven months later, it's happening. I can't wait to watch for the same reasons I couldn't turn away from O.J.'s Bronco chase or the Artest melee: it's Car Wreck Television. If LeBron picks anyone other than the Cavaliers, it will be the cruelest television moment since David Chase ended "The Sopranos" by making everyone think they lost power. Cleveland fans will never forgive LeBron, nor should they. He knows better than anyone what kind of sports anguish they have suffered over the years. Losing LeBron on a contrived one-hour show would be worse than Byner's fumble, Jose Mesa, the Game 5 meltdown against Boston, The Drive, The Shot and everything else. At least those stomach-punch moments weren't preordained, unless you believe God hates Cleveland (entirely possible, by the way). This stomach-punch moment? Calculated. By a local kid they loved, defended and revered. It would be unforgivable. Repeat: unforgivable. I don't have a dog in this race -- as a Celtics fan, I wanted to see him go anywhere but Chicago -- but LeBron doing this show after what happened in the 2010 playoffs actually turned me against him. No small feat. I was one of his biggest defenders. Not anymore. And here's where I really worry, because I don't think LeBron James has anyone in his life with enough juice to hurl his or her body in front of the concept of "I'm going to announce during a one-hour live show that I'm playing somewhere other than Cleveland." It's the best and worst thing about him -- he has remained fiercely loyal to his high school friends, but at the same time, he's surrounded by people his own age who don't stand up to him and don't know any better. Picking anyone other than Cleveland on this show would be the meanest thing any athlete has ever done to a city. But he might. Assuming he's not malicious, and that he's just a self-absorbed kid who apparently lost all perspective, that doesn't make him much different than most child stars who became famous before they could legally drink -- or, for that matter, Tiger Woods. That's just the way this stuff works. Too much, too fast, too soon. You don't lose your way all at once; just a little at a time. Then one day you look up and there's a TMZ photo spread with 15 of your mistresses, or you're agreeing to stab an entire city in the heart on a one-hour television show.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
maybe not quite 0%.... http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2010/07/lebron_james_will_choose_miami.html Yeah, looks like 0 was a bit low...lol Still, the point stands...he has more to gain by staying here...or go somewhere other than Miami. He might win in Miami, but he won't be elevated to "greatest player of all time" in Miami. There will always be the discussion of whose team it is and no matter how many titles (if any) these guys win in Miami, Wade will always have 1 more. A part of me wants to think this is hype to build up for this TV event. Otherwise, it's not very good PR.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
I don't know what to say to this. Yes, there have been good ideas to come from cities, but there have also been good ideas to come from suburbs and rural areas, too. Ideas come from people, not from places. I disagree. They mostly come from people interacting in useful ways in space. Interactions in suburbs are designed to be less frequent and have ended up also being less useful. That is self-evident to anyone who has lived in both. Having lived in both, I don't know how you could say this. I doubt you would find suburban neighborhoods where most everyone on the block doesn't know each other and have some social relationship. Meanwhile I know a couple people on my floor, I hang out with my one neighbor, but otherwise I know nothing about anyone in the rest of my building. In the 10 plus years of apartment living I did, I was never particular interactive with my neighbors. City life is more transient anyway...people are more rooted in suburbs and take more time to know their neighbors. People are typically closer in smaller towns than they are in large cities. Anyway, cities deteriorated for no other reason than the same reasons why each of you won't live in parts of your city. If you're really looking to be some noble urban trend setter, get out of your hip urban neighborhood and go live where the people you're chastising won't. Then I'll listen to this nonsense about how government subsidies, highways, or whatever policy caused inner cities to decline. The reason cities decline is exactly as Gramarye stated: decline of safety, decline of schools, and a decline of a standard of living. So people moved where the criteria that is important to them could be met - the same reason you've chose to live where you live.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Chris Bosh...7 seasons, 1 2nd team All NBA, 0 All defensive teams, 211-320 team record all time, 3-8 in playoffs. Who cares. There's 0% chance he's going to Miami. It hurts his brand. The NBA markets players (not teams) and Lebron wants nothing more than to market himself. The Showtime Lakers were Magic's team, even with Kareem and Worthy. The Celtics were Bird's team even with McHale and Parish. There can only be 1 alpha dog, and its been pretty clear that LeBron wants to maintain complete control. At this point, I would be pretty surprised if he left.

Help, I got two driving citations
You can also take a driver's safety course and basically have it negated, both in terms of your points allotment and potential insurance hike. The points aren't removed, you just get your total bumped up to 14 from 12 and your insurance will give you a credit for taking driver's safety. Personally I wouldn't think it's going to dramatically increase your rates. Depending on your insurance company they may not raise it at all. You can probably even call and ask them for advice.

Isn't it high time we liberalize our liquor laws?
In optimal situations, bar bouncers would keep an eye on the street. It is most certainly not in the best interests of anyone's business to allow fights on the street; it drives customers away. This is the number one reason why the city streets in general have become more dangerous in the last fifty years-the small businessmen who once monitored their neighborhood have been driven out of business. The point isn’t to make bar owners richer than they already are. It’s to promote Ohio in general as a destination where freedom is valued and your good times are nobody else’s business unless you harm them. For example: I cannot begin to tell you what a really poor impression the Highway Patrol creates to out-of-staters whose first or only exposure to the state is watching the red and blue lights on the turnpike. Issuing traffic tickets does very little for safety but does a lot to create enmity in people’s hearts. Open container laws serve much the same purpose (it’s more of a revenue-raiser for bars than it is a safety issue). I am of the firm belief that it’s these types of laws and traditions that do moreto drive people away from this place than any job market or climate problem does. Ohio isn't a place where freedom is valued b/c there are open container laws? Seems a little dramatic to me. And security at a bar does keep the immediate area safe, but there's a bit more to it than the space outside of an establishment that might be within influence of an employee there. And like I said, people are flocking to PIB in great numbers now, even though you can't wonder through the street with a beer.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
As soon as I stop seeing the qualifiers to stick to "certain parts" of Ohio City or Tremont or Detroit Shoreway or all other of the traditional urban neighborhoods, then I'll put some credence in all of the criticism of suburban life. But the fact of the matter is people who love urban living won't even live in all urban areas, so why are you so critical of suburbanites don't want to live where you don't want to live either? Not to mention more people work in the suburbs than work in the city, so why wouldn't they live close to where they work? The parking garage in my condo building is pretty much empty during work hours...should they move closer to their workplace too?

Isn't it high time we liberalize our liquor laws?
Open container laws are in place more to keep the trouble confined. If you can just drink anywhere, then you can conglomerate anywhere...and get into bar fights anywhere. Being drunk and stumbling to the next bar is one thing, but "loitering" of sorts in a public area is a problem...you would need to employee people (more so than already) to basically clean up public spaces, as you do a bar staff, along with extra security...except who is paying for all of this? Put-in-Bay wouldn't benefit from open container laws. All bars would be against it anyway. I mean, why go to a bar when you could just by a bunch of beer from the store and wander around with it? The Islands are already a huge draw and the number of visitors it brings in each year keeps growing. I forget the exact statistic, but they've like tripled the number of hotel beds oveer the past 10 years...the Miller Ferry just had to extend a boat 40' for more capacity, the Jet Express went from 1 boat in the fleet to 4, the State of Ohio just finished expanding the Middle Bass Marina doubling it's capacity...tourism is already growing significantly there...drinking in the park isn't going to make it grow any faster...

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
I think schools are the excuse for the move. I went to school in one of the western suburbs and I witnessed the same sh*t that only supposedly happens in cleveland. I mean how far away do you move? People are in alot of denial in the burbs because it's "their" kids Not with the frequency and acceptance of which it happens in Cleveland you didn't. There's no denial in graduation rates and test scores. CMSD isn't under academic probation because the kids can't learn, the teachers can't teach, or the buildings aren't modern enough. They're under academic probation because the environment they live in outside of school doesn't continue or enhance the education they receive while at school, basically nullifying anything productive they do while at school.
