  1. That's pretty much how I feel about everything with the RTA. Yeah, I understand funding is short. But you are still providing a service. So with what funding you have and with what service you provide, I wish it was done with more attention to detail across the board. I want to ride the RTA. But presently, I feel like the majority of riders are riding the RTA b/c they have to ride it...and RTA is treating its customers as such...i.e., we don't really care about all of these details, you have no choice but to ride public transit. It seems like they just aren't competing to get a market share of riders who have alternatives.
  2. ^ As are potions of RT 8 in Macedonia. I did notice the right lane construction work is about done between the race car derby hill and the Whiskey Island exit. Not sure what they were doing, but glad to have the lane back!
  3. A lot of these access questions, where to enter, what part is the atrium, when things open, consistant communication, etc...this is what I call "attention to detail". I would not expect that here, so I would just kind of roll with it for awhile.

I was at that game! (22-4) 3rd game ever at the new Yankee Stadium...lots of happy Indians fans at the park that day. Not to mention I had brunch at 5 Points next to Natalie Portman and who knows how many beers at McSorley's before hand... ;)
  6. Yes...I was actually thinking about this today as I allowed my friend who is in town this weekend to borrow my car. He lives in NYC and never drives and, frankly, is a terrible driver. So I'm sitting here mildly nervous that he may wreck my car and am thinking "how much would I make him pay me if he wrecks it"? I have been the only owner of my car (a 2002 VW Jetta) and I've taken pretty good care of it. It has 115,000 miles and based on how it's driving and how I've maintained it, I feel pretty strongly that it will make it to 200,000 miles. It's paid off and I'm about to transition to a new job where I will be working downtown, this ending my need to drive to work ever. So it will basically sit in the garage most of the time until I need it to go golfing, out of town, etc. I see no reason this car won't last me another 8 years and another 100,000 miles for effectively only the cost of maintaining and using it. Now, if I had to replace it, I would not feel comfortable buying a similar used car for what I would likely get for it's book value. There's an element of genetics with cars I think and despite the same make and model, not all cars are equal. So even if I replaced it with another 2002 VW Jetta with similar mileage, I wouldn't feel like I was getting an equivalent vehicle. If I were to buy a new or slightly used vehicle, I would suddenly have a car payment. So I basically decided I would make him give me $20,000 to go buy a new car should he wreck it ;)
  7. Here's a view we haven't seen yet (from 2007) EDIT: Changed to smaller version (which is still too big, but oh well)
  8. Yet everyone wonders why people in Little Italy are so abrasive towards outsiders
  9. It is not really about being "soft". It has a lot more to do with resources. The costs of incarceration are staggering. We don't have the money to lay the smack down on every criminal, which leads lighter sentences and early releases. If you want the courts to get tougher in the sentencing, you better not be one to oppose tax increases. The threat of stiff consequences are often enough to keep people straight. I disagree. I think the punishments should be designed to keep proven criminals out of society so they can't continue to do harm. As to Hts121's post: (1) I am a liberal, I love to tax and spend! :) (2) We could always spend a little less on prisoners. In my opinion, they aren't deserving of much more than the bare minimum to keep them alive. And then there's people that believe in the death penalty. Either way you view it, we should not be spending too much on people in prison for life. I'm right with you. Although I think US prisons should be run like foriegn prisons where the prisoners have no rights. Couldn't agree more
  10. Perhaps its a combination of having the stiff consequences and executing said consequences. The stat about $ of crimes committed by the % of criminals is right on. I don't think there should be any fluxuation in sentencing. It should be just like reading a chart.

Pretty excited for the World Cup. I got really into it in 2006, although I was in Europe for the first couple weeks of it so that helps. But i tried to check out that link and it took me a couple times to get through due to "high traffic volume" so it would seem a lot of people are excited about it.

"Just so people aren't repeating themselves, have you looked at the most recent threads?" "After reading posts here, I'm starting to wonder if I've been overlooking other neighborhoods (Detroit Shoreway, Cleveland Hts, University Circle, etc)." Seems clear to me.

If I'm going to grad school at CSU and I don't want to have to rely on a car, then I would rank downtown at the top of my list. I'd choose to live around W 6/9th and take the trolley (free) to/from school or you can walk (it's not that far). It has all the requisit bars, restaurants, coffee shops, grocery store, etc you're looking for and I know young females who live there alone and feel safe. You might decide you like to hang out in Ohio City, Tremont, Lakewood, etc from time to time, but going back and forth from school all day (or at least once per day) I'd prefer to be as close as possible and not have to worry about commuting in or out of downtown, especially if I decide to not bring a car with me. I also think, as someone who will be new to town, living downtown gives you the most flexibility to be able to meet people who might live in Cleveland Heights, Ohio City, Lakewood, etc and hang out with them regularly. People living in Lakewood likely aren't going out to Cleveland Heights much and vice versa. Downtown is more central and not particularly far from anywhere another grad student might live.

I see no reason to spend the money, time, and resources it takes to process the types of cases heard in a Mayor's Court in a Muni Court. Mayor's Court only handle basic cut and dry cases where the accused pleas "guilty" or "no contest" and the mayor levies a fine or community service. For example, there is a Mayor's Court on Put-in-Bay. People with minor misdemeanors who need to appear go there. I was there once for "Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle". I plead No Contest and was given 50 hours of community service by the then Mayor. Saved the village a bunch of money by not having to spend money to send their officers over to the Port Clinton Municipal Court. Kept the Port Clinton Municipal Court from having to waste its time having to listen to me explain how I came home one night from the bar, saw this golf cart in my front yard that clearly should not have been there and decided to go drop it off in town rather than have my parents question me about how exactly this random golf cart got parked in the middle of our lawn. Of course, as it turned out the golf cart had been reported stolen and I happen to pass a cop on my way into town. It's not like the Mayor is interpreting law or anything; they're basically reading off a chart to decide punishments for people who admit to doing what they have been accused of.

I agree - I saw it on the news and thought "I didn't even know they were playing".

You clearly know nothing about baseball if you think the Indians are "this bad".
  18. It's all about attention to detail in these developing neighborhoods. And this is why the CDC's exist in the first place, b/c frankly the City of Cleveland has about 0 attention to detail (perhaps too many layers of involvement). For example, last fall by the tree lawn near where I live, the leaves were raked and put by the side of the road for pick-up. But they were never picked up, then it snowed, they kind of decomposed, but were still like a wet clump on the road/tree lawn by the time spring rolled around. When it rained, the street would flood. I got sick of it so yesterday I borrowed a shovel from the maintenence guy and dug out the sewer drain and basically picked up all the leaves (that was now leaves/mud/crap) that should have been done by the city 6 months ago. Maybe the street won't flood now. And the thing is, this took my maybe 5 minutes. The service department can't drive around once a month and look for little projects like these to do? Now go throughout the city and you'll generally see there is no attention to these sorts of details anywhere. Hence you get neighborhood groups to take care of this sort of thing. The problem is the City never catches on. "Oh, well, XYZ group is cleaning up sewer drains...one less thing to worry about".
  19. There are lots of opinions of the commute between Lakewood and University Circle/Little Italy...I think it depends on whether they would find that daily commute OK or not OK. If OK, Lakewood would be an option. If not OK, the Heights area is probably the way to go.

Attendance will certainly be damaged if LeBron leaves. But let's burst the attendance bubble right off the rip. In the last 20 years the Cavs have only finished at the bottom of the table in attendance once. Any guesses? The year they purposely tanked to get LeBron. Through the post-Nance Mike Fratello Randy Wittman years, the Cavs were generally smack in the middle of the pack for attendance. Anybody remember those teams? Awful basketball that Clevelanders happily payed to witness. I would argue that Cleveland is generally a strong sports attending town, and Gilbert has put his roots a little to deep to be ditching town. Have you been to progressive field this year? Its sad man. I almost want to cry. That will happen to the cavs as well. This city supports the browns win or lose, but the indians and cavs when they win. The city supports a winner, period. When teams are horrible, games are sparsely attended, Browns included. Last year I went to 3 Browns games. The year before I went to 5. Do you know how many tickets I paid for? 0. None. Because people were practically giving them away the Browns were so bad. One of my co-workers couldn't even sell their browns tickets on e-bay last year starting at $0.99. $1 for 2 tickets!!! I turned them down for free. While the games were sold out, the stadium was clearly never full. Going back only 10 years is pretty restricting considering each franchise has undergone ownership changes during that time. But free agents will come here if a) the team is winning and b) they pay them. Take a look around the NFL...Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Indianapolis all get top level free agents b/c the team is good. The organization is well run. Those aren't marquee destinations like Miami, LA, or NY. And how is that LA football team? How horrible was that Miami football team until Parcells arrived? (1-15 in case you forgot). The Jets have been a weak club for years until this past year. Baseball is an entirely different animal b/c of the economics of it, but the Indians had no trouble getting top level free agents when the team was good. Robby Alomar. David Justice. Travis Fryman. Juan Gonzalez. Eddie Murray. Jacobs sold the team and Dolan said "cut salary". That was the end of that. The Tigers seem to be doing well lately. Or is Detroit a hot bed of activity that attracts top players like Miguel Cabrera? The Cavs have been operating under a "win now" model since LeBron only signed a short term deal in his last free agent period. That doesn't allow them the fortune of making moves designed for cap space purposes only, with no intent on immediately improving the team. How bad was LA right after Shaq left? They still had Kobe, but they made salary cap moves instead of basketball moves for a couple years to rebuild. They were average at best in 2006/2007. And suddenly, once they got pieces in place, they could make some trades to get Pau Gasol or sign Ron Artest. How good has the Miami Heat been the last few years? Doesn't everyone want to live it up on South Beach? Why do the Clippers lose every year, year in and year out? Don't they have LA going for them? When was the last time the Knicks were good? Gilbert has changed the culture of the team to be a winning one. Not a "I'm here to make money, I don't care how good the team is" one. Hopefully Mike Holmgren will do the same things for the Browns. Indians...well, baseball makes it tougher but less we forget it was only 3 years ago they were up 3-1 in the ALCS.

Don't believe the media when they say no athletes want to come here. If you buy into that then there wouldn't be any teams outside of New York, LA, Chicago, Texas, Florida or Phoenix. Players will go anywhere there is A) money and B) a chance to win.
  22. I think the Higbee building would be a great location for a permanent casino, let alone a temporary one.

Screw it...if you're going down, might as well go down hard... Cavs in 7.

As a season ticket holder, I've been to every home playoff game except last night. Why? Because after game 2, I didn't want any part of this series, so I put them up for sale. He didn't show up in game 2 either, until the 4th quarter when it was basially garbage time. I wasn't willing to take the chance I was leaving the arena after another no-show for game 5. I don't think there will be a game 7, but I don't plan on going to that either. The Cavs should beat Boston. I don't want to be a part of them giving a half-assed effort. I also don't want to be a part of a team that seems to be the only group of people on the face of the planet who follow the NBA that realizes the Cavs can crush the Celtics by going small, pushing the ball up the floor, and controlling the tempo by wearing their old asses out. God forbid they learn some lessons from that team that went 16-1 while Shaq and Z were out (including 2 wins against Boston) that went with LeBron, Jamison, JJ, Parker, and Mo with Delonte, Moon, Jawad, and Andy coming off the bench. But that would require a competant head coach.

Think Chicago can afford James? Calipari might be headed there... Lebron will most likely be playing for either Chicago or Cleveland next year, and I think he'll be playing for the team that hires Calipari. The other rumor I've hear is if the Nets land the #1 pick...hire Calipari, draft John Wall, and sign LeBron.
