  1. People kill me when they say stuff like this. Do they really believe one's race has anything to do with them being involved or victim to crime? Is it because they are victims of 400 years of a systematically racist justice (and economic) system or do you think crime is just in they DNA? Let us be for real. rofl at "the crime gene". I don't think any african americans where involved with the decision to destroy Nagasaki. Massacres in Jenin? nope, white folk there as well. Oh i forgot to mention the complete destruction of native american peoples and culture. Genocide America refuses to even honor with a holiday. White crime against people of color. Yeah police might arrest and judges will convict (most for nonviolent drug crime) black people more often but i assure you dangerous drugs aren't brought into america by your average working class street peddler. No crime gene; just a living in a culture that facilitates crime. It's not relfective of the race, just the culture of the community people live in.
  2. This hasn't been the case in Dayton. I think the proxy works the other way here. Black= the negative of the positive white attributes in my excerpt. This is the case with Trotwood. As you or others may recall I posted a long series of threads on Trotwood last year or the year before. As part of this I was all around Trotwood exploring the place. What I saw was generic suburbia in most cases. A place that looked a lot like the lower middle classs and middle class parts of Kettering in the central and western parts, west of Denlinger (the residential areas, not the Salem cooridor or business parts), in terms of housing stock. Not as solidly built out. The point is Trotwood has a bad reputation. Don't move to Trotwood. Trotwood is "ghetto". This is among whites. But it is equivilant to an average white suburb, and I know the people who live there are not ghetto because I worked with some of them. Yet race becomes a proxy for "bad", negative traits, but this is expressed in euphemism or code. I can relate to this growing up in Solon. There were subdivisions with more black people than others and they had that reputation among white people. But there were also subdivisions that were more Jewish than others, more Asian than others, or more Indian than others...but none of those subdivisions had the same reputation as the black ones. The other side of that though is white people aren't watching the news seeing Jewish people executing people in a park downtown, or Indians getting into gang fights, or Asian people enticing women back to their place with malt liquer then raping and killing them.
  3. This is pretty much what I eluded to earlier. "White" is not a race, per se, but more of a culture that exudes these traits. Assimilating isn't about race; it's about finding a common denominator among different cultures to allow people to live with each other. Irish people have a different culture than Italians, but they both have these traits. Look at pro sports where most of the players come from an urban inner-city culture. Gilbert Arenas brings guns on a plane and in the arena as "a joke". Mike Vick breeds dogs to kill each other. Plaxico Burris brings a loaded gun into a night club. Jason Williams shoots his limo driver. The list goes on and on. And each time something like this happens, you have fellow players defending them or the player themself feigning ignorance, as if they didn't know it was wrong. "That's how I was raised". And there in lies the problem. There is an urban culture that is not condusive to assimilating to anything. No other group of people can co-exist with that urban culture. And unfortunately, most of the people that exude that urban culture are black. It's sad b/c the people living that urban culture give the rest of their race a bad name...then ignorant people from outside that race project that on everyone...and the cycle just continues.
  4. The problem becomes the definition of "white". Most people take it to be color of skin. But is it? Why isn't "white" merely a common set of values shared by people? When the country was initially settling, people migrated together by similar traits, except most everyone was white. Neighborhoods were made up of Irish, Dutch, Polish, Slovakian, Italian, etc. Dutch people didn't live in Irish neighborhoods and vice versa. It wasn't called "racism" then even though technically it was. Ultimately those cultures integrated b/c they shared some basic common values. Today you see similar things. Minorities move to "white" neighborhoods just the same as white people - and for the same exact reasons. There are far too many areas dominated by an urban culture of crime and violence that no respectable person wants to be a part of...white or not.

I said 4-12...I guess they exceeded my expectations!
  6. Where is your proof that they are doing that? Where is the additional funding from the state of Ohio? I am taking KJP's word for it as he pointed to those states as state that increased their public transit fund after the federal gov't cut them while Ohio decreased. This is a point you agreed upon and thanked KJP for making, yet now when I'm presenting a different argument using these facts you're asking me to prove them? Prove to me they didn't happen. I quite comfotable taking the word of a professional in the transit industry that these are accurate facts.
  7. My contention is KJP's bolded point is a RESULT of poor RTA management, not that RTA management had it's hands tied by outside forces. This is how it works in business and politics. Strong leaders make sure their sh!t is taken care of. I've seen it time and time again in the business world and in the political world. Company merges - who gets the FTE? The strong leaders. New legislation passes - who gets the earmark? Strong leaders. The areas with strong leaders who can get others to support their cause get taken care of. If superman is running the RTA, we wouldn't have experienced the drastic budget cuts. Ohio would have instead been among the Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, etc. who had significant increases in their public transit funding. How can any General Manager (of any transit agency) tell the state & federal government they should NOT TO CUT transit funding?? I'm all for strong arming someone, but a public agency needs to remember the hand that feeds them. The same way people from Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, etc did it. Make your reason for needing funding be more important than the other public agencies lobbying for funding. State your case (effectively) for the need for public transit. It also points to the leadership of the City of Cleveland for allowing the city to reach the economic state it's presently in.
  8. I too remember when there was nothing there. however, "boom cities" growth has all but stopped. They are now bleeding. Who is "they" and how do "they" apply to the discussion at hand of Dallas/Ausitn/Texas?

  10. Did the same. I suppose he was trying to be funny while plugging his book, but he came of kind of like a jerk about it. "Eh, sorry we ran out of time but plugging his book is better than having him on anyway...but he can come back anytime he wants."
  11. In a related story: http://money.cnn.com/2009/12/23/real_estate/fastest_growing_states/index.htm The growth in Dallas while I lived there was really remarkable. And the growth since I left - only 3.5 years ago - is just as remarkable. I was a season ticket holder for the Mavs when the American Airlines Center opened for the 2001/2002 basketball season (and home to the Stars). There was literally nothing around it. I actually have a great picture of the arena approaching it from the West End area I use on my screen saver at home. Today that picture would look nothing like it with the large infill of mixed use buildings - shops, restaurants, condos, office buildings, etc. And all of that around the arena was put up after I left.
  12. Two things I really miss about Dallas - Steakhouses and Tex Mex! Dallas was a great place to live as someone right out of college but it never quite felt like home! I do wish Cleveland could take a page out of Dallas in terms of development...they can't expand the DART fast enough!
  13. I don't think they have finalized a location of the park or even the path through the Flats. The project is being managed by the County Engineer's office and, well, they are a little busy right now. But you can check out the website here: http://www.ohioanderiecanalway.com/ there is an interactive map you can browse to get an idea of what has been proposed.

OK...not to keep running with this, but I have spoken with Cimperman, the Flat-Oxbow folks, and a few others in regards to the lighting in and around the flats. Like mentioned earlier, it's a matter of who is responsible. Street lighting is handled by the city (thus usually CPP). They're usually on top of that if street lights are out and you contact them (I usually email Cimperman's office and it's fixed rather quickly). Other lighting in the flats (bridges, walkways, parking lots) gets more complicated as there are questions of who owns the lighting (i.e., who should pay for it). RTA, Jacobs, CPP, and CEI are the main parties and there are disagreements among entities as to who owns what. So yeah, there are issues with existing lighting, but if the lights installed in the district of design have a clear understanding of who is responsible for maintaining them, then I have full confidence they will be maintained.

My boss was a total B*tch, but knew everything and everyone in PR/Communications in Cleveland, Ohio and the Midwest. Although I like her body of knowledge, I say right then and there, I would never be a manager like her. I was a finance major with a art history minor. I only got into PR because my best friend was into it. Luckily SOHIO was so big, I got to learn about four different divisions in three summers. When I was hired, I was hired onto the Cleveland Oil Division. I worked my way from the bottom. Hard work pays off. And I think - while school can play a role, particularly depending on industry or desired geographic location - hard work is the biggest factor.
  16. Nobody is asking you to do a happy dance over the two BCS championship games we lost. We're just asking you to keep those losses in perspective to the success of the entire program. Every big-time program has its uptimes and downtimes. Heck, I can remember Florida having blowout Orange Bowl losses in the pre-BCS era. Well, they didn't collapse because of that. And Ohio State won't collapse either. Because OSU is consistently strong, they'll get more chances in the future. Don't get me wrong, it's certainly nice to win the Big 10 (or a share of) for 5 consecutive years. And yeah, every team has it's down years. See Michigan. See "The Ron Zook Years" at Florida. USC before Carroll. Texas before Mac Brown. Oklahoma before Bob Stoops. But look, I'm married to a Florida Gator alum. My side of the family includes Texas and LSU alums. It's tough defending the Buckeyes after losing 3 BCS games in a row and going 0-2 against USC. A win in the Rose Bowl would help me out a little! (And so would some of the other Big 10 teams stepping up for the conference. Aside from PSU, it's been a little thin lately)
  17. This is the Charlie Weis definition of what is good. "Almost beating Texas" is about as good as "almost beating USC". Either one is a loss. And yes, I blame Tressel. He had opportunities in that game (against Texas last year) to put pressure on offensively when OSU was leading. And what are you doing putting your defense in a position as time is running out where the opponent can beat 1 guy to win the game? The post game analysis pretty much ripped Tressel a new one for the defensive call with less than a minute left. While I care about wins and losses, I care about how the teams plays. And in big games, they have not played to their potential, IMO, since Miami. The losses to Texas and USC were inexcusable. The a$$ kicking against Florida and USC were also inexcusable. Can't say I expected them to win against LSU...but when Beenie Wells is ripping apart the LSU defense in the 1st quarter I kind of expected them to stick with the running game a bit more since it was obviously very effective. Instead, it vanished in the 2nd half...down 24-10 doesn't mean abandon the running game.
  18. Uh, right...I'm a huge OSU fan sick of seeing the team under perform in big games. I've been to 2 of the 3 national championship games and 2 other bowl games this decade. Maybe I'm just sick of spending my money on a poor product (and totally why I haven't attended a bowl game since the Florida disaster). Be objective. What big game performance recently have you been happy with? Looked really impressive @ Penn State this year (was at that game too)...but I don't consider that to be on the level of a BCS game or games against Texas or USC. By no means am I saying Tressel should go, but for the talent he has - outside of the LSU game which I didn't think they had any business being in - OSU should have either A) won the game or B) been more competitive. And neither was accomplished. It's one thing to lose to Penn State at home (2008) and just get beat by the better team. It's another to get out played or out coached in a significant fashion consistently in major non conference games.
  19. Are you saying you're happy with their performance in BCS games? The win over Miami was clearly awesome. Not sure how impressed I am with wins over ND and K-State. Embarrassing losses against LSU and Florida and a choke job against Texas in the other BCS games. Couple that with choke jobs against Texas (2005) and USC (2009) and the embarassment against USC (2008) and Tressel has been sub-par in big games against anyone not named "Michigan". For me, this is a big game for Tressel. He hasn't beat an opponent like this (BCS conference champ) in this sort of game (BCS bowl) since Miami 7 years ago.
  20. I've only seen Glenville play once but if they can limit their mistakes - particularly turnovers and costly penalties - they should win. Glenville has D-I college atheletes at several positions...they just have a tendency to be over aggressive and/or a bit sloppy at times (at least in the game I saw).
  21. I like the new layout, but it needs a bit of formatting work. Some of the graphics overlap and it makes it look a bit disjointed.

Yeah, I read the original description and thought "Lakewood" too. Detroit Ave is a main road in Lakewood; generally areas north of Detroit are a bit nicer and like BelievelandD1 said, the more west you go within the city, the more you can expand your search south of Detroit. My wife is from South Florida, has lived here for 3.5 years now and would never move back...but it's always nice to have some family/friends to go visit in the winter!
  23. Isn't Fostoria in NW Ohio?

The "Urban Ohio" logo at the top used to link to www.urbanohio.com...now it links to the forum home page: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php Not sure if that was an intended change, but thought I would point it out.
