Well...we'll see how it does. Hopefully it can spur more development in the West Bank.

Higher Education
The earnings graph isn't unique to young college grads. That trend can be applied to all groups, young and old, college degree or not. I still feel the there's plenty of jobs out there, just not enough qualified people to fill them.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Surprised to not see something about this posted here. It's been all over my FB page as I have a friend who lives right near this house. Sometimes I get nervous about the future of Lakewood. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/lakewood_man_charged_in_fatal.html

UrbanOhio's 5000th Member!!!
What value are they adding? I know there are lots of "lurkers", but it is strange for a site like UO to have such a large number or inactive or "zero" members. I bet if you turned the forum into a revenue generating site like the NYTimes where after X number of views you're locked out, activity would increase and so would revenue. Activity is measured by more than the number of posts you make. Personally, I don't post nearly as much as I read. I refrain from posting things that I don't really feel add value (like the random posting of a graphic trumpting your own existence). I have also learned that there's a limit to communicating in print vs in person, or even on the phone. Messages are often miscontrued or people tend to focus on bits and pieces of posts, rather than the whole thing. So sometimes I think "not worth the effort". Anyway...approaching 1,000 posts!

Stuck in Ohio or Content?
I have a hard time understanding being unhappy with your life, or feeling "stuck". You control your emotions, at least in a long term sense like "overall happiness". If you're not generally happy, I tend to think you are the problem, not everything or everyone else. It's kind of annoying to hear people say "they're stuck". You're not stuck. You're choosing to live where you do and just bitching - something along the lines of having your cake and eating it too. That or you are afraid to take risks. Anyway, I'm very happy to be in NE Ohio. Sure, there's things I would like to be better or different, but I will either work to make it better or just make the best of it. I've lived in other places but eventually came back to Ohio...and don't want to be anywhere else. My wife, a Ft Lauderdale native and UF grad, also loves it here and has no desire to move back south. It's certainly nice to visit Florida a couple times a year (especially in the winter), but I will say I was very to be home after two weeks down south.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
My sister had her car window smashed in in Tremont last weekend, and her garmin stolen. Yeah, yeah...you shouldn't leave your garmin sitting out in the open. She agreed - which is why it was in the glove box, where it was stolen from.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
^When K&D backed out of the Tenk building, someone else bought it. They're running a construction/demolition operation out of there now, at least in part of the building. I think there's a recording studio in another part.

Higher Education
Coming into this a little late, but as an OU alum, I enjoyed this post. I will also say however that after spending summers on Put-in-Bay throughout college, I often looked forward to returning to OU for a bit of a break from partying... Anyway, as for the rest of this, I don't see a society where not having a college degree is beneficial. Most of the people I know who didn't go to college or dropped out after a few years aren't doing much more than living paycheck to paycheck. If nothing else, college teaches you how to think for yourself, manage time effectively, and interact with others. I can't tell you much of what I actually learned in a classroom in undergrad...and I am sure I'd have to study pretty hard again to pass some of my graduate school courses. But I was tought how to learn and apply knowledge, as well as how to build relationships with people - all types of people, not just ones who would normally be a part of my social circle. I'm already socking away money to help pay for my kids college education. I only wish Ohio had some of the college programs like other states do with pre-paid tuition. My wife's parents locked in her tuition rate in Florida when she was born and paid it off over 18 years, rather than paying whatever the cost would be 18 years later - whether it be in loans, savings, or some combination of both. Much better than a 529 plan (although limits you to state schools).

The Vast Anti-Density Conspiracy
I think what's missing in this line of thought is urban living is not for everyone. Even people who enjoy urban living don't want to do it forever, depending on what stage of life they are in. Consider NYC. Long Island was created simply by people not wanting to live in the crowded city anymore. Even today, people that live in the city flee on weekends if they can...and often move out of it when they reach a certain point in their life. I lived in downtown Cleveland for 5 years. I loved it and enjoyed my time there. I moved out of the city this year as I am at a stage in my life where urban living just isn't as practical as living in the suburbs. People generally live in areas (assuming they can choose where they live) because it's supports the type of lifestyle they want to live. Urban living presents lifestyles that not all people want to live.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Emotion can hurt just as much as it can help...over confidence, complacency, lack of focus. See Iowa St over Oklahoma St. Or perhaps Troy Smith going on his celebrity Heiseman tour instead of focusing on beating Florida.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
I would take OSU against the spread...they've hung in there against every top team in the Big 10. I think which team's QB makes plays down the stretch will decide it.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
The more I watch football, the more I am convinced the opposite is true, particularly as you get to higher levels where the difference in talent isn't that great. Confidence, determination, mental state through the entire game (stay focused on execution)...this is what seperates teams...and why coaches can have such a big impact.

Sears / Kmart News
I believe the whole basis of this thread was pretty thin from the start. How it made it to five pages shows how much we love to play what-if here. And considering that the discussion has gone in every which way in the absence of real news, tells me this thread has probably outlived its usefulness. Right on. The extent of this thread should have been: Original Post Subject: Sears HQ headed to Ohio? First Response: "No." End of thread.

Advice on Living in Downtown Cleveland
^ I had some friends live in Crittendon Ct and enjoyed living there. I think if you're going to live by yourself that will likely be the only place downtown that fits in your price range. Working in Mentor, the other place I would suggest looking would be in Cleveland Heights, around the Coventry area (Coventry Rd and Euclid Heights intersection). You can find places in your budget there as well - and its a fun urban neighborhood close to universtiy circle & little italy.

Penn State Scandal
I don't think anyone should be allowed to comment on this story until they read the grand jury report. And a few other articles: Penn State child sex-abuse scandal: When we had the facts, we ran the story http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2011/11/penn_state_child_sex-abuse_sca.html A Patriot-News Special Report: Who knew what about Jerry Sandusky? There were many missed chances to investigate as early as 1995 http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2011/11/who_knew_what_about_jerry_sand.html And this article from April 4, 2011... Madden: Sandusky a State secret http://www.timesonline.com/columnists/sports/mark_madden/madden-sandusky-a-state-secret/article_863d3c82-5e6f-11e0-9ae5-001a4bcf6878.html This is a massive cover up. I have a feeling this is only going to get worse. And for those of you wondering about how McQueary remains on the staff (although he won't be there this weekend)...he remains on the staff b/c the DA needs him to be a cooperative witness. Remember what the "S" stands for in PSU - the DA can easily negotiate employment - and any lawyer worth his salt will have that upfront for his client before agreeing to a grand jury testimony. Why do you think he hasn't spoken out yet now? Plus, PSU doesn't want him out there blabbing about what he saw and what he was told to do. Keeping him on the payroll is the easiest way to do it.

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
I'm surprised that you would advocate for such a plan. I think districts like Solon would send more to the state than they receive back. But anyways, for the reasons you cited, I would love it if Ohio moved in that direction for education funding. These constant levies can be really divisive. On a related, but still off-topic note, I was surprisingly pleased to see that not only did the CH-UH levy pass, but it did so by a somewhat significant margin. I thought for sure that thing was going down in flames. I tend to think funding isn't the main issue with a school's performance. There's a big role the community and parents play and something tells me the parents in other school districts aren't suddenly going to be better parents because their school suddenly has adequate funding.

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
I still don't understand why school funding hasn't been reformed. It doesn't seem all that complicated to me - pass a mandatory tax that isn't voted on by anyone that goes into a state education fund and distribute accordingly. If you're going to mandate public education by law, you should similarly mandate the funding for it. I think that would at least help resolve some of the tension around levies, budgets, etc.

^ Disgusting...and even worse having just read about a similar incident in Cincy (where the poor kid was beaten to death by his dad). WTF is wrong with these people.

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
^ What is your experience with teachers and/or teachers unions that leads you to believe this? I certainly don't think the exclusive purpose of a union is to save a bad teacher's job, but I know it happens (along with other things that don't make a lot of sense to me). So, could you be clear: are you suggesting bad teacher's don't frequently keep their job because of union influence?
