  1. Expect to see this mock photo become reality in the next month or so. Nothing has been officially announced, but I heard PNC bought National City last night.
  2. As a resident of Cleveland, I agree.

The worst offender of this is Catawba Island, OH. It's not an Island.

No, but in the right direction with a local artist (well, local being primarily performing in Ohio).

I like the term "North Coast". Perhaps only because it incites fond memories..."East Coast, West Coast, no need to roam. You know the North Coast is better and its closer to home"...but I like it none the less. Bonus points for anyone who can name the song those lyrics are from.

This is why spring is my least favorite season. You're ready for winter to be over, but inevitably it is still snowing in late March or early April. Then it's beautiful out one day but crappy for another week. I was shocked when the weather was nice this past Memorial Day for the first time in years. So while I love summer, I feel like it signifies the end of something whereas fall reflects the start of something. Perhaps this is a school oriented thing as opposed to a nature oriented thing.
  7. Key reimburses any fees that you incur with other banks' atms. And what are the stipulations required to get that benefit? National City has checking product that will not charge you a fee for using a foreign ATM, but to get reimbursed for fees other banks charge, you have to have either $5,000 in monthly deposits or an average daily balance of something rather large...I forget exactly...
  8. Wouldn't the following article from the Plain Dealer indicate that this in fact isn't what is hurting them (at least through June 30)? http://www.cleveland.com/plaindealer/stories/index.ssf?/base/business-8/1223541109300460.xml&coll=2 Also surprising is that Key's deposits are up (albeit not as much). That's the thing - there was no financial crisis as of June 30th. This has all happened in the past 30 days, particularly Monday and Tuesday of last week.
  9. LOL. I don't plan on moving from Cleveland ever again. Regardless of how bad it gets, life goes on.
  10. This is correct. From a capitalization standpoint, National City is fine. In fact, it has the highest capitalization rate among all tier I banks. Asuming "business as usual" and nothing needs to be done. The issue is liquidity. ALL financial companies are less willing to lend right now. National City has lines of credit with other financial institutions and if they suspend those lines of credit, that's a problem. Also, in the "consumer panic" alert, some small businesses have pulled deposits. Path dependency = if you fear it to happen, you will take action to make it happen...and this is what they are seeing happening. Basically, any further consumer panic or credit freeze from lenders and National City will be taken over. The executive board has done everything they can to ensure National City is in the best position it can be to withstand the current market situations. Unfortunately, their fate lies in the hands of others.

It will be interesting to see how he does in the playoffs. After leading the league in IP last year, he broke down in the playoffs. he lead the league again this year...we'll see if it is to a different result. Well, got an answer to this question...CC tanks again in the playoffs.
  12. I guess that's what I was getting at...its one thing to keep everyone living in Ohio from Columbus south from going to IN, KY, and WV. It's another to draw in people from IN, KY, WV, and in Ohio north of Columbus down to your Casino in the middle of nowhere. So why I am going here as oppose to any other Casino that 1) I've become familiar with and like, 2) Have accumulated reward points, and 3) is no further away than this one? What differentiates this Casino in the middle of nowhere Ohio? The MGM grande in Vegas is one thing... this is completely different. I'm sure that Argosy doesn't get 50% of its revenue from shopping, shows and what not. People in Cincinnati might be torn between Indiana and this new one... but Columbus and Dayton folks would surely flock to this. I like the location and if it's done right it really could be a destination. Right - it is completely different from Vegas, but exactly the same as Moutaineer, Seneca, etc. And it's location makes it more limited to becoming a destination and prohibits it from tying in overflow business from other activities. I mean, if you end up at this Casino, the only reason you're there is to be at this Casino. People are in Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, etc for other reasons as it is, why not capitalize on that and make it more like Vegas? Not in terms of the grand nature of Vegas, but in terms of it as a full out tourist destination catering to many audiences.

I can at least creat an interest routing for Milwaukee, Tampa, & Cubs who I know has a fan base (well, not sure about the Rays fan base) that is similar in frustration to us here in Cleveland. Although Manny and the Dodgers are sticking it to the Cubs right now...
  14. Future Casino's would require another election. Voting "yes" for this issue would only allow this one. Has anyone read anything on why this location is selected? I know the "given" answer - it's conveniently located between Cincy, Columbus, and Dayton. But seriously, has anyone seen any analysis where the company detailed the general & industry environments associated with this market? This is a pretty random, remote location. Less than 50% of MGM Mirage's profit comes from gaming; it relies on shopping, conventions, shows, etc...the power of compliments. It seems like this would be better paired in an existing Ohio city to make it more of a tourist destination...like in Cleveland and tie it with Playhouse Square? At this point, you're competing with other area Casinos outside the state...how are you going to be differentating yourself in Central Ohio?

It will be interesting to see how he does in the playoffs. After leading the league in IP last year, he broke down in the playoffs. he lead the league again this year...we'll see if it is to a different result. He'll still get a monster contract from someone though.

Ah, I see... Gay Marriage = Bad Man married to multiple women = exactly what God was looking for A well thought out concept
  17. Wow, what optimism! Basic psychology - if you believe it to be true, you start taking action that makes it come true. Only consumer panic will cause National City to fail. http://money.cnn.com/2008/09/29/news/national.city_deposits.fortune/index.htm But the demise of WaMu and Wachovia shows that in the current panic, a bank's executives aren't completely in control of their fates. At WaMu, depositors withdrew billions of dollars after Lehman Brothers' collapse two weeks ago sent the financial markets into a panic, forcing the Office of Thrift Supervision to seize the thrift and put it into FDIC receivership.
  18. Unless consumer's pull their money from the bank, I would be buying the crap out of the stock...at least until it hits $5.
  19. 65th, with a performance index of 103.8
  20. They are desegregated. Otherwise those percentages you listed next to the school system for % African-American would be 0. While I agree funding is critical, having money in your school system does not indicate success. Nor does each school system have equal needs when it comes to school funding (as you might imagine with the top 2 districts). Here are the top 10 school systems in terms of expenditure per pupil (2007 School Year, Districts with High Schools Only): 1. Kelleys Island ($48,033) 2. Put-in-Bay (28.5) 3. Cuyahoga Heights (18.7) 4. Beachwood (18.3) 5. Orange (18.2) 6. Cleveland Heights/University Heights (15.7) 7. Youngstown City (15.4) 8. Shaker Heights (15.1) 9. Perry (14.9) 10. Princeton City (14.4) Others: Cleveland: 12.2 Columbus: 12.6 Cininnati: 12.5 Dayton: 13.5 Akron: 10.4 Toledo: 11.3 So what leads to success? Ask any teacher and they will tell you Parents are the number 1 indicator of success. This "white flight" argument is non-sense. What about "Black Flight"? Do you think Solon's school system was 12.9% black 20 years ago? No...it was maybe 1%. But black families who valued education moved to Solon because of the school system & they were sick of dealing with members of their old community who didn't take any accountability for their child's education. So they moved to communities where they knew the majority of citizens - regardless of race or religion - valued education as much as they did. I mean, why is Parma (94.7% White) the 322nd rated school district in Ohio? Hmm...maybe its the values of the community that matter. And people are going to move to communities that share similar values as their own. What needs to change is the attitude and values of the people in the school district in order for it to succeed, not the racial make-up. Do you think Ottawa Hills would still be ranked #1 if their attendance rate (currently 96.4) was like Cleveland (90.9) or Dayton (90.81)?

Yup...better go stock up on bottled water and canned goods while you can. Luckily I still have some leftover from Y2K.
  22. I just did...probably doesn't matter, but at least I feel better.
  23. That is my impression too, although I am no tax expert. Still, it seems to be in the City's best interest to shave off high end income tax revenue to prevent a HQ from leaving...also might be a good incentive for more companies to move back in. Quantity vs. Quality is always better, IMO, when it comes to a tax base. Those lost employees will be spending their work week money elsewhere...business meetings, lunches, errands, etc...
  24. Correct - it has little housing/residents (~1,600)...it's mostly office complexes and a jail. Something tells me its tax structure is business friendly...
  25. Always all about the bottom line. Which is worse (City of Cleveland Leaders)? Losing a large company headquarters or changing tax laws to receive less income tax from top executives?
