Where did you get your political beliefs?
Obviously I got my political beliefs before this, but to tie it into today's environment... Listening to both conventions, the part that elicited the most repsonse from me was in Obama's acceptance speech when he said: In Washington, they call this the "Ownership Society," but what it really means is that you're on your own. Out of work? Tough luck, you're on your own. No health care? The market will fix it. You're on your own. Born into poverty? Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps, even if you don't have boots. You are on your own. No, you're not on your own per-se, but I'm sure as he11 not looking for some government program or civil organization to help me out. I'm getting out of whatever situation I'm in on my own. Displaying hard work will attract any help I might need along the way. Government programs foster apethy and stifle competition in my opinion. I'm pretty liberal when it comes to social issues, but highly conservative when it comes to economics. I'm not very religious, I'm pro-choice, support gay rights, and am concerned about the environment. But my stance on the economy makes me lean Republican. I think Huckabee summarized it pretty well in his speech during the RNC when he said something to the effect of "I'm not a Republican because I grew up rich; I'm a Republican because I didn't want to be poor for the rest of my life waiting for the government to do something about it." I think this stems from my father, who grew up poor with his mother raising 4 kids (his father died when he was young). He worked his tail off putting himself through college and graduate school and made it on his own. I think I grew up hearing "If you want something, you gotta earn it" at least once a day.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I know the building you're referring to...its Yellow and currently has a beauty saloon in it and looks like there used to be a furniture store in there. From the river, it looks like it might have been, at one point, a hotel b/c there are balconies off every window on every floor. But I have thought the same thing...great spot for condos

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
That's the bizarre part to me too...in meeting them and talking to them, I was really encouraged. I met them before the place opened and had a few conversations with them when it first opened. I thought there were a few things to be ironed out but they seemed to be capable of handling it. 6 months later (or I guess 4 months...its been 2 months since I've been there) nothing has seemed to have changed.

Interesting...did you actually utilize this? I had some trouble with actually getting the advertised happy hour prices when they first opened. I had to tell the bartender what the happy hour specials were...this was "news to her" and had to confirm with a couple people. Then of course, they couldn't figure out how to use the register to apply HH prices... I so badly want that place to be somewhere I go to all the time...but its just not there yet. Sad b/c there is so much potential.

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
Yesterday I got on the E-Line trolley at 18th street and got off somewhere between 17th and 14th to start walking b/c traffic was so bad I could actually walk faster. Granted, the Browns were playing so that is an exception, but I take the E-Line to school at night and traffic does move slow through that area. I'm all for walking, but it's 2 miles between where I need to go and that just takes longer than I always have time for. So yes, I agree they need to work on the traffic patterns there.

Good to hear Sainatos opened...I wondered when that was going to take place. Although I discovered the Pizza Pan in Tremont will deliver to the West Bank, so I had been using that. I guess its good to hear about 2020...I think I need to hear about 15 more of those sort of reviews before I consider revisiting though. The two hour wait for my pizza because "the ovens needed to heat up" and then having it arrive burnt is tough to get over, especially since I've had so many other good experiences elsewhere in the area.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
HUH? RTA is a county agency and blame, even from suburbanites, can't be placed on the city or city leaders. When you have city councilman, Kucinich, etc - who talk about this issue, get their facts wrong and do nothing to actually help the RTA fix the problem, much of the blame falls on their shoulders. Instead of helping, they continue to fuel the negative opinions of the general public and create the scene we saw yesterday. And the leaders representing the people were from Cleveland, not other cities.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Very discouraging. We saw here today, and have seen here in the past, the main issue with Cleveland - it's leaders are horrible, fueling the uninformed opinions of the general public. And what is worse, many suburbanites are going to see this and think "those people of Cleveland can't manage anything right...I'll stick to my suburb and my car."

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
I asked a worker what they were doing and he told me they were upgrading the sewer system. I wanted to ask more details and what has been taking them so long/why they work one week on, one week off, but I gathered that was about all I was going to get out of him.

Are you colorblind? Take the test
I saw this topic and knew I would fail and of course, I failed. That pretty much sums it up for me too.

Speeding Tickets
Yes, you can take a driver's safety course through the BMV and have 2 points taken off (or maybe it adds 2 points to your allowed total before suspension, I am not exactly sure). But that will help keep your insurance and points down. You can call the city prosecutor in each city and see what your options are for negotiating a lesser violation. You may be paying more up front, but it might keep your insurance down. That is more risky though, especially b/c you were simply speeding - that's pretty black and white. And if you're already at speed when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, you need not apply the gas at all while shifting (so if you're in a 25 mph zone and simply want to decrease RPM, just shift - don't hit the gas). You only really need to apply the gas when stopped and shifting to first, although if you find the sweet spot in your clutch, you can inch forward as if you had an automatic.

Nice work with the RTA website! I sent a letter to everyone listed on the site - Governor, state and US senators/representatives...it took 10 minutes. I think everyone should do the same.

Lake Erie is getting warmer and smaller
Yes...this is all pretty ridiculous. 10 years ago, ports in the Western Basin were having to dredge channels because the water levels were so low. This summer, water levels have been high allowing boats to go over reefs that used to result in a ripped up prop. Water levels fluctuate greatly year to year.

Where is the best place to get pizza?
I think those hours eliminate it from being "the best place to get pizza". If Lola still had the same great food but it had sh!tty service, is it still the best restaurant in town? No.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Nobody is asking him to be a Buckeye fan and nothing is wrong with saying "USC is going to roll over Ohio State and give them a PAc-10 a$$ whipping". But refrain from "I cannot stand the Buckeyes, and having to live in Ohio and hear those people talk about their team..." because those people are the same ones cheering you on.

General Roads & Highway Discussion (History, etc)
I have one for use on Put-in-Bay. I filled the tank up in the spring and it still has 1/4 left...granted I am never driving very far, but I do use it alomst every weekend. Mine doesn't go close to 42 mph, maybe 25. But you do have to watch it while braking and turning. Still it's not really a whole lot different than driving around on a motorcycle or scooter among amongst regular traffic and its not like you're making 42 mph turns in your regular vehicle, or that you don't turn differently in your sports car vs. your truck or take more caution when braking in a van compared to a compact car. I could see it working in limited areas...I'd love to use it in downtown Cleveland as an altenative to the bus.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Yeah, no binge drinking goes on in Athens or PIB  Carson was pretty stupid for saying that. Support your team, talk ridiculous amounts of crap if you have nothing to do with who you're talking about. But if you work and live in Ohio and are supported by people who you are talking sh!t about, not a good idea. For a football team that is already having a PR nightmare from it's prior off the field antics, it doesn't need more from its leader.

Cleveland City Council
Here is my limited experience with the City of Cleveland, in terms of government and broken processes: - Get a ticket for driving the wrong way down a one way street - Fight the ticket in court, and win, due to lack of proper signage - Judge tells arresting officer to follow up with the city to get proper signage (or signs at all) hung - I also follow up by emailing and calling traffic engineer department I received my ticket in February, my court date and subsequent interaction with the city was in March. By the start of this month, there are still no signs and I see cars routinely pulled over doing the exact same thing I was ticketed for (like, at least once a day - several times on weekends). I email my city-councilman and 4 days later, there are signs everywhere. Strangly, cars stop going the wrong way down the one way street. So yeah, middleman is about right.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I just re-read the executive summary...page 5 had the estimated fares between major stations. For example, Cleveland-Columbus was $50 train ticket, $44 Auto Per Car (business), based on the 2002 $0.325 IRS standard mileage rate, which is now up to $0.585. So 44/0.325*0.585 = $79.2...hmmm...yeah, I say take the train...can we skip the study and go right to construction?

Ohio: Starbucks Closings
Actually, I have read articles about Starbucks where they intentionally over-saturated markets, placing stores less than 1/2 mile from existing stores for the sole reason off killing of competition...figuring if the over-saturate the market, they will survive longer than competitors.
