Governor John Kasich
You don't understand it because you've missed the point. These social programs aren't attempts to prevent the unpreventable. They are essentially insurance devices to mitigate risks, particularly in the case of the larger ones by transferring the cost of poverty in old age to ones younger years. And therein lies the problem. You think all of society are noble, capable, honest minded people and these programs are in place to help them when times get rough. I don't think you understand the difference between thoery and practical application. Typical problem with liberal minded folks.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I didn't get that impression at all from her post. The impression I got is downtown - as a busy entertainment district with Thursday nights being a busy night - was not properly cleaned up after. Something I can understand and relate to given how poor Cleveland City Services are. The night club flyers are certainly not left by suburbanite kids. Litter can come from all types of people, but typically you can tell from the litter itself who left it. I agree it's a vicious cycle where if more educate professionals lived downtown it would be better. But at the same time, as more educated professionals move downtown (and by all accounts they have) when is the city going to step up and do their part to ensure they stay there? I haven't really seen any improvement from the city government and with my son approaching 6 months, I'm not going to wait around hoping it happens.

This is the best thing I've read on this board in awhile. The ongoing effort to prevent the unpreventable is where I really just don't understand the point of some of these social programs. The poor will always be among us.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
FYI - howl at the moon and rock bottom were doing well. They were asked to leave; they did not close. They wanted to expand windows and needed the space.

Piano bar or nice calm hangout in downtown Cleveland/Ohio City/Treamont?
Map room, anything by gateway when it's not a game night - nicks, cleats, flannerys. Most everything in Ohio city is mellow...abc, beir market, old angle. Harbor Inn in the west flats migh be my favorite bar in Cleveland. Tremont I don't know is well but I think pretty much everywhere there is a far cry (in a better way) from what is on w 6th.

Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
Think this will end up being mostly a school field trip thing. I was surprised how many schools take Lolly the Trolley field trips; this will probably just reinforce that.

Celebrity Crushes!
This was something I learned about being in college at OU, when people would ask about school, and I would try to relate stories to them...it seems there's a lot of "lost in translation" going on. Certain things like being arrested and taken to Nelsonville only to be left standing alone in the police station parking lot for a moment and making a run for it (and the ensuing trip back to Athens in twist ties)...yeah, that goes over well with any crowd. Other things like getting to Quad Night at 6pm to ensure a bar stool and the calamity that ensues is hard to describe. Oddly I discovered this was true about Put-in-Bay stories telling it to OU people too. So like I get back from summer and trying to relate PIB stories had a similar affect. I just starting saying "summer was awesome" or "I'm so glad I went to OU' when asked questions about "how is school" or "how was summer".

Celebrity Crushes!
I sat next to Natalie Portman in a restaurant in NYC. She's small, but looks pretty much exactly like she does on screen (sometimes you see people in person and they can look better/worse). So yeah, still hot.

Best Movies Ever Made?
Sports movies...speaking of Kevin Costnar, I love Tin Cup. Great drinking movie... Major League I think I would rank #1 for me, although its ties to Cleveland probably bias my opinion.

Best Movies Ever Made?
Leaving Las Vegas, The Rock, and Con-Air were all successful in the box office. "Acting" is a bit overrated for me. The question I ask is "did I enjoy the movie"? Those were 3 Nicholas Cage movies I enjoyed that came out right ina row. Then he was in a few movies I didn't like, gone in 60 seconds I liked, and then that was about it. He's not winning any Oscars, but neither is Rambo but I still liked those movies. It's like Keanu Reeves - he was in some movies I really like, but everyone rips his "acting". Who cares...I enjoyed the movie.

What's everyone doing on NYE?
We're heading to my in-laws in Florida. NYE happens to also be my mother-in-law's birthday - she's turning 60 - so we'll be celebrating with her and my wife's family. We have a 3 month old so I'm not sure if we'll actually make it to midnight, but I'm willing to bet I'll be up sometime between 3-5 am!

Kelleys Island, Ohio
What a ridiculous idea. The good thing with small towns though is something like that will never be allowed to happen by the locals.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Although this belong is suburban crime. Agree and the schools that you think wouldn't be big "drug dens" are. Hathaway Brown, Shaker, US, Heights, Beachwood, Benedictine were some of the worst when I was in High School. You could get anything at Shaker or Heights, since a lot of kid parents are/were doctors. So I don't doubt drug use in certain circles in any of those - or any HS in general - is high. The question is, how does it compare to the drug use (in terms of volume and penetration rate) at the CMSD schools? Are you trying to tell me there is a bigger drug problem at Shaker than at Glenville? Or at Benedictine vs. South? You can answer if you want, but there's 0% chance whatever you tell me will make me think drugs aren't more rampant at CMSD schools than at a suburban school. I mean, where do you think all the suburban kids get their drugs from?

Does anybody Ski?
Well the wife is the one that got me into skiing, but you definitely hit the mother lode. Condo in Vail. We are going out to Beaver Creek/Vail in a month. So I need to get in shape, those runs will kill you. That is the biggest difference, out west you tire so much quicker. Probably a combination of Altitude and Distance. But mad do your legs feel like jello by the end of the day. Yes, have to get in shape. Prior to my last trip out west, I decided to not take any elevators for like 2 months. 8 floors anytime I went in or out of my condo building; 5 floors at work...on top of extra time in the gym on ellipticals and stairmasters. Lot of work (I did get used to taking the stairs) but it was worth it. My legs held up better than they had in a long time!

Oh lawd. You again! :P Honestly, I wouldn't mind learning how to X-Country ski as it looks like a good work out. Ohh come on, its always entertaining to see tall people ski. :D  ;D Oh please, plus, they dont have enough fabulous clothing to me to really be interested in skiing. MTS...I'm so disappointed! Who would have thought the king (or is it queen?) of shopping wouldn't know there are tons of "fabulous" clothing lines exclusively for skiing? Just show up in Aspen or Vail a day early and you can get fitted with some great stuff...

Does anybody Ski?
I hear ya. I had to stop playing all court sports. Tore my left ACL in 1997. Had microfracture surgery on my right knee in 2007. So yeah...sucks. The ACL - while painful - was something I recovered from and had no problems with after. But since I have no cartilage in my right knee...outside of whatever formed when they poked holes in my femur to "create" cartilage, my doctor told me to back off on court sports or jogging for fitness unless I wanted to end up back on the operating table down the road. Still, skiing doesn't give me too many problems. My knees typically don't hurt. My legs may be sore, but nothing that wouldn't be expected. You should give it a try!

Does anybody Ski?
^^ Nice purchase! I grew up skiing...joined ski club in 5th grade that went to Boston Mills/Brandywine once a week. Once my older brother got a car, I quit ski club and we just went on our own a couple nights a week - typically we got season passes for x-mas :) Would go to Holiday Valley/Peak N Peak a couple times a year in addition to going locally and finally convinced our parents to take us to Vermont one year (they don't ski). Once I got out of school I started going to Colorado annually...then I struck gold when I married a girl whose parents have a condo in Vail! So we try to go out there once a year now, plus an extended trip to Holiday Valley each year (was there for New Year's last year...great snow, lots of fun). I stopped going to Boston Mills towards the end of high school...it just got to be no fun since it's so small and crowded. I haven't been back since. But I have to say, it was a great place to learn how to ski...the sometimes icy, mostly man made snow really almost makes you become a better skier. Anway, I love to ski...thinking about it makes we want to plan a trip!

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Nope, Aurora is not urban at all. But for all the reasons given why to live in Tremont over Aurora, I am saying relative safety of Aurora will trump many of the reasons to live in Tremont for many people. The "well, those things happen in urban areas" is exactly why people don't live in urban areas - they don't want to deal with them, period. Yes, happens everywhere. But how many days in a row can you leave your car unlocked, on the street in front of your house, with your iPod sitting in the front seat before it gets stolen in Tremont vs. Medina? Your margin for error is less in the suburbs. Factor in young kids who may be wondering around neighborhoods on bikes or with friends and what is your margin of error, as a parent, for losing track of them for a couple minutes in Medina compared to Tremont?

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Not to go too far off topic, but I have different rules I follow depending on where I am. At home (the flats) I don't ever leave my car parked outside of the garage overnight, let alone unlocked or with anything sitting out. Parked in my parents driveway in Aurora, my car is generally unlocked with everything sitting out in plain view. If I go to the store in Aurora, I lock the car but don't put anything away (I leave the face plate for my satellite radio in, for example). Then the farthest end of the spectrum - my car on Put-in-Bay is presently unlocked with the keys in the car. But I just want to point out the "it happens in every urban area" is a really lame argument. Because there are places where it doesn't happen, where you can leave your keys in your vehicle even, and having that element of safety will make people sacrifice many of the benefits associated with living in an urban area. That seems to get lost on this forum, especially when I see the "it happens in ever urban area" justification.
