Just found this. Thanks, once again. Joe Bissett, he committed suicide back in the late 70's. I used to hang out at "Grub" when I was in college and early adulthood back in the 80's. Still doing a good business, then. Last time I was there, probably 3 or 4 years ago. The stone apartment building, on the corner of Riverside and Pioneer, my older stepsister lived there back in the 70's. It was a RAT HOLE back then. Cheap housing for Dayton's unemployed welfare class. It was purchased I think sometime in the late 80's by a developer who wanted to turn the project into upscale condos...attracting people who might like the canoe club. Obviously it didn't work. Thanks again. If you still do these things, get up further north, to Forrest Park area of now Harrison Tshp. Arthur Beerman's house is around Philadelphia and ?? Siebenthaller ?? Also the Golden Triangle, Otterbein Ave, Harvard Blvd, Benson Drive, Burroughs Drive, the old Methodist Seminary, that is a beautiful area of Dayton proper that has also declined.

My parents live there now (excuse me, Butler Township I must get that one right) and I also have a sister and a brother who live there now. Funny, my mom says I should just tell people I am from Vandalia, NOT Trotwood! Makes me angry, cause it WAS a great place! Oh well. For now I say "Go Elks" (and being from NORTH of Dayton I thought that would NEVER happen!)
  3. This information is great. The memories flood back. Thanks to everyone! When the Salem Mall first opened, it was one story and had a Liberal Grocery store as an anchor store before going through renovations in the late 70's/early 80's to the 2 story more modern (ha before being demolished). Miracle Lane Shopping Center, didn't that have Bettman's Pharmacy? The Golden-Triangle of Dayton was also a great place at one time. Up on Salem, there was the Goody-Goody..the Keyhole...Kon-Tiki Theater...a Frisches with car hops (also in Trotwood)...now long gone. El Greco's at the old A&P closed in December 2006, but I just found out yesterday it has been reopened with new owners who say it is all the same (I will have to make it a point to see for myself) (being from there I am still not afraid to park out front, although I cant get many people to agree to go with me!). I remember the She Lounge, The Ivy on Main and Siebenthaller, Sheerer's IceCream (is it still there???)...I know the Barnsider is still trying, thanks Mary! But most of that area...Salem Ave and Main Street from the River on North is nothing but TRASH now. Too bad. So much history!

Thanks for the pics of Olde Trotwood, the one real Trotwood-ites remember and love. I know people who lived in those houses, worked out of those businesses. It is now gone forever. Jeff, you ought to do a story/post on the demise of Trotwood - because it is a sad story that should be told. I grew up and graduated from high school there, back in the day (early 80's people!!!)...moved away (NC) and returned to Ohio (Vandalia and then Centerville) 15 years later. The Trotwood I knew is now long gone.....die hard Trotwood families moved to Brookville...those fleeing Trotwood but longed for the hometown atmosphere moved to Vandalia. The rest fled South (schools are good down here, kids make you pay attention to those things). Again, thanks for the info you placed out here. You brought back a lot of great memories!
