Beachwood: New Eaton Headquarters
Any chance that this is a negotiating tactic employed by Eaton? Let's leak a story to the PeeDee, in the hopes the city comes around to see the error of their ways...

Beachwood: New Eaton Headquarters
Unreal. I know from someone that works in the Clinic buildings, on the former site of MBNA, that the tax breaks afforded to the Clinic were extremely favorable. I imagine that a similar arrangement is being made with Eaton, that, no doubt, supersedes any tangible benefits of remaining downtown, at least in the minds of the decision-makers.

well at least it is a parking garage and not a huge open surface lot...

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
The price tag for this project was $65million. A decent chunk of change no doubt. If rent for the 236 apartments is going to be ballpark $1,000 per month, that is $236,000, or $2.8million a year, but has a ton of upkeep/maintenance, overhead involved. Plus, they assuredly won't all be occupied at first either... Now I hate parking lots as much as the next guy, but do you guys ever stop to do the math on this? 600 spots x $10 special event parking x 20 events per month or so? = $120k/month, nearly all of which is pure profit once the building is paid for, or almost $1.5million a year. Plus, there will likely be monthly office/business/parking agreements, that could generate just as much per month. This puts the total "parking" revenue close to what would be generated from rent. Now I know that not all 600 spaces will always be filled, and that there may not be that many "events" that need parking, but if I'm a developer, those figures are hard to ignore. And if I'm a bank, in this financial market, looking to hand out a huge loan, those figures would be even more hard to ignore. If I am National City/Key/etc, I would want something just short of a sure thing, which I believe parking represents in this market and economic climate.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I'd still like for the Hulett's to be incorporated somehow in that area's future. I believe there is one slumbering over there somewhere (along west bank)

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
There was a really good write up in Crains this week from the guy that runs the IX Center advocating the mall as the best site for the convention center. If I can figure out my electronic online subscription workings, I'll post it...

Beachwood: New Eaton Headquarters
I have the print edition and I'll try to summarize it as best I can. Basically, the article states how there are growing concerns over Eaton's plans to relocate to the East Bank of the Flats. The article was quick to say that this is more than just a rumor since it has been reported by a number of different people. The two areas of growing concern are as follows: Direct quotes, "The deal to move to the Flats is foundering because the city of Cleveland won't change the way it defines income for municipal income tax purposes." and "Eaton's move to the Flats is hung up because the Port Authority can't assure the company how the waterfront surrounding the potential Eaton site will be redeveloped." The article goes on to quote an unnamed source who states that, apparently, Eaton wants both the concrete silos and the waterfront line removed before agreeing to the move. Both are evidently perceived as eyesores. Most worrisome is that the article mentions that if plans fall through for the East bank, the two leading sites they will consider are Mentor and Highland Hills.

I agree...it is Cleveland's architecturally-equivalent "pink flamingo on the front lawn" tacky while it is better than having nothing there, having this on our city's doorstep in such a historically significant spot makes me cringe

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Right now I have a bet with my buddy from Michigan. I'm taking OSU and the points (10.5), and I feel pretty confident I'll have a $50 spot coming to me in the mail next week. If not, I won't be going out drinking for the next week or so! :drunk:

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Am I the only one that feels the Buckeyes still have a good chance of beating USC regardless of whether or not Wells plays? Yes, Wells is a great RB, but it it not like the cupboard is bare. They have backs that will be more than serviceable in Wells, Saine, Herron, etc., even Pryor can be expected to shoulder a little bit extra now. Plus the Buckeyes still IMO match up well with USC defensively. Again, it is the spread offenses that feature mobile QBs that always trouble OSU, not the conventional 5-7 step drop pocket QBs to which USC is employing. To me this game will be determined by field position, special teams, and our ability to stop the run.

Cleveland: Rockometer Proposal
Not to venture too far off-topic, but so long as they work this concept into a Campbell Administration-esque plan for the overall waterfront, I would fully be on board, pardon the pun.

Cleveland: Rockometer Proposal
The relocation of the coast guard station provides the opportunity for another public-waterfront "touching point" so to speak. Outside of Voinovich Park, the area behind GLSC/RockHall, there are very few of these areas. I hope that whatever does eventually takes root here remembers this key point.

Cleveland: Rockometer Proposal
From Cool Cleveland email blast this morning: Rockometer lands on Rock and Roll Boulevard Now that demolition of the old US Coast Guard station across from the Rock Hall on E. 9th Street has begun, we find ourselves at a crossroads. Will the Federal government give National Concession founder and redoubtable impresario Christopher Axelrod permission to build "the most elaborate" state-of-the-art, 2000-seat party center East of Las Vegas? We don't see why they wouldn't. As proposed, the Rockometer would sport 3 jumbo screens and a giant jukebox theme measuring the spirit level of Cleveland on the facade, while inside the flexible venue could host everything from Cleveland's every-third-year Rock Hall induction ceremonies and similar corporate celebrations to the Grammy Awards, featuring a hydraulic stage, a media center/broadcast facility, water and vapor effects, an underground tunnel to the Museum, and no doubt, lot of attitude. Check the video, and embrace the vision: http://www.TheRockometer.com What are everyone's thoughts? Personally, I like the concept, but the renderings leave a lot to be desired...

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
I'd like to start a new thread dedicated to Ohio-based companies that are experiencing a large amount of growth. To kick things off, here is a news story picked up by Ohio.com from Inc Magazine detailing the 5,000 fastest growing private companies. NE Ohio has 19 of these. 19 area companies are on fastest-growing list Energy, IT entrepreneurs top annual Inc. report By Paula Schleis Beacon Journal business writer Published on Wednesday, Aug 27, 2008 Nineteen area companies made Inc. magazine's list of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in the country. ''The list is the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy — America's independent-minded entrepreneurs,'' Inc. said in announcing the honorees... http://www.ohio.com/business/27517764.html NE Ohio list only A lot of these companies unfortunately reside out in the burbs, and as a forumer on UO, I'd selfishly like to see their growth someday reach the point where it might necessitate a relocation to a more urban setting, hastening a further downtown population upswing and an eventual greater possibility for new large-scale office building's.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
I'm concerned with OSU's continued inability to defend the spread offense...I really don't think it is from a lack of personnel, but the coaching philosophy...now that RichRod is bringing this type of offense to that State up North, it is even more of a concern.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I have to disagree...nothing tests the fortitude of a fan base more than losing...it is easy to be a fan of a team when they are winning on a consistent basis like the Squealers. The fact the Browns consistently sell out every game and rank near the top in merchandise revenue every year, despite fielding less than stellar teams, speaks volumes.
