Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Why would I think he is being brought over for defense? That would make absolutely no sense. Clearly, this is a move to help on the offensive end deliberately at the expense of the defensive end. He will be our worst wing defender by a long shot (no pun intended). My only observation was that when we get deep into the playoffs and the rotation is shortened to 7-8 guys, he may not be in it. It's a good problem to have.

Awesome pick up, but let's not be fooled into thinking this is Korver from two years ago. He's 35 and, even in his 20's, was an awful defender. If everyone is healthy, it is possible he is not even in the 7-8 man rotation should we return to the Finals. It may depend on who has the hot hand.

RJeff is a better player than Dahntay. Always has been. Him being past his prime doesn't mean he can't contribute. Dahntay provided very little for us last year. It came down to him or Liggins in camp. All things being equal, you keep the young guy with the upside and room for improvement. Liggins was once thought of as a good prospect. And the proof is in the pudding.... the Cavs have played well with him filling in for JR.

"but police say he is not a suspect" phew.... EDIT: nevermind. He's not out of the woods yet. Seems like the girlfriend will ID him. I wonder if video evidence will contradict her statement. Also, no indication of a fractured skull, so even if charges are brought, it is likely they could be pled down from a felonious assault.

I don't see anything in that statement which implies he wasn't there. Best case scenario is that it started as mutual combat, even if the other guy got the worst of it. Doesn't look or sound good.

It was definitely Dahntay. Fastest he ran all year. I liked him a lot, especially his toughness. But I'll take Liggins, who is much younger and not past his prime. Dahntay wasn't giving us anything Liggins can't.

^Eh. There were some issues with Clowney. Some people questioned his effort near the end of his college career and there was some legitimate debate about whether he would end up going #1.

Philly's pick is #12, not #10. Garrett is very highly regarded. But be careful about the "can't miss" label. If there ever was a "can't miss" prospect IMO, it was Courtney Brown.

I just think until we get good, the best bet is to take players who were big time recruits and then consistently performed at a high level in college. That seems to be what the Steelers and Ravens do year in and year out. Bad luck has plagued the Browns as much as poor decisions. They haven't "reached" on a whole lot of their picks over the years according to how those players were evaluated for the draft. You can minimize the chances of repeating past failures by taking safer picks and not swinging for the fences on players who "wow" scouts in the draft process with their measurables.

The man has triplets to feed! Are you suggesting he would be wrong for being "all over" selective enforcement of this policy? Do you think a place of public accommodation should legally be allowed to selectively enforce such a policy?

Cleveland Browns Discussion
^Certainly all true. And I purposefully limited it to the past 25 years because there were several good defensive players, including Bruce Smith, taken #1 overall prior to then. Maybe "bust" is a bit strong for Mario Williams, but he certainly has not lived up to the hype. He's a solid player, but no where near what he was advertised to be. My only point was that this assumption that the QBs are risky and the top rated DL are "locks" is flat out wrong. Taking a DL, no matter how high he's ranked, appears to be just as risky as taking a QB.

No need to shall-we-say "beat around the bush." By selectively, you mean will it be enforced against black youths but not white youths. I doubt it, but if it is, then the Mall deserves to get sued and good for the lawyers who are fighting to uphold those fundamental rights (even though there is not a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for those types of cases given the relative lack of economic damages). While this scenario riles up shall-we-say "certain types of internet forums", it is just not reflective of the real world. Remember all those civil rights lawyers who flocked like crows to a stumbling deer when the same restrictions on Coventry and Lee Rd were enforced? Yeah... neither do I. That's not to say that some random lawyer is not going to file a potentially meritless suit. Just don't expect a flock of civil rights lawyers to pile on. As for your pre-paid card idea, would the kids then be given an armband to wear around the mall to let it be known they have money to spend? Would each individual kid have to have a gift card or would one out of a group of 3 suffice? Would there be a minimum buy in?.... if the gift card was for $5, would that buy the kids a whole day of roaming around the mall? Would they be required to actually use the gift card or could they buy one and use it to enter the mall year round? What if there is a leftover balance on the card from the last visit?

All were defensive linemen drafted first overall. And all were busts. Mario Williams was not a bust. What do these players have in common? Jeff George Tim Couch David Carr Jamarcus Russell Sam Bradford Jared Goff (probably) All were QB's drafted 1st overall and all were busts. And I was being nice by not including Alex Smith and Carson Palmer. For sure, there are no locks. And I'm not necessarily advocating taking a QB or anyone else over the top two consensus prospects (Garrett and Allen). I was merely pointing out that EVERY defensive player selected first overall in the last 25 years, who all happened to be DL, were pretty much busts. You listed several QBs over that same time frame who were busts. But you didn't include Peyton Manning, Michael Vick, Eli Manning, Matthew Stafford, Cam Newton, and Andrew Luck. My point was that, while people often talk about over-inflated draft values for QBs, it appears the same (if not worse) over-valuing applies to DL. The league has this fascination with certain positions in the draft - QB, DL, OT, CB - probably in that order. It seems the risks of taking a QB are accepted, but anytime a DL is ranked that high he gets the "can't miss" tag.... which hasn't proven to be all that reliable.

1st round picks taken before qb's? Defensive players selected first overall in the last 25 years. All D-lineman in college too. Not that impressive of a list when you look at their NFL accomplishments. Just saying. The NFL has this affinity for 'positional value', which we all know applies to QBs. But maybe it also applies to DLs

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
I suspect there will come a time (not any time soon) when these suburbs, especially the southern ones around the industrial valley, are going to come begging Cleveland to take them in. I doubt Cleveland's reaction, no matter how well it might be doing at that time and how far these suburbs may have fallen, will be to thumb its nose at the prospect. ^I certainly don't think poverty and despair are an "excuse" for crime. They do not excuse the criminal, either legally or morally. I don't know anyone who would argue otherwise. Do you? Simply pointing out the time-tested, extremely strong correlation is by no means "excusing bad behavior" or however else those who will accept only one conclusion want to term it. It's the same issue we run into discussing terrorism. Someone asks about how we solve a problem but then angrily dismisses any discussion of root causes as "excuses". There is absolutely no "excuse" for murdering innocent civilians. No need to debate whether water is wet.

With the #1 pick secured, who ya got? There are three potential QBs for that pick - Watson (Clemson), Kizer (ND), and Trubisky (UNC). I'm not in love with any of them, but each should get a close look. I have them in that order at the moment based on Watson's extremely high ceiling. Kizer probably has the most NFL ready arm, great size, and played his college ball in a Midwest climate. Trubisky is a local kid (Mentor) who has a solid all around skill set, but lower ceiling than the other two IMO. The two defensive lineman for consideration are Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) and Jonathan Allen ('Bama). These are the consensus top two prospects. I fear that both will need a 4-3 scheme to thrive as pass rushers. Both would probably be forced to play out of position in our scheme. This is why I hate the 3-4. It limits your prospects. Anyone who plays in a 3-4 can play in a 4-3, but not vice-versa. Leonard Fournette (RB - LSU) also deserves a very close look. He is probably every bit the prospect Zeke was, although he reminds me more of Adrian Peterson. Then there is the wild card of Jabril Peppers (ATH/SS - Mich). If you want a can't miss prospect who will play at a high level in the NFL over the next decade, he's your guy. But his position doesn't carry much draft value and he lacks ideal size. Anyone else to consider?

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
I wouldn't call it ugly. It's undesirable and there's an overabundance of it, especially in this market. How many 3bdrm, 1 bath houses can the market for the eastern suburbs handle? It created a buyer's market, driving down prices, leading to rental conversions, leading to Section 8 designations, leading to neglect, etc. And Cleveland proper's decline can be at least partially attributed to crappy housing stock and poor urban planning which is going to take all of our lifetimes to correct (best case scenario). While East Cleveland does have some great stock in certain areas, especially the very well maintained Forest Hills neighborhood, the majority of it is still up-down duck-billed duplex styles. The shame is the way the apartment stock became undesirable several decades ago. Those were the real gems.
